Baffles and poles: the geometry that beats squirrels
A baffle is not a deterrent, it is a shape with no way past it. It only works when three distances are right at the same time.
The short answer
- The 5-7-9 rule: baffle top about 5 ft up, 7 ft or more of clear air horizontally, about 9 ft of clearance below anything overhead.
- A torpedo or stovepipe baffle on a pole beats every mechanical squirrel-proof feeder, and it has nothing that can wear out.
- Minimum sizes: 6 in diameter and 15 to 18 in long for a pole baffle, 15 to 18 in across for a dome, 18 to 24 in for a cone.
- Snow is the hidden variable. Two feet of pack turns a correctly set 5 ft baffle into a 3 ft baffle, and 3 ft is inside jumping range.
- Install in this order: survey launch points, set the pole, fit the baffle, hang the feeder, then measure again once everything is loaded.
A baffle does not frighten anything. It is a physical shape that a climbing animal cannot get around, and that is its entire advantage over every mechanism ever fitted to a feeder. Springs weaken, pivots seize, tolerances drift. A cylinder of smooth metal 5 ft up a pole works the same in year nine as in week one.
The catch is that a baffle is not really a product, it is a set of distances. The same baffle is completely effective or completely useless depending on three measurements around it.
Four shapes, and what each one stops#

The practical split is simple. On a pole, use a torpedo or a stovepipe. Above a hanging feeder, use a dome. A cone does both adequately and neither best. Nothing on that list is a substitute for the distances below.
The 5-7-9 rule#
Three numbers, all of which must hold at the same time.
5 ft: the vertical jump#
A gray squirrel starting from flat ground clears roughly 4 to 5 ft straight up. That is why the top edge of the baffle wants to be at about 4.5 to 5 ft, with the feeder immediately above it. Below that, the squirrel does not need to climb at all: it jumps directly onto the feeder and the baffle never enters the story.
Note what the number applies to. It is the top of the baffle, not the bottom, and not the feeder. A 15 in torpedo whose top sits at 5 ft has its bottom rim at 3.75 ft, which is exactly right. A baffle mounted so the bottom is at 5 ft is over-high and leaves nothing to protect.
7 ft: the horizontal leap#
A squirrel can cross 7 to 10 ft of open air from a standing launch on a fence rail or a branch, and further downhill. Seven feet is the workable minimum in a tidy yard. Ten feet is what you want if you have watched the local squirrels operate and been impressed.
Count everything as a launch point, not just the obvious ones: fence tops, deck rails, sheds, tree trunks, walls, woodpiles, garden furniture, a stacked pile of shovelled snow, a trash bin that only lives there in summer. The full survey is in where to put a bird feeder.
9 ft: the drop from above#
Falling is easier than jumping. A squirrel dropping from a branch, an eave or a pergola beam can cover far more distance than it can leap horizontally, and it can steer on the way down. About 9 ft of vertical clearance below any overhead structure is the working figure, and 10 to 12 ft is safer under a big spreading tree.
This is the number people find last, usually in autumn when the leaves drop and the branch they never registered appears. If you cannot clear it, prune it or move the pole.
Diameter: the number people get wrong#
Height is the number people remember. Diameter is the number that quietly fails.
A climbing animal defeats a narrow baffle by reaching around it. A gray squirrel gripping a pole with its hind feet can extend most of its body length upward, so a baffle must be wider than that reach, or long enough that reaching around gains nothing.
- Pole baffles: 6 in diameter minimum, and 15 to 18 in long. Length substitutes for diameter here: a squirrel hugging a smooth 6 in cylinder cannot pull itself up 18 in of it.
- Domes: 15 to 18 in diameter minimum. Under 15 in a squirrel dropping on top can simply swing past the rim.
- Cones: 18 to 24 in across. A cone works by width alone, so it needs the most.
- Raccoons: add length rather than width. An 18 in or longer stovepipe on a smooth pole is the reliable configuration, because raccoon reach beats almost any practical diameter. See raccoons.
A baffle that tilts or spins slightly beats one bolted rigid: a squirrel that gets a grip on a tilting stovepipe ends up on the ground rather than on a stable platform.
Mounting height, and the snow variable#
Set the baffle top at 4.5 to 5 ft above the surface a squirrel will actually stand on. In most of the year that is the ground. In winter it is not.
Worked example. A pole set correctly in October with the baffle top at 5 ft. Two feet of settled snowpack arrives in January. The effective baffle height is now 3 ft, which is well inside a standing jump, and the station that worked for three months fails in a week. The owner blames the baffle.
Three ways to handle it:
- Shovel a ring. Keep a 3 to 4 ft radius around the pole clear of snow. Least effort, most reliable, and it also keeps the ground-feeding birds working.
- Set the baffle high from the start. In heavy snow country, mount the top at 5 ft plus your typical settled pack, and pick a feeder you can still fill at that height.
- Use an adjustable baffle collar. A baffle held on a set screw or a stop pin can be moved up 12 in in December and back down in March, which is the best of both.
Never pile shovelled snow within 10 ft of the pole. That is a launch point you built yourself, and it is the most common winter failure in stopping squirrels.
Pole diameter, wobble and sway#
The pole is doing structural work and most people underbuy it.
Diameter and material. A 1 in steel pole is the sensible default. Half-inch shepherd's hooks flex under a loaded feeder, and flex is not cosmetic: a squirrel bouncing a flexing pole shakes seed onto the ground, which means it gets fed anyway and keeps coming back. Wind sway does the same thing and adds cracked plastic where the feeder swings into a wall.
Depth. Set it 18 to 24 in into the ground. Anything shallower leans within a season, and a leaning pole shortens the distance to your nearest launch point without you noticing. In soft ground use a ground socket you can still lift the pole out of.
Smoothness below the feeder. Every joint, bolt head, bracket and hose clamp under the feeder is a foothold, which is why bolt-together sectional poles fail. Keep that section unbroken.
Sway test. Push the loaded pole sideways with one hand. More than about an inch of movement means it is too light or too shallow. Hardware options: poles, hooks and hangers.
Dome baffles above hanging feeders#
If your feeder hangs from a branch, a wire or a bracket, the threat comes from above and the answer is a dome.
- Dome diameter 15 to 18 in or more.
- The feeder body hanging at least 12 to 18 in below the dome rim, so an animal on top of the dome cannot reach past it.
- The hanging point at least 7 to 10 ft from any launch, and well out from the trunk if it is on a branch.
- A long, thin hanging wire rather than a chain, because a chain gives grip.
Even done properly, a hanging setup is second best: branches move, wires get chewed, and raccoons reach many hanging positions anyway. If you have ground for a pole, use the pole.
Which feeders still need help#
A baffled pole makes the squirrel resistance of the feeder above it largely irrelevant, which changes what is worth buying:

The squirrel column scores each design standing alone, which is why it looks bleak. On correct geometry that column stops driving the decision and you can choose on capacity, weather resistance and mess instead. Installation, in order#
- Survey first. Walk the spot and measure the three distances before anything goes in the ground. Include seasonal objects and future growth.
- Set the pole. Drive it 18 to 24 in in, plumb. Check it does not move more than an inch under a firm push.
- Fit the baffle before the feeder. Most pole baffles have to be threaded on from the top, and discovering that with a full feeder in place is a bad afternoon.
- Set the baffle top at 4.5 to 5 ft, measured from the ground the squirrel will stand on, snow included.
- Hang the feeder just above the baffle, ports at 5 to 6 ft so you can service it without a ladder.
- Check for footholds. Run a hand down the pole under the feeder. Anything that catches gets removed.
- Re-measure loaded. A full feeder makes the pole lean slightly and shortens your clearances. Measure again with everything hanging.
- Watch for a week. Squirrels test a new setup within days, and where they launch from tells you exactly which distance you got wrong.
When the geometry is impossible#
Some yards cannot deliver 7 ft of clearance in any direction: balconies, courtyards, decks ringed by rails. Stop trying to win with placement and switch strategy to a caged or weight-activated squirrel-proof design, or to safflower, which most squirrels ignore while cardinals and house finches take it happily. Just be clear about the trade. You are moving from a solution with no moving parts to one that depends on a mechanism in the weather, and mechanisms need the maintenance covered in feeder repair and maintenance.

How high should a squirrel baffle be on a pole?
The top edge of the baffle should sit about 4.5 to 5 ft above the ground, which puts the feeder just above it at 5 to 6 ft. Five feet is the working figure because a gray squirrel launching from flat ground clears roughly 4 to 5 ft vertically. Do dome baffles work above hanging feeders?
Yes, if the dome is wide enough and the feeder hangs low enough beneath it. Fit a dome of 15 to 18 in or more, hang it so the feeder body sits at least 12 to 18 in below the dome's rim, and make sure the hanging point is at least 7 to 10 ft from anything the squirrel can jump from and well out from the trunk. A dome hung tight against the feeder top gives a squirrel something to reach past, which defeats it.
Does a baffle stop raccoons too?
Usually, but the margin is thinner. Raccoons are heavier, stronger and have long reach and real hands, so a short baffle they can hug and haul past is not enough. Use a long stovepipe or torpedo baffle of at least 18 in on a smooth pole with no joints, screws or brackets below the feeder to grip. Raccoons work at night, so if the feeder empties overnight and no squirrel is ever seen on it, that is the diagnosis.
What kind of pole should I use?
A 1 in diameter steel pole driven 18 to 24 in into the ground, smooth and unjointed for the entire section below the feeder. Thin shepherd's hooks fail three ways: they flex so a squirrel can bounce seed out, they let wind swing the feeder, and they bend permanently under a loaded multi-arm setup. Bolt-together sectional poles give a climbing animal a ledge to grip, which is the one thing a baffled pole must not have.
