Raccoons at Bird Feeders: The Overnight Raiders
A raccoon has hands, 15 lb of leverage and all night. The hardware that stops squirrels is not built for any of that.
The short answer
- Feeder emptied overnight with the lid off, tipped or unhooked, plus five-toed handprints, is a raccoon. Squirrels do not open lids and do not work at night.
- Bringing feeders in at dusk and putting them back at dawn is the only fix that works every night. Everything else buys you time.
- A raccoon-rated pole baffle is a cylinder at least 8 in across and 24 to 36 in long, set so its top edge clears 6.5 ft and its bottom edge still sits about 4.5 ft above the ground.
- Weight-activated and caged feeders are designed against a 500 g squirrel, not a 7 kg raccoon that can hang, pull and pry. Most give way in one or two nights.
- The feeder is rarely the original attractant. Secured garbage, a closed compost bin and no pet food outdoors matter more than any baffle.
The feeder was full at 9pm. At 7am it is lying in the grass 6 ft from the pole, the lid is off and sitting separately, and there is a smeared handprint on the pole about chest height. Nothing is chewed. That is a raccoon, and the diagnosis matters, because the hardware sold to stop squirrels was designed against an animal one fifteenth its weight.
The morning evidence#
| Sign | Raccoon | Squirrel | Deer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time it happened | Between dusk and dawn | Daylight | Dawn and dusk |
| Feeder position | On the ground, unhooked or tipped | Still hanging | Still hanging, pole leaning |
| Lid | Removed and dropped nearby | In place | In place |
| Damage | Pried, bent, sprung latch | Chewed ports, gnawed plastic | None, seed licked out from below |
| Prints | Five long toes, hand-like, often greasy | Small four-toed front, five-toed hind | Cleft hoof |
| Pole | Smeared, sometimes muddy up to 5 ft | Scratches | Bent or leaning |
The greasy smear is the most reliable single tell. Raccoons have soft, sensitive forepaws that leave an oily print on a painted pole, and the print is nearly always higher than most people expect, because the animal stands up against the pole before it climbs.
Why raccoons walk through squirrel gear#
Squirrel-resistant designs assume a light animal that cannot open things.
- Weight-activated feeders close their ports under a squirrel's 400 to 600 g. A raccoon weighs 10 to 20 lb and simply shuts the mechanism permanently, then hangs off it, works a paw into the seam and pulls until something gives.
- Wire cages with 1.5 in mesh keep a raccoon's body out but not its hands. It reaches through, drags seed out, and if the cage is light gauge it bends the wires apart.
- Cone and dome baffles sized for squirrels are 15 to 24 in across. A raccoon standing on the pole beneath can reach roughly 2 ft above its hind feet, hook the rim and lever itself over.
- Latches and clips are a puzzle a raccoon solves with fingers. Anything a person can open one-handed, a raccoon can open with time.
The one squirrel measure that does transfer is the geometry. A pole in genuine open space still matters, because a raccoon that can step across from a fence rail never has to climb at all. The clearance rules from the baffles and poles guide apply unchanged.
The dusk rule#
Take the feeders in before dark, put them out at first light.
This is the only measure that works every single night, and it works because it removes the food from the window when the animal hunts. Birds do not feed after dark, so you lose nothing at all. Two details make it stick:
- Store it sealed. A feeder left on the porch or in an open carport is still a food source. A lidded bin, a garage or a shed.
- Deal with the ground. Spilled seed under the feeder holds the animal in the yard after the feeder is gone, and it feeds rats at the same time. Rake or sweep the drop zone weekly, or use a seed tray to catch the fallout. The full argument is in seed waste and mess.
If bringing feeders in nightly is not practical, the fallback is a pulley or a hoist line that lowers the feeder to a locked box, but in practice most people who try that go back to carrying it inside.
If it has to stay out: the baffle spec#
A raccoon-rated setup is bigger than a squirrel one in every dimension.
| Element | Squirrel spec | Raccoon spec |
|---|---|---|
| Baffle type | Cylinder or cone | Cylinder only, tilting if possible |
| Diameter | 6 in minimum | 8 in minimum |
| Length | 15 to 18 in | 24 to 36 in |
| Top edge height | 4.5 to 5 ft | Above 6.5 ft, plus local snow depth |
| Pole below the baffle | No couplings | No couplings, no bolts, no ground collar |
The squirrel column is the standard geometry from baffles and poles. The raccoon column is longer for one reason: a raccoon has hands and a working figure of about 2 ft of reach above whatever its hind feet are gripping. Keeping the bottom edge at about 4.5 ft puts the baffle above a standing reach, and a 24 to 36 in cylinder then carries the top edge past the reach of an animal that has climbed onto the bottom rim. That is why length, not width, is the number that matters here. Run your own numbers through the baffle calculator and add the raccoon margin on top.
Poles: what they can and cannot climb#
Raccoons climb by gripping, not by clinging like a squirrel, so pole diameter matters in the opposite direction to what people assume.
- Wooden 4x4 posts: trivial. Bark-like texture, perfect grip. Never mount a feeder on one.
- Metal pole over about 2 in diameter: easy, because there is enough girth to hug.
- Smooth metal pole 1 in or less: genuinely hard. Not impossible, but it is the best pole you can choose. Details on pole types are in poles, hooks and hangers.
- Any pole with a coupling, bolt head or bracket below the feeder: solved. That is a step.
What they actually came for#
A raccoon works a nightly route of dependable calories. Bird seed is on it, but rarely at the top. In most yards the real anchors are these, in order:
- Garbage cans without locking lids.
- Open compost, especially anything with cooked food, fat or fruit in it.
- Pet food or a water bowl left out.
- A grill with drip tray residue.
- Fallen fruit under a tree.
- The bird feeder.
Fix one through five and the feeder is a marginal stop rather than the main course. This is also why the highest-value bird foods draw the most attention: fat and protein are worth the detour.
| Food | Edible fraction | kcal / 100 g edible | Fat | Price / lb | Cost / lb eaten | kcal per dollar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cracked corn | 100% | 365 | 4% | $0.75 | $0.75 | 2,208 |
| Peanuts (in shell) | 73% | 567 | 49% | $2.40 | $3.29 | 782 |
| Suet | 100% | 740 | 75% | $2.20 | $2.20 | 1,526 |
Prices are 2026 United States big-bag benchmarks used as defaults in our seed cost calculator. Swap in your own and the ranking can change; the edible fraction and energy columns will not.
Suet in particular is a raccoon magnet, and a suet cage is easy to pull down. If you have raccoon pressure, take suet in at dusk without exception, and consider dropping cracked corn and open platform feeding entirely until the visits stop. On suet, a locking cage helps but a raccoon has all night.
Health and distance#
Raccoons are a primary rabies reservoir across the eastern United States, and their droppings can carry a roundworm whose eggs remain infective in soil for a long time and which is a real hazard to children. None of this makes a raccoon in the yard an emergency, but it does set rules.
- Do not handle, feed, corner or attempt to trap one yourself.
- Keep dogs and cats in at night where raccoons are active, and keep pet rabies vaccinations current.
- If a raccoon is active in daylight and appears disoriented, aggressive or unafraid, call local animal control or your state or provincial wildlife agency.
- Raccoons use repeated latrine sites, often on a deck, a flat roof or the base of a tree. Clear them with gloves and a mask, bag the material, and do not sweep dry.
- If you are bitten or scratched, wash immediately and contact a doctor the same day.
A one-week reset#
If you have an established raider, do all of this at once for seven consecutive nights:
- Feeders in at dusk, out at dawn, every night without exception.
- Rake the ground under the feeder clear on day one.
- Lock or weight garbage lids, close the compost, remove pet bowls.
- Fit a 24 to 36 in cylinder baffle if the pole is staying.
- No suet, no corn, no open trays for the week.
Raccoons abandon a route that stops paying, usually within a week or two. Partial measures fail because a single reward every few nights is enough to keep the visit on the schedule. If the animal is much larger than a raccoon and the pole itself is flattened, you are dealing with bears, and the rules change completely.
Frequently asked questions#
How do I know it was a raccoon and not a squirrel?
Three tells. Time: raccoons feed between dusk and dawn, squirrels in daylight. Damage pattern: raccoons remove lids, unhook feeders from poles and tip hoppers, while squirrels chew ports and gnaw plastic. Prints: a raccoon leaves a five-toed handprint that looks almost human, often greasy and smeared on the pole or the deck rail. If the feeder is on the ground with the lid off and no chew marks, it was not a squirrel.
Will a squirrel baffle stop a raccoon?
Usually not. A standard cone or a 15 to 18 in cylinder sized for a 500 g squirrel is short enough for a raccoon to reach past, and light enough that it will bend or lever off. Raccoon-rated means a cylinder at least 8 in across and 24 to 36 in long, mounted so its top edge is above 6.5 ft and its bottom edge still sits about 4.5 ft up, on a pole with no couplings to grip. Even then, a determined animal that has already found food there will keep testing it.
What time should I bring my bird feeders in?
Before full dark, and back out at first light. Birds do not feed at night, so you lose nothing. In practice that means the feeder comes off the hook when you close the blinds and goes back when you make coffee. Store it in a sealed bin or a garage, not on the porch, and sweep or rake spilled seed under the feeder at the same time, because the ground scatter is what holds a raccoon in the yard once the feeder is gone.
Are raccoons at my feeder dangerous?
Do not handle one, do not corner one and do not let pets confront one. Raccoons are a primary rabies reservoir in the eastern United States, and their droppings can carry a roundworm that is dangerous to people, particularly children. A raccoon out in daylight that is disoriented, staggering or unafraid should be reported to your local animal control or state wildlife agency rather than approached. Clean up any latrine site on a deck or shed roof with gloves and a mask.
Why do raccoons keep coming back after I fixed the feeder?
Because the feeder was probably not what brought them. A raccoon works a route of reliable food: unsecured garbage cans, an open compost heap, pet food or a water bowl on the porch, fallen fruit, a dirty grill. Fix those and the feeder stops being worth a detour. Fix only the feeder and the animal is still in your yard every night with time to spare.
