Where to put a bird feeder: the distances that actually matter

Six measurements decide whether a feeder gets used, raided, or turned into a window hazard. None of them cost anything to get right.

The short answer

  • Escape cover at 10 to 12 ft: close enough to bolt to, far enough that a cat cannot ambush from it.
  • Glass under 3 ft or over 30 ft. Anywhere in between gives a startled bird room to reach full flight speed before it reaches the window.
  • Hang the feeder head at 5 to 6 ft. That height is chosen for servicing and snow, not for the birds.
  • Leave 7 to 10 ft of clear air horizontally and about 9 ft below any overhanging branch. Squirrel placement is arithmetic, not luck.
  • Move a feeder in stages of about 4 to 6 ft a day, or run both positions in parallel for ten days if the move is longer than 30 ft.

Stand at the window you will actually watch from. Everything below is measured from a spot you can see, because a perfectly sited feeder you never look at is a chore, and chores get abandoned in February.

Then take six measurements. They conflict with each other on purpose, and the compromise between them is what placement actually is.

Cover at 10 to 12 ft#

Small birds will not feed for long in open ground. They feed in short trips: grab a seed, carry it to a twig, work on it, come back. Without a perch within reasonable reach, a feeder in the middle of a lawn gets sampled and abandoned, and the shyer species such as juncos, sparrows and towhees never commit to it at all.

So the instinct is to put the feeder in a shrub. That is the mistake, because the same cover that serves the birds serves the animal hunting them.

A cat ambush needs a short final rush from concealment. Dense low cover within about 5 ft of the feeder gives it that. At 10 to 12 ft the cat has to cross open ground, the birds see it, and the attempt fails. Meanwhile 10 to 12 ft is still a one-second flight for a chickadee escaping a hawk, which is the other thing cover is for.

The kind of cover matters as much as the distance. A bare deciduous branch in January is an escape perch. A dense yew is a hiding place for something else. If you are planting for this, native plants and cover covers what to put at that distance, and cats and feeders covers the rest of the cat problem, which placement alone does not solve.

The 3 ft and 30 ft window rule#

Window collisions are a leading human-related cause of bird mortality in North America, and feeder placement is one of the few levers a homeowner controls directly.

The rule is that a feeder should be less than 3 ft from glass, or more than 30 ft from it, because feeder distance sets impact speed rather than just collision frequency. Anything in between gives a startled bird enough runway to arrive at full flight speed. The mechanism, the band-by-band breakdown and the glass treatments that go with it are in window strikes.

Distance is not a substitute for treating the glass itself: if you have a large reflective window, mark the outside face of it. A window feeder sidesteps the problem entirely and is the right answer on an apartment balcony or where yard space is short.

Height: a servicing number, not a bird number#

Birds have opinions about height, but they are weak ones. Chickadees will use a feeder at 3 ft or at 12 ft. The species that genuinely care about height are the ground feeders, and they will feed under whatever you hang regardless.

So choose the height that suits the person doing the work. Five to six feet to the feeding ports means:

  • You can open the lid without a ladder, in a coat, holding a bucket.
  • The feeder sits above typical snowpack in most of the lower 48.
  • A cat cannot reach the ports standing on its hind legs.
  • On a baffled pole, the geometry works: the baffle top wants to be at about 5 ft, and the feeder sits just above it.

Feeders hung at 8 ft or more get filled less often and cleaned much less often. A feeder that is annoying to service stops being serviced, usually within the first season, which makes height a hygiene decision as much as anything: see how to clean a bird feeder.

Sun, shade and wind#

Aim for morning sun and afternoon shade, with the feeder's back to the prevailing winter wind.

Morning sun matters because the coldest, hungriest hour of a bird's day is just after dawn, and a sunlit feeder is warmer and dries overnight dew off the perches. Afternoon shade matters because heat is what destroys food: plain suet melts and goes rancid above roughly 70 °F, nectar ferments in hours in full sun, and seed in a sun-baked plastic tube sweats and cakes.

Our working rule: a feeder in full afternoon summer sun needs cleaning about twice as often as the same feeder in shade. If you cannot get shade, that is not a reason to move the feeder, it is a reason to halve the interval, use no-melt suet in summer, and check nectar daily.

Wind is the quieter variable. A feeder swinging in a 20 mph gust spills seed, and small birds give up on a moving perch. A wall, a hedge or a solid fence 15 to 20 ft upwind takes the edge off without becoming a squirrel launch pad. Cold-side shelter also matters to the birds themselves in winter, which is part of winter bird feeding.

The launch-point survey#

Do this before you dig the hole. Stand where the pole will go and look for anything a squirrel can jump from within these distances:

  • 7 to 10 ft horizontally. Fences, deck rails, sheds, tree trunks, garden walls, a stacked woodpile, a parked trailer.
  • About 9 ft above. Overhanging branches, eaves, a pergola crossbeam, a washing line.
  • Anything at all within 5 ft. Including things that are not there yet: a shrub that grows, a snow pile from a shovelled path, a chair left out in summer.

That last one causes more failures than the first two combined. A station that worked all winter breaks in June because a patio umbrella now sits 6 ft from the pole. Visibility from inside#

Placement advice usually ignores this and should not. Two practical points:

Put the feeder where the light is behind you, not behind the bird. A feeder on the south side photographed from indoors at midday is a silhouette. The same feeder viewed from the north side is lit.

And keep it in view of the seat you use most, not the seat you imagine using. The kitchen sink window beats the formal dining room in almost every house, because you stand at the sink every day and the birds are most active during the two hours after dawn.

What happens underneath#

Whatever hangs above, something collects below, and it is more than people expect.

A busy tube going through our working figure of 80 lb of black oil sunflower a year drops about 20 lb of hulls, because black oil is 75% kernel by weight and the other quarter is shell. That is a sack of wet organic litter on one patch of ground every year. It kills grass, holds water, grows mold, and attracts rats and mice.

Three ways to handle it, in order of effort:

  1. Site it over gravel, mulch or a planted bed. Litter disappears into the surface, and you rake it out at each clean.
  2. Fit a tray under the feeder. Catches most of the drop and doubles as a standing surface for cardinals.
  3. Switch to sunflower hearts. Nothing is dropped at all. Per pound actually eaten they run about 80 cents above black oil in the shell, so this is the fix you buy when the drop zone is decking, a path or a lawn you are not willing to lose, not a way to save money. The one thing not to do is treat the ground zone as pure waste, because it is a feeder in its own right. Millet and dropped seed on the ground is what brings juncos, sparrows and doves in:

Moving a feeder without losing the birds#

Birds navigate to a remembered position. Move a feeder 30 ft in one go and the regulars will arrive at the old spot, find nothing, and take days to relocate it. In a slow yard they may simply drop the stop from their route.

Move it in stages instead:

  • Up to 6 ft: move it in one go. Birds pick it up the same day.
  • 6 to 30 ft: move it 4 to 6 ft a day, every day, until it is where you want it. Keep it visible from the previous position at every step.
  • Over 30 ft, or around a corner: hang a second feeder at the destination and run both for about ten days, then remove the original. This is the only reliable method when the new position cannot be seen from the old one.

Do the moving in a settled week rather than during a cold snap or a storm, when birds are least able to spend energy searching. And do not move the feeder because it has been quiet for five days. How far should a bird feeder be from a window?

Either less than 3 ft or more than 30 ft. Within 3 ft a departing bird cannot accelerate enough for a collision to be fatal, so most strikes are survivable. Beyond 30 ft the glass reads as part of the wider scene and the bird has room to turn. The dangerous zone is roughly 6 to 15 ft, where a bird flushed by a hawk hits the window at full speed. If your feeder sits in that band, moving it closer to the house is the correct fix and it costs nothing.

How high should a bird feeder be off the ground?

About 5 to 6 ft to the feeding ports. Birds are not fussy about height, so choose the number that suits you: 5 to 6 ft lets you open the lid without a ladder while carrying a seed bucket, keeps the feeder above typical snowpack, and puts the feeder above the reach of a cat standing on its hind legs. On a baffled pole this height is set by the baffle anyway, since the baffle top needs to sit about 5 ft up.

Should a bird feeder be in sun or shade?

Morning sun, afternoon shade, and shelter from the prevailing wind. Early sun gets birds feeding at the coldest part of the day and dries dew off the feeder. Can I hang a feeder from a tree branch?

You can, but it is the weakest position available. A branch is a squirrel highway, it usually breaks the 9 ft overhead clearance rule, and a hanging feeder swings in wind so seed spills and small birds give up on it. If a tree is your only option, hang from a long wire with a dome baffle above the feeder, well out from the trunk, and accept that raccoons will still reach it.
