Squirrels, Pests and Problems at Bird Feeders

The short answer
- Diagnose before you buy. Most feeder problems are solved by geometry, timing or a change of seed, not by new hardware.
- A feeder emptied overnight with the lid off is a raccoon or a bear, never a squirrel. Squirrels work in daylight and leave the lid on.
- Neat half hulls scattered under the feeder mean birds are eating. Shredded shell fragments in one tidy pile mean a squirrel or a chipmunk.
- A yard that goes from busy to silent within a day is usually a hawk, and it refills within a week. A yard that empties slowly over two weeks, with sick-looking birds, is a disease problem and the feeders come down.
- Seed that sits untouched for a week is far more often stale, damp or the wrong seed than it is a predator problem.
Something is wrong at your feeder. Before you buy anything, read the yard. Almost every feeder problem leaves physical evidence, and that evidence narrows the cause down to one or two possibilities in the first minute of looking.
The mistake most people make is starting from the answer they expect. Seed vanished, therefore squirrels. In practice the seed vanished at 2am, squirrels were asleep, and the thing that took it weighs 15 lb and has hands.

Day shift and night shift#
Splitting problems by clock time removes half the suspects immediately.
Daylight raiders are squirrels, chipmunks, jays, grackles, starlings, house sparrows, deer at dawn and dusk, and the occasional bear. Night raiders are raccoons, opossums, rats and mice, flying squirrels in much of the East, and bears again. Nothing else of consequence visits a North American feeder in the dark.
So: fill the feeder to a marked level at dusk, and check it at first light. If it is empty in the morning and nothing was touched during the day, you have a night animal and no amount of squirrel hardware will help. If the level held overnight and fell between 7am and 10am, you have a daylight problem and the fix is pole geometry, a cage, or a change of seed.
When the feeder is the symptom, not the problem#
Three of the most common complaints are not about wildlife at all.
Stale seed. Sunflower goes rancid, especially in a warm garage or a bag that has been open since last winter. Birds will simply stop using a feeder rather than eat it. A good kernel snaps when you bite it and smells faintly nutty. A bad one bends, tastes bitter, or smells like old paint. Buy in quantities you will use within about six weeks and keep it cool and dry, which is the whole point of storing birdseed properly.
The wrong seed. Cheap mixes are mostly milo, wheat and cracked corn. Most feeder birds will not eat those, so they throw them out to reach the sunflower underneath, and you get a mound of rejected grain that sprouts and rots. That single choice generates complaints about waste, mess, rats, sprouting weeds and blackbird flocks all at once. Read what is actually in a birdseed mix before blaming an animal.
Placement. A feeder in the open with no cover within 10 to 12 ft feels dangerous to small birds, and they use it less. A feeder between 3 and 30 ft from a window is the deadliest possible distance for collisions: closer than 3 ft or further than 30 ft is what you want. The four fixes that solve most cases#
Ranked by how often they actually end the problem, not by how satisfying they feel.
- Correct pole geometry. A baffle at the right height on a pole with genuine clearance around it defeats squirrels outright and slows raccoons badly. This is measurement, not shopping. The baffle calculator will tell you whether your current position can ever work.
- Bring it in at dusk. Fifteen seconds a day. It removes raccoons, opossums, rats, flying squirrels and most bear risk in one move, and it costs nothing.
- Change the food. Safflower removes grackles and most squirrels while keeping cardinals. Nyjer removes almost everything except finches. Dropping cracked corn and millet from a hanging feeder removes house sparrows and doves from it. See safflower for the trade-offs.
- Exclude by size. A wire cage with roughly 1.5 in mesh passes chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and finches while stopping squirrels, grackles and starlings. It is the only deterrent with no moving parts.
When you have three problems at once#
Most struggling feeding stations have several things wrong, and people usually attack them in the wrong order and conclude that nothing works. Sequence matters, because each step removes suspects from the next one.
- Week 1: hygiene and food. Empty and wash every feeder, throw out old seed, and refill with a single fresh seed rather than a mix. Rake the ground clear. A surprising share of problems end here, and the ones that do not are now much easier to read.
- Week 2: the night shift. Bring feeders in at dusk for seven consecutive nights. If the overnight losses stop, you have your answer and you never needed hardware.
- Week 3: geometry. Move the pole into open ground, fit a correctly sized baffle at the right height, and clear the launch points around it. Only now is it worth measuring anything.
- Week 4: exclusion. Whatever is still getting through is a specific species with a specific size, and now a cage, a mesh size or a change of seed is aimed at a known target rather than a guess.

Problems that are really about hygiene#
Wet seed, a moldy tray and a crust of droppings on a perch are not cosmetic issues. They are how avian pox, salmonellosis and trichomonosis spread between birds that would never otherwise touch each other. What is emptying my bird feeder at night?
In most of North America it is a raccoon, a deer or, in bear country, a bear. Look at the feeder itself. Raccoons open lids, unhook feeders and leave greasy five-toed handprints on the pole. Deer drain a hopper from below without taking it down and often bend a light pole. Bears flatten poles, bite through plastic and carry feeders off. Rats and mice also feed at night but lower the seed level gradually and leave droppings rather than damage.
Why did all the birds disappear from my feeder overnight?
A sudden drop from busy to empty within a day is almost always a predator: a Cooper's or sharp-shinned hawk hunting your feeder, or a cat working the cover nearby. Birds return in two to seven days once the hunting pressure moves on. A slow decline over one to three weeks with birds that look fluffed, slow or reluctant to fly is different and more serious: stop feeding, clean everything and check your state agency's disease notices.
Do I have to take my feeders down when there is a problem?
For three situations, yes. A bear in the neighborhood means feeders come down immediately and stay down through the active season. A local salmonellosis or avian influenza notice from your wildlife agency means feeders come down until the advisory lifts. A rat colony under the feeder means feeders come down for two to three weeks so the food source disappears. For squirrels, starlings and grackles you can nearly always fix the setup instead.
Is there one change that solves the most problems at once?
Moving to a properly baffled pole in open ground. It removes squirrels, deters raccoons, keeps seed off the soil where rats feed, and puts the feeder somewhere you can actually clean and watch it. The second-best single change is switching from a cheap mix to a single seed, which ends most complaints about waste, sorting, sprouting and blackbird flocks at the same time.
