Sunflower hearts vs seed in the shell: the arithmetic
The gap on the shelf is 93%. The gap that matters is 44%, and it is still a real premium you are paying for a clean surface underneath.
The short answer
- In-shell black oil costs about $1.80 per pound eaten against $2.60 for hearts, so hearts are roughly 44% dearer for the food a bird actually swallows.
- Buy hearts for what they remove: no hull under the feeder, no bare circle in the lawn, nothing sprouting in the border, nothing to sweep off a deck.
- In-shell wins in heat and rain: a hull is a waterproof jacket, and hearts can spoil in 36 to 48 hours of warm wet weather.
- Spoilage widens the price gap rather than closing it. Lose a tenth of a fill and hearts work out at about $2.89 per pound eaten.
- Hearts also rate higher with grackles, starlings and house sparrows than in-shell seed does, because there is no hull to crack.
Buy sunflower hearts if the ground under your feeder is decking, paving, a path, a patio, a balcony floor, a border you plant or the edge of a pond, and if you can commit to small fills. Buy in-shell black oil sunflower if the ground is lawn or rough grass, if your summers are hot and wet, or if you want to fill a feeder and leave it for a week. Hearts are the more expensive seed and they stay the more expensive seed after you subtract the hull, so treat the premium as the price of a clean surface rather than as something the arithmetic will cancel out.
Three prices, and only one of them is real#

The middle row is the only one worth quoting. One pound of in-shell seed contains about 0.75 lb of kernel, so $1.35 / 0.75 = $1.80 per pound eaten. Hearts are all kernel, so their shelf price is already the eaten price. Hulling closes half the apparent gap and leaves the other half standing: you are paying about 44% more for the food that goes into a bird, and what you get for it is the removal of every hull from your yard. The costs that are not on either price tag#
Hull, by weight. A moderately busy station gets through something like 40 lb of black oil across a northern winter. At a 75% kernel yield that is about 10 lb of hull delivered onto the ground beneath the feeder, in a circle two to three feet across. Ten pounds is less than the seed bag suggests and quite enough to matter: it mats, it holds water, and sunflower shell suppresses the growth of whatever is underneath it. Expect bare ground by spring. Raking it counts as a cost, and so does moving the feeder every year to spread the damage. Spoilage, on the hearts side. This is the mirror image and it is larger than the hull cost in a wet climate. A hull is a waterproof jacket: in-shell seed survives a rainy week in an open tray and is still sound inside. Hearts have no jacket, water reaches the oily kernel on contact, and the 51% fat content means it goes greasy rather than simply damp.
Fill volume, quietly. Hearts pack denser than seed in the shell, so a tube filled to the same line holds noticeably more weight, and more money, than you are used to. It also takes longer to clear, which is the wrong direction given how fast hearts spoil.
Where the shell earns its keep#
Price, plainly. In-shell black oil is the cheapest way to put sunflower into a bird, and it stays cheapest after the hull is taken out of the weight. If the seed budget is what is bothering you, this is the end of the comparison.
Rain and heat. In July on the Gulf Coast, in-shell seed is the only sensible choice for a feeder that is not under cover. Humidity alone will spoil hearts in two days.
Long fills. If you visit a cabin at weekends, or you cannot get to the feeder daily in deep winter, the hull is doing preservation work for you.
Calories per dollar. In a hard freeze, when small birds are burning fat overnight, in-shell black oil delivers about 44% more energy per dollar than hearts. On a station eating 40 lb across a winter that is real money, and it is the same 44% seen from the other end.
The birds you would rather not feed. Grackles rate hearts a 4 and in-shell black oil a 3. Starlings go from 2 to 3, house sparrows from 3 to 4. Removing the hull removes the handling effort, and handling effort is a mild filter. If a grackle flock already troubles your station, hearts will make it worse, not better.
Where hearts win outright#
None of these are price arguments. Every one of them is a thing the hull does to your yard.
Hard surfaces. On a deck, a patio, a balcony or a paved path, hull is not a cosmetic issue, it is a weekly sweeping job and a slip hazard when wet. There is no contest here, and it is why balcony feeding is nearly always a hearts operation.
Ground litter and what grows in it. The mat under an in-shell feeder kills the grass, holds damp, and feeds rodents on the seed that falls with the hull. Hearts leave nothing to rake and nothing to rot.
Window feeders. A window feeder hangs over whatever is below it, usually a sill, a path or a flowerbed you care about. Hearts remove the problem entirely.
Small birds in a hurry. Goldfinches, siskins and juncos all rate hearts a notch above in-shell black oil, because a heart is food and a seed is a task. In a cold snap that difference in handling time matters to a 13 g bird. The same goes for any bird that struggles with a hull, which is why hearts are the usual answer at a station full of small finches.
No germination. In-shell seed that reaches soil sprouts, and a feeder over a border grows a crop of sunflower seedlings every spring. Hearts are dead and will not, which for a planted bed is worth more than the seed costs.
The decision, in one rule#
Look down, then look up.
- Look down at the surface under the feeder. Hard or planted, choose hearts and accept the 44%: you are buying the sweeping, the raking and the weeding out of your year. Lawn or rough ground, choose in-shell, because the hull falls somewhere it does no harm.
- Look up at your climate in the season you feed most. Warm and wet, choose in-shell unless you can commit to two-day fills. Cold and dry, hearts are safe for a fortnight.
- If those two disagree, which is the usual outcome for a deck in a humid summer, keep the hearts and shrink the fill. A quarter-full feeder emptied every two days costs nothing extra and removes the spoilage risk completely.
When neither, and when both#
If the real complaint is cost rather than mess, this comparison has already answered you: run in-shell black oil, which is among the best calories per dollar of any food we track, and look for the leak somewhere else. Usually it is the pest share of the feeder rather than the seed, so work through safflower versus sunflower instead.
If the real complaint is mess but you also want a big capacity feeder for winter, run both. Hearts in the small feeder over the hard surface, in-shell in the big hopper over the lawn. Buying two bags is not a compromise, it is what the constraint actually calls for, and it keeps the expensive seed in fills small enough to stay sound. Keep both in sealed containers off the floor as described in storing birdseed, because hearts go rancid in the shed as readily as they do in the feeder.

Are sunflower hearts actually cheaper than seed in the shell?
No. At benchmark prices in-shell black oil is $1.35 a pound at a 75% kernel yield, so the part a bird eats costs about $1.80 a pound. Hearts are $2.60 a pound and all of it is edible, which makes them about 44% dearer per pound eaten. Subtracting the hull does narrow the gap from the 93% the two price tags imply, but it does not close it, and it never reverses it. Buy hearts for what they take away from under the feeder, not to save money on seed.
How fast do sunflower hearts go bad?
In warm wet weather, faster than most people expect. Hearts darken within 12 hours of getting wet, turn greasy and sour by 36 hours, and cement into a plug at the base of a feeder by around 48. Visible mold follows. In cold dry weather the same fill can sit for two weeks without trouble. This is a summer and shoulder-season problem far more than a January one, and in the Deep South and Gulf Coast humidity alone does it year round.
Do sunflower hulls really kill grass?
A thick mat of them does. Hulls smother the sward, hold water against the crowns, and sunflower shell contains compounds that suppress the growth of other plants. The result under a busy feeder is a bare circle two to three feet across within a season. Moving the feeder a few feet each spring, or feeding over a tray you can empty, prevents it. So does switching to hearts, which is the cleanest fix and the reason most deck feeders end up running them.
Which seed brings in more birds?
Effectively the same list, with two differences. Goldfinches, siskins and juncos rate hearts a notch above in-shell black oil because they get the kernel without the work. So do grackles, starlings and house sparrows, for the same reason, which is a point against hearts in a yard with a pest problem. Every species that eats one eats the other, so this is not a decision about species so much as about effort and mess.
Can I use hearts in any feeder?
In any seed feeder with an appropriate port, yes, but grade matters. Whole hearts and medium chips flow through a standard 3/8 in sunflower port. Fine chips pour out of it and belong in a fine-mesh or nyjer-style feeder instead. Whatever the feeder, it needs drainage in the base and a base you can remove, because hearts and standing water are the fastest route to a moldy feeder there is.
