Winter Bird Feeding: Energy, Ice and the Two Fills That Matter
Winter feeding is an energy problem with a hygiene problem attached, and both have numbers you can work with.
The short answer
- A small songbird can lose a large fraction of its body mass overnight in hard cold and has to rebuild it the next day, which is why the pre-dusk fill and the pre-dawn fill matter more than the total amount you put out.
- Fat is the whole point. Suet carries about 740 kcal per 100 g against 584 for sunflower kernel and 365 for cracked corn, so a single suet cake holds roughly the usable energy of 11,000 sunflower kernels.
- In freezing rain, hulled foods beat in-shell foods: sunflower hearts and shelled peanuts stay usable when black oil seed freezes into a solid block.
- Open water is scarcer than food in a hard freeze and a thermostatically controlled heater is the single highest-value winter addition after suet. Never add glycerine, salt or antifreeze to a bird bath.
- Birds do not depend on your feeder, but supplemental food measurably helps at the margins: prolonged deep cold, ice storms that seal natural food away, and deep snow that buries it.
A chickadee weighs about as much as four pennies and it has to get through fourteen hours of darkness at minus 15 without eating. It does that by going to roost fat and burning that fat all night, shivering. By dawn a meaningful slice of its body mass is gone, and the entire next day is spent putting it back on. That cycle, spend all night, earn all day, is what winter feeding is actually about.
The overnight bill#
Work the numbers with our own food data and a conservative model of small-bird energy use. A black-capped chickadee weighs about 11 g. Call its midwinter daily requirement roughly 10 kcal. That is our working figure, not a measurement, but it is the right order of magnitude.
Now price the food.

Two things fall out of that table. Suet is not a treat, it is the most concentrated fuel you can hang up. And a feeder is nowhere near a single bird's whole diet: even in February, feeder food is a fraction of what a bird eats in a day, which is exactly why nobody should feel trapped by a feeder they filled once.

Read the suet and peanut columns first. Those are your winter workhorses, and they reach the clingers, the birds least able to switch to ground foraging under snow.
The two fills that matter#
Feeder traffic in winter is not flat across the day. It is two spikes with a lull between.
- First light. Birds arrive with an overnight deficit and feed hard for roughly the first hour. A feeder filled at 9 am has missed the most urgent meal of the day.
- Last hour before roost. This is the fat-loading window. Birds are not hungry now, they are banking. A feeder that ran empty at 3 pm on a short January day has failed at the fill that most affects whether a small bird gets through the night.
So the practical routine is: top up before dusk, not in the morning. Fill in the late afternoon, and the feeder is both loaded for the roost-time rush and still full at dawn. If you only get to it once a day, do it then.
Snow, ice and the feeder that stops working#
Winter failures are mechanical, not nutritional. The feeder is full and the birds cannot get at the food.
Snow in the ports. Wind-driven snow packs into tube ports, melts slightly against the seed and refreezes into a plug. A wide roof or a clear dome hung above the feeder stops most of it. A hopper feeder with deep eaves solves it by design, which is why hoppers earn their keep in snow country.
Frozen seed blocks. Freezing rain welds in-shell seed into a crust that a chickadee cannot break. This is the argument for keeping a bag of sunflower hearts in reserve: hulled food stays loose and usable through an ice event. Shelled peanuts behave the same way.
Buried ground feeding. Juncos, sparrows, doves and cardinals do a lot of their feeding on the ground, and 8 in of snow removes that entirely. Shovel a patch under a shrub, or set a low tray on top of the snow and scatter millet and hearts there. It is the single fastest way to add species during a snow event.
Suet gone rock hard. Very cold suet is fine for woodpeckers, which chisel, but harder for chickadees. Suet plugs pressed into a log, or a cake in a cage with a tail-prop board, both make it easier. More on formats in suet for birds.
Wet seed at the base. Snow melting off a roof and running down a feeder is the winter version of the summer mold problem. Empty the bottom inch every time you refill rather than topping up over it.
Water is the thing nobody provides#
In a hard freeze, food is available across the landscape and open water is not. Birds need water to digest, and eating snow to get it costs body heat they cannot spare. A yard with the only open water for several blocks will pull in species that never touch a seed feeder, robins and bluebirds among them.
What works:
- A bath with a thermostatically controlled immersion heater, or a purpose-built heated bath. Both switch on only near freezing, so running cost is far lower than people assume.
- Depth of 1 to 2 in, with a few flat stones or gravel so birds can stand and drink without wading. Deep open water in extreme cold is a risk, not a service.
- Placement in sun, out of the wind, with cover 10 to 12 ft away but not directly overhanging.
What does not work, and is dangerous: glycerine, salt, alcohol or any antifreeze additive. All of them can be lethal or can wreck the insulating properties of feathers. The full setup is on bird baths and water.
Shelter and roosting#
Food is only half of the overnight equation. The other half is where a bird spends the night.
Dense evergreens, brush piles and any cavity that blocks wind all reduce the energy a bird burns between dusk and dawn. If your yard has none, a brush pile made from the Christmas tree in January is a genuine and free improvement, and it doubles as escape cover from the hawk that follows your flock.
A roost box is a nest box turned upside down in concept:
- Entrance hole near the bottom, so heat rises and stays trapped above the birds.
- Staggered perches inside so several birds can share, which is the point.
- Ventilation holes closed for the winter.
- Clean out old nest material in autumn, before the cold arrives.
Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, bluebirds and Carolina wrens all use them, sometimes with several birds packed into one box on the worst nights. Site it 6 to 10 ft up with the entrance facing away from the prevailing wind, usually south or east.
Where to put things when it is cold#
Placement changes slightly in winter. You want feeders close enough to cover that birds can break for it in one hop, because a hunting hawk works feeder flocks all season, but not so close that a cat can use the cover as a hide. The 10 to 12 ft rule from feeder placement still applies, with two winter additions: put the feeder where you can reach it at 4 pm in the dark without crossing sheet ice, and site it where a snow load sliding off a roof will not flatten it.
Do they actually need you?#
Honestly: no, not in the way the phrase implies. Feeder birds forage over a wide area and use any one feeder as a supplement. Supplemental food helps at the margins when conditions are genuinely harsh, and birds that lose a feeder they have used for years shift back to natural foraging without a penalty. What that means in practice:
- Going away for a week in a normal winter is fine. The birds will redistribute in a day or two.
- Keeping the feeder running through a specific extreme event, an ice storm, a week below zero, a deep snow burial, is the version of winter feeding that most plausibly matters.
- Hygiene is not optional, because winter concentrates birds. Clean every 3 to 4 weeks in hard frost, and immediately if you see a bird that sits fluffed and does not flush.

How do I stop my bird feeder freezing or filling with snow?
Cover it and change the seed type. A wide roof or a clear weather dome above a tube keeps snow out of the ports, and a hopper with deep eaves does the same by design. In freezing rain, switch to sunflower hearts and shelled peanuts: hulled foods do not freeze into the solid crust that in-shell seed forms. Should I put out water for birds in freezing weather?
Yes, and it may matter more than seed. Birds cannot digest food efficiently without water, and eating snow costs body heat. A thermostatically controlled heated bath or a heater in an existing bath keeps a patch open. Keep it shallow, 1 to 2 in, with stones or gravel for footing so birds can drink without submerging. Never add glycerine, salt or antifreeze, all of which are harmful, and never let a bath heat far above ambient.
Will birds die if I stop feeding in the middle of winter?
Almost certainly not. Feeder birds forage across a wide area and treat any one feeder as a single source among many, and the evidence is that they redistribute within days when a feeder runs dry. The exception worth taking seriously is a multi-day extreme event, an ice storm or a deep cold snap, when natural food is physically sealed away. If you can, keep the feeder running through those specific windows, and do not lose sleep over a two-week holiday in a normal winter.
Do birds use roost boxes in winter?
Yes, especially chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, bluebirds and wrens. A roost box differs from a nest box in three ways: the entrance sits near the bottom so warm air is trapped above, the inside has staggered perches for several birds, and the ventilation holes are closed. A standard nest box can be adapted or simply left up and cleaned out in autumn, and a group of small birds sharing one cavity on a bitter night is a genuine survival advantage.
