Bird baths and water: the depth, the movement and the cleaning schedule

Half an inch of water at the edge, two inches at the deepest point, and something making it move. Everything else is detail.

The short answer

  • Water attracts a wider range of species than any feeder, because every bird drinks and bathes while only some eat seed.
  • Depth is the thing most baths get wrong: 0.5 to 1 in at the edge, sloping to no more than 2 in at the deepest point.
  • Moving water is the single biggest upgrade available. A dripper or a wiggler transforms a quiet bath, because birds find water by sound before they see it.
  • Change and scrub the water every 2 to 3 days in summer. That interval also breaks the mosquito cycle before larvae can emerge.
  • Never add antifreeze, glycerine, salt or any additive to winter water. Use a thermostatically controlled heater or carry warm water out twice a day.

Every bird in your yard drinks. Only some of them eat seed. That single asymmetry is why a shallow dish of clean water outperforms a fourth feeder, and why the species list at a good bath is longer than the list at the best-stocked feeding station in the same yard.

Read the robin row. Fruit and mealworms, and essentially nothing else on the seed side. If you want American robins in the yard, seed is not the lever. Water is. The same goes for warblers, vireos, tanagers, thrushes and waxwings, which pass through most yards every spring and autumn and will not touch a feeder.

Depth is what most baths get wrong#

The classic concrete pedestal bath is a bowl 4 in deep with vertical sides and a glazed surface. Birds drink from it and refuse to bathe in it, because a bird that cannot stand and cannot get purchase will not commit.

A gentle slope from edge to center gives every size of bird a place to stand at its own comfortable depth. That is why a shallow saucer with a sloping floor outperforms a deep bowl, and why an upturned dustbin lid on three bricks works better than most sold baths.

Grip and texture#

Wet glazed ceramic is slippery, and a bird that slips once is slow to come back. The floor of a bath needs texture: rough stone, unglazed terracotta, molded resin with a pattern, or gravel laid over a smooth base.

Test it with your fingertips. If you can slide a wet finger across the floor with no resistance, the birds are having the same experience with their feet. Grip matters more in a deep basin than a shallow one, because in a shallow one the bird is standing on a floor either way.

Height and placement#

Ground level is where most birds naturally drink, and a ground-level dish will always be busy. It is also where cats hunt. The compromise most yards need:

  • A ground or low bath (0 to 12 in) for sparrows, juncos, towhees and doves, sited in the open with a clear view in every direction.
  • A raised bath (24 to 36 in) for the smaller perching birds and for anywhere with a cat problem. Height is not a defense on its own, but it removes the ambush from long grass.
  • Cover at 10 to 12 ft, not closer. A wet bird flies badly. It needs a branch it can reach in one hop, but a shrub touching the basin is a hiding place for a predator. The same logic governs where to put a bird feeder.
  • Partial shade. Full sun heats the water, accelerates algae and evaporates the basin dry by mid-afternoon in July. Full shade under a tree fills it with debris. Dappled or half-day shade is the target.

Moving water, and why it changes everything#

This is the highest-return upgrade in the entire water setup, and most people skip it.

Birds locate water by sound. Moving water carries. A still basin is visually indistinguishable from a patio slab to a bird flying overhead, but a drip that ticks about once a second is audible from a long way off and reads unambiguously as water. It is also the difference between a bath used by your resident house finches and a bath that pulls in migrants passing through.

Three ways to do it, in increasing order of cost and effect:

  1. A drip. A reservoir with a small hole, or a supply line with a valve set to a slow drip. One drop per second is enough. The simplest version is a bucket with a pinhole hung above the basin.
  2. A wiggler or agitator. A small unit, often solar, that sits in the water and disturbs the surface. Less audible than a drip but visually obvious and effective against mosquitoes.
  3. A recirculating pump with a small fall. Water dropping even 3 in onto the surface makes the most sound. Needs power and needs cleaning, and produces the biggest species list.

The summer cleaning interval#

Change the water every two to three days from late spring through summer, and scrub the basin at least weekly. Both parts matter. Refilling a slimy bowl with clean water gives you clean water in a dirty bowl for about an hour.

A working routine:

  1. Tip the old water out away from the bath, not into the surrounding soil where it will splash back.
  2. Scrub the basin with a stiff brush. No detergent needed for a routine clean; the mechanical scrubbing is what removes the biofilm.
  3. Rinse and refill with cold tap water.
  4. Once a week, or after any sick bird, disinfect: one part household bleach to nine parts water, ten minutes, then rinse very thoroughly and let it dry in sun before refilling. That is the same dilution used in how to clean a bird feeder.

Water is a disease vector in exactly the same way a feeder is, and for trichomonosis in particular it may be the faster route. A bath comes down along with the feeders when sick birds appear.

Mosquitoes: the interval solves it#

A mosquito needs roughly seven to ten days of undisturbed standing water in warm weather to get from egg to flying adult. A bath changed every two to three days never gets there. The larvae go out with the water each time.

That means the mosquito answer and the hygiene answer are the same answer, and neither requires a product. If a bath is genuinely being neglected for a week at a time, add a wiggler: a surface that never settles is a surface mosquitoes will not lay on.

The one to watch is not the bath itself but everything around it: a saucer under a planter, a sagging tarp, a blocked gutter, an old wheelbarrow. Those hold water for weeks and nobody changes them.

Winter water#

In much of Canada and the northern United States, open water in January is scarcer than food and harder for a bird to manufacture. Snow is not a substitute: melting it costs a bird body heat it cannot spare. A reliable winter water source will draw birds that never come to your seed.

Water is often the missing half of a winter feeding station. Keep winter depth to the shallow end of the range, about 1 in. Birds will drink in cold weather and should mostly not bathe in it; a deeper basin invites soaking on the days that matter most. Site the winter bath in sun and out of wind, and shovel a path to it, because you will be less diligent in February than you imagine in November.

What water brings that seed does not#

Keep a list for a year and the difference becomes obvious. Along with the usual feeder crowd, a good bath in a yard with reasonable native cover and structure turns up warblers on migration, thrushes, waxwings, vireos, tanagers and, in the West and Southwest, hummingbirds working a fine spray. Almost none of those will ever be recorded at your feeders.

That is the argument for treating water as a first-class part of the station rather than an ornament. It is also the cheapest part: a shallow saucer, a stone, and a bucket with a hole in it. Frequently asked questions#

How deep should a bird bath be?

Half an inch to one inch at the edge, sloping to two inches at most in the middle. A chickadee is about 11 g and stands in water; a robin at 77 g wants a little more depth to splash in. Two inches serves both. Anything deeper is a bath that birds drink from and refuse to bathe in, and a hazard for fledglings. If your basin is deep, do not replace it: put a flat stone or a layer of pea gravel in the bottom to raise the floor and give grip.

How often should I clean a bird bath?

Change the water every two to three days in summer, and scrub the basin at least weekly. In heat, or where a bath is heavily used, do both more often. The scrub matters as much as the change: a slick biofilm on the basin holds bacteria and regrows within days. Tip out, scrub with a stiff brush, rinse and refill. Use a disinfectant only after a sick bird, in which case use one part household bleach to nine parts water, then rinse thoroughly.

Do I need moving water?

You do not need it, but nothing else you can add produces a comparable jump in visits. Birds locate water by sound as much as by sight, and a still basin makes no sound at all. A dripper on a slow drip, a solar wiggler on the surface, or a small recirculating pump will bring in birds that ignored the same bath when it was still, including species that never touch a seed feeder. Movement also keeps mosquitoes from laying.

Can I put anything in the water to stop it freezing?

No. Antifreeze is lethal. Glycerine coats feathers and destroys their insulating structure, which can kill a bird in cold weather even though the substance itself is not toxic. Salt is harmful too. The only safe options are a thermostatically controlled bird bath heater, an immersion de-icer rated for bird baths, or carrying out warm water once or twice a day and accepting that it will freeze between visits.

Will a bird bath breed mosquitoes?

Only if you neglect it. Mosquitoes need about seven to ten days of undisturbed standing water in warm weather to go from egg to flying adult. Where should I put a bird bath?

In the open enough that a bathing bird can see a cat coming, with cover 10 to 12 ft away so a wet bird has somewhere to reach in one flight. Wet birds fly poorly, so a bath tucked against a dense shrub is an ambush point. Shade for part of the day slows algae and keeps the water cooler. Keep it clear of the ground under a feeder, where hulls and droppings will fall into it.
