Feeder Placement, Safety and Maintenance
A feeder is not a purchase, it is four decisions: position, safety, hygiene and hardware. Get those right and almost any feeder works.
The short answer
- Position decides your species list more than the feeder does: cover at 10 to 12 ft, glass either under 3 ft or over 30 ft, and 7 to 10 ft of clear air around the pole.
- The two feeder hazards worth engineering against are window glass and free-roaming cats. Hawks are not a problem to solve, they are a sign the station is working.
- Cleaning is an interval, not an event. Two weeks in mild dry weather, weekly in heat, humidity or heavy traffic, and immediately if you see a sick bird.
- The pole and baffle do more anti-squirrel work than any feeder mechanism, and unlike a mechanism they cannot wear out.
- Fix problems in this order: position, then hygiene, then hardware, then the feeder itself. Most people start at the end of that list.
Four things decide whether a feeding station works. Where it stands, whether the birds using it survive the visit, how often it gets washed, and what holds it up. Nothing else on the shopping list comes close, and three of the four cost nothing.
That is worth saying plainly because the usual order is backwards. People buy a feeder, hang it somewhere convenient, fill it, and then spend two years fighting squirrels, mold and an empty yard with more purchases. Every one of those problems is downstream of a decision made in the first ten minutes.
Position: the decision you make once and live with#
Rule of thumb: escape cover 10 to 12 ft away, glass either under 3 ft or over 30 ft, feeder head at 5 to 6 ft, and 7 to 10 ft of clear air on every side.
Why: every one of those numbers is a compromise between two animals that want different things.
Cover at 10 to 12 ft is the clearest example. Small birds will not feed in the open for long because they need somewhere to bolt to when a shadow crosses the yard, and a shrub 4 ft away gets used within minutes. But that same shrub is where a cat lies down. Ten to twelve feet is the distance that still reads as a safe destination to a chickadee while being too far for an ambush to succeed. Closer than about 5 ft and you have built a cat trap. Further than about 15 ft and shy species such as juncos and sparrows simply will not commit to the trip.
Height is a servicing number as much as a safety one. At 5 to 6 ft you can reach the lid without a ladder, in a coat, holding a bucket, in the dark, in February. Feeders hung at 8 ft get filled less often and cleaned much less often, and a feeder that is inconvenient to clean stops being cleaned.
Position also silently selects your birds, because the same seed at three different heights feeds three different sets of species.

Chickadees and downies work vertical surfaces at head height. Cardinals want a stable platform. Juncos and doves want the ground under it. A yard with one feeder at one height sees a third of the list it could see. Safety: two hazards worth engineering against#
Rule of thumb: treat glass and cats as design problems. Treat hawks as weather.
Why: window collisions are a leading human-related cause of bird mortality in North America, and free-roaming cats kill birds at feeders as a matter of routine. Both are addressable with placement and hardware. A hawk taking a house finch is not a malfunction, it is the ecosystem using your feeder the same way the finches are.
The 3 ft / 30 ft rule works because feeder distance sets impact speed, not just collision frequency, and if your feeder sits between those two distances the cheap fix is to move it closer to the glass rather than further away. Cats are a spacing problem plus a timing problem. The spacing part is the 10 to 12 ft cover rule and keeping low dense vegetation clear within about 5 ft of the feeder base. The timing part is harder: a station fed at dawn concentrates birds at exactly the hour cats hunt. Hygiene: an interval, not an event#
Rule of thumb: every two weeks, weekly in heat or damp, and immediately on seeing a sick bird. Empty the feeder completely each time rather than topping it up.
Why: a feeder is a shared surface where dozens of birds a day put their bills in the same place. Wet seed grows mold, and hulls accumulating underneath grow more. Salmonellosis, house finch eye disease and avian pox all move faster where birds crowd, and the crowding is something you built.
The interval matters more than the technique because contamination is a function of time and moisture, not of visible dirt. The most common failure is not a dirty feeder, it is a feeder that looks fine because the plastic is clear while the bottom inch holds a set plug of damp seed. Hardware: the pole is doing more work than the feeder#
Rule of thumb: a 1 in steel pole, set 18 to 24 in into the ground, with a baffle whose top sits about 5 ft up, 7 to 10 ft from anything a squirrel can launch from.
Why: squirrel resistance is geometry, and geometry does not wear out. Mechanisms do. A weight-activated feeder has a spring, a pivot and a tolerance, and all three age in weather. A baffle at the right height on a pole with the right clearance is just a shape a squirrel cannot get past, in year one and in year nine.
The same logic covers raccoons, which are stronger and better climbers and which show up at 2am to empty a station in one visit. A baffle sized and mounted for squirrels usually handles raccoons as a side effect. A feeder mechanism does not.
Pole diameter is the part people skip. A thin shepherd's hook flexes, and flex is what lets a squirrel bounce a feeder until seed spills, and what lets wind swing a feeder into a wall until it cracks. Rigidity is a feature.

Fix things in this order#
When a station is not working, the temptation is to change the feeder. It is almost always the wrong variable. Work down this list and stop when the problem goes away:
- Position. Move it. Cover, clearance, height, glass distance. Free.
- Hygiene. Empty and wash everything, and rake the hulls out from underneath. Free.
- Food. One seed the local birds actually eat, in place of a mix they sort through. Cheap.
- Hardware. Pole, baffle, clearance. Moderate.
- The feeder itself. Last. Genuinely last.

What is the single most important thing to get right when setting up a bird feeder?
Position. A feeder in the wrong place gets ignored, raided or turns into a window-strike hazard, and no amount of expensive hardware fixes any of that. Give the feeder escape cover about 10 to 12 ft away, keep it either within 3 ft of glass or more than 30 ft from it, and leave 7 to 10 ft of clear air on every side so nothing can jump to it. Those three distances settle most of what happens in a yard before you have chosen a feeder or a seed.
How often do bird feeders really need cleaning?
Every two weeks as a baseline, weekly in summer heat, in humid weather or when traffic is heavy, and every two to three days for nectar feeders in hot weather. The interval is driven by moisture and crowding, not by how dirty the feeder looks. A tube can look clean through the plastic and still hold a plug of wet, moldy seed in the bottom inch, which is exactly where the risk sits.
Should I take my feeders down if a bird looks sick?
Yes. Take everything down for at least two weeks, clean it fully, and rake up the hulls underneath. Feeders concentrate birds at shared surfaces, which is how salmonellosis, house finch eye disease and avian pox move through a local population. Also take feeders down if a wildlife agency issues that advice for your area during a salmonellosis or avian influenza event, and follow their timing rather than your own.
Do I need a squirrel-proof feeder or a baffle?
A baffle on a correctly sited pole, in almost every case. A baffle has no moving parts, works on raccoons as well as squirrels, and costs less than a mechanical feeder. It only works if the geometry is right: about 5 ft of clear pole under the feeder, 7 to 10 ft of clear air horizontally, and nothing overhanging within about 9 ft. Where should I not put a bird feeder?
Under a low overhanging branch, against a fence, next to a deck rail, in a hedge, or 6 to 15 ft from a large window. The first four are squirrel launch pads. The last is the window-strike death zone: far enough that a startled bird builds up speed, close enough that it cannot avoid the glass. Also avoid low dense cover within about 5 ft, which is where a cat waits.
