Squirrel baffle placement calculator
Squirrel-proofing is geometry, not gear. Five measurements decide whether your feeder is reachable.
The short answer
- A gray squirrel can jump about 4 ft straight up from the ground and 8 to 10 ft horizontally, further if it starts from above the target.
- The working rule is 5-7-9: baffle at least 4.5 to 5 ft up, at least 7 to 8 ft of clear air horizontally, at least 9 ft of clear air above.
- Baffle diameter matters as much as height. Under about 15 in across, a squirrel can reach past the edge and get a grip on the pole.
- Snow is the variable that quietly breaks a correct setup: 18 in of settled snow raises the launch floor by 18 in.

Where the numbers come from#
The 5-7-9 rule circulates in bird feeding circles as three numbers with no explanation attached. Here is what each one is protecting against.
Vertical: about 4 to 5 ft. A gray squirrel launching from flat ground can reach roughly 4 ft straight up. So a baffle whose lower rim sits at 4.5 ft is right at the edge of what a squirrel can reach, and 5 ft gives you margin. Note the reference surface: it is whatever the squirrel can stand on. A raised bed, a snowdrift or a stack of firewood under the pole resets the whole calculation.
Horizontal: 7 to 10 ft. Squirrels regularly cross 8 ft of open air between fixed points, and they are better at it than most people expect because they aim for anything they can grab, not just a landing platform. Eight feet is the working minimum. Ten is comfortable.
Overhead: 9 ft and up. This is the one people forget. A squirrel dropping from a branch is not jumping, it is falling with steering, and it can cover far more distance downward than it can sideways. If there is a branch 5 ft above your feeder, none of the rest of your geometry matters.

What this calculator cannot tell you#
It assumes a pole in open ground. If your feeder hangs from a branch, the geometry is different: the squirrel comes down the line rather than up the pole, so you need a dome baffle above the feeder and enough distance from the trunk and neighboring branches on both sides. That case is covered in baffles and poles.
It also assumes gray squirrels. Red squirrels are lighter and less able to jump, but far better at squeezing through small gaps, so cage mesh size matters more than baffle height for them. Flying squirrels arrive at night from above and are not stopped by any of this. If your feeder is emptying overnight, read raccoons before you blame a squirrel.
Frequently asked questions#
How high should a squirrel baffle be?
The bottom of the baffle should sit at least 4.5 ft above whatever a squirrel can stand on, which in winter means above the snow line, not above the grass. A gray squirrel jumps about 4 ft vertically from a standing start, so 4.5 ft is the minimum with almost no margin and 5 ft is the sensible target. Anything lower is a step rather than a barrier.
How far does a bird feeder need to be from a tree?
At least 8 ft of clear horizontal air from any branch, fence top, deck rail, roof edge or wall a squirrel can launch from, and 10 ft is safer. Squirrels routinely clear 8 ft on the flat and can do considerably better dropping downhill from a high branch, which is why the vertical clearance above the feeder matters as much as the distance to the side.
Do baffles work on hanging feeders?
Yes, but you need a dome baffle above the feeder rather than a cone below it, and the feeder still has to be far enough from the trunk and from branches on either side. A dome needs to be wide, at least 15 to 18 in, and hung so a squirrel sliding down the line cannot reach around it. On a branch, distance is doing most of the work.
Why does my baffle not work?
In order of likelihood: the baffle is too low, the baffle is too narrow, there is a launch point you have stopped noticing (a washing line, a trellis, a snowdrift, a garden chair), or the squirrel is climbing the feeder's own hanging chain from a branch above. Measure rather than estimate. People routinely underestimate horizontal distances by several feet.
