Feeding Birds Through the Year
Five things change through the year, and the weather is only one of them.
The short answer
- Feed all year if you want to. What changes season to season is the food you offer, how fast it spoils and how often you clean, not whether feeding is allowed.
- Wild food supply is the single biggest driver of feeder traffic. Late summer and early autumn are the peak of natural abundance, which is exactly when feeders look abandoned.
- A small bird's daily energy need rises sharply between a mild autumn day and a still, sub-zero winter night, which is why fat foods matter in January and barely register in July.
- Molt, migration and breeding each pull birds away from feeders at predictable times, so an empty feeder in July or late August is usually a calendar event, not a fault.
- The only routine that has to scale with the season is hygiene: nectar every 2 days in summer heat, seed feeders weekly in warm damp weather, every 3 to 4 weeks in hard frost.
Your feeder does not change between January and July. The birds change completely. The same tube that empties in two days in a February cold snap can sit untouched for a fortnight in late July, and nothing about it has broken. What moved was the world around it.
Five variables drive almost everything you will notice at a feeder over twelve months. Learn what each one does and the year stops being a series of surprises.
The five variables#
Natural food supply. This is the big one. Wild food is not evenly spread through the year: it collapses in late winter and peaks in late summer. Feeder traffic runs almost exactly inverse to it.
Energy demand. A small bird burns fuel to hold body temperature. Colder air and longer nights mean a bigger overnight bill, and a bird that cannot pay it does not survive to morning.
Molt. Feathers wear out and get replaced, mostly in late summer. Growing a full set of new feathers is expensive in protein and it makes birds slow and cautious, so they stay in cover.
Migration. Half the birds you see in January are somewhere else in June, and vice versa. Two brief windows a year bring species through that you may see for ten days and never again.
Breeding. During nesting, adults are foraging for insects to feed chicks, not seed for themselves, and their movement patterns tighten around a nest site.
The wild food curve, and where a feeder sits on it#
Feeders are a supplement laid on top of a natural supply that swings wildly. This table is the shape of the year as it plays out in most of the continent's temperate middle.

The practical version: your feeder matters least in August and most in the week after an ice storm. Everything in the month-by-month calendar follows from that single curve.
What cold actually costs a bird#
Here is the arithmetic, using the energy figures in our own food data and a working estimate of what a small passerine burns. Treat it as a model, not a measurement.
A black-capped chickadee weighs about 11 g. In midwinter, a bird that size plausibly needs on the order of 10 kcal a day to hold temperature, forage and survive a long night. A black oil sunflower seed yields roughly 0.036 g of kernel at 5.84 kcal per gram, so about 0.21 kcal of usable energy per seed. That is somewhere near 50 sunflower kernels a day if the bird ate nothing else, every day, from a standing start each morning, with no fat reserve to fall back on.

Now look at the suet row. At 740 kcal per 100 g, a standard 11 oz suet cake carries roughly 2,300 kcal, which is the same usable energy as something like 11,000 sunflower kernels. That is the entire reason suet is a winter food and a summer nuisance: in January it is the most efficient thing a woodpecker can find, and in July it is a puddle.
Molt: the season nobody mentions#
Between roughly July and September, most adult songbirds replace their feathers. It is a protein-hungry process and it leaves birds looking terrible: bald-headed jays, cardinals with naked gray faces, goldfinch males fading from yellow to olive. They also become quiet and stay in thick cover, because a bird missing flight feathers is a slower bird.
The result is that the emptiest weeks of the feeder year sit right on top of the ugliest weeks. Do not read either as illness. If you want the diagnostic difference between a molting bird and a sick one, that split matters more than anything else on the autumn page.
Migration writes your list twice#
Two short windows reshuffle your species list. In spring, birds moving north pass through in pulses tied to weather fronts, and some of them stop at feeders for a few days only. In autumn the same thing happens more slowly and less visibly, because the birds are not singing.
Winter residents arrive in a fairly reliable order, and departure is just as ordered. Juncos and white-throated sparrows show up as the nights start biting; orioles and hummingbirds vanish between one week and the next. Breeding changes what a feeder is for#
During nesting, almost no North American songbird raises chicks on seed. Nestlings get insects and other invertebrates, because they need protein and water content that seed cannot deliver. That single fact reframes summer feeding: your feeder is not feeding chicks, it is saving foraging time for the adults who are feeding chicks.
It also creates the one genuine hazard of the season. Whole peanuts and large hard chunks can be carried to a nest and choke a chick, so anything nut-sized should be chopped or offered in mesh through nesting season. The rest of the detail is on feeding during nesting season.
Why the summer lull is normal#
Every July, thousands of people conclude their feeder has broken. It has not. Four things are happening at once: natural food is at its annual peak, adults are foraging for insects rather than seed, molt has begun, and the birds that remain are dispersed across a landscape full of food rather than concentrated on your one reliable source.
Here is how to tell a normal lull from a real problem.

What actually changes in your routine#
Only three things need to move with the seasons: portion size, food type and cleaning interval.

The cleaning column is the one that is not optional. Warm damp weather turns spilled seed and old feeder residue into a disease risk far faster than cold weather does, which is why the cleaning routine tightens in exactly the months when the feeder looks least used. Frequently asked questions#
Should I feed birds all year or only in winter?
All year is fine, and in most of North America it is what agencies and bird organizations describe as normal practice. The reasons to change what you offer are practical: plain suet melts and goes rancid above about 70 °F, nectar spoils in days, and seed left damp in July grows mold far faster than seed left out in February. Feed year round, but shrink portion sizes in summer, switch to no-melt fat, and double your cleaning frequency.
Why did all the birds disappear from my feeder in July?
Natural food peaked. Late summer is the point of maximum wild abundance: insects everywhere, seed heads ripening, berries coming in. Birds also finish nesting, begin molting and go quiet and secretive while they replace feathers. A feeder that emptied in three days in February can sit untouched for two weeks in late July with nothing wrong at all. Keep a small amount of fresh seed out, keep water available, and traffic returns in September.
Do birds need my feeder to survive the winter?
No. A feeder is one food source among many, and birds that lose access to one shift to other sources within days. What supplemental food does appear to do is improve odds during specific extreme conditions: prolonged deep cold, ice storms that seal natural food away, deep snow cover. Feed because it helps at the margins and because you want to watch birds, not because they depend on you.
When is the busiest time at a bird feeder?
The coldest weeks of winter, plus two shorter spikes: the last days before a major storm front arrives, and the migration pulses in April to May and September to October. In the north, December to March is a continuous busy season. In the Gulf states and the desert Southwest, the busy window is narrower, often just January and February, with migration providing the year's most interesting days rather than the busiest.
Does what I put out really need to change with the season?
Three things change. Fat: suet in cold weather, no-melt dough or none at all in heat. Protein: mealworms matter most in late spring when adults are carrying food to nestlings. Sugar: nectar and fruit only while orioles and hummingbirds are present in your area. Sunflower and hearts are the constant, taken by nearly every seed-eating feeder bird in every month of the year.
