Sunflower hearts and chips: no hull, no waste, and a short shelf life outdoors
Hulled sunflower still costs about 44% more than in-shell once the shell is subtracted, so buy it for the yard rather than for the budget.
The short answer
- Hearts are 100% edible, so the shelf price is the real price: $2.60 a pound eaten against $1.80 for black oil in the shell. Subtracting hull narrows the gap to about 44%, it does not close it.
- Three grades behave differently: whole hearts flow best and last longest wet, medium chips are the general-purpose choice, fine chips suit finch feeders and spoil fastest.
- Rain is the whole downside. With no hull, water reaches the kernel immediately, and a warm wet 48 hours turns a feeder of hearts into a sour gray plug.
- Fill for two to three days at a time, not for a week. Hearts are already the dearer seed per pound eaten, and a fill spoiled by rain is what turns dearer into wasteful.
- Fine sunflower chips in a finch feeder are rated as highly by goldfinches as nyjer and deliver about 70% more calories per dollar.
Hulled sunflower is the same kernel as black oil in the shell with the packaging removed. Everything good about it and everything bad about it comes from that one difference. Nothing lands on the ground, and nothing protects the seed from weather.
Three grades, and they are not interchangeable#
Bags are labeled inconsistently, so buy on what the seed looks like rather than what it is called.

The practical difference is cut surface. A whole kernel has an intact skin over most of it; a fragment is all cut face. That is why fine chips go greasy first, clog first, and produce the powder that cements into the base of a tube.
Fine chips are also the grade with the most interesting use case, which is finch feeding. It comes up again below.
What it actually costs#
Hearts look roughly twice the price of in-shell seed on the shelf. Subtracting the hull takes part of that away and leaves plenty of it.

The shelf price says hearts cost nearly twice as much. The cost per pound eaten says the premium is about 44%, $2.60 against $1.80, because black oil in the shell is about 75% kernel and hearts are all kernel. The division is set out in best bird seed.
Energy tells the same story. Both are the identical kernel at roughly 584 kcal per 100 g, so per dollar black oil delivers about 44% more calories. Hull is a smaller tax than it looks, which is why hearts have to be justified on mess rather than on money. There is a second cost trap worth naming. Hearts pack denser than seed in the shell, so a tube that holds a certain volume holds appreciably more weight of hearts than of black oil. A "full" feeder is therefore more seed and more money than you are used to, and it will take longer to clear, which is exactly the wrong direction given how fast hearts spoil.
Rain, and why it decides everything#
This is the real downside, and it is bigger than the price.
A sunflower hull is a waterproof jacket. In-shell seed can sit through a wet week in an open tray and still be fine inside. Hearts have no jacket, so water reaches the kernel on contact and the high oil content means it goes greasy rather than simply damp.
The failure sequence, in warm wet weather, runs roughly like this:
- Hours 0 to 12. Seed darkens from cream to tan. Birds still feed.
- Hours 12 to 36. Surfaces turn greasy, a faint sour smell develops, and the seed starts sticking together. Traffic drops noticeably.
- Hours 36 to 48. Fines swell and cement. The bottom of the tube forms a plug, the ports stop delivering, and the feeder looks full while being useless.
- Beyond 48 hours. Visible mold, usually starting at the base. At this point the whole fill goes in the bin and the feeder needs washing, not rinsing.
In cool dry weather the same fill can sit for two weeks without trouble, so this is a summer and shoulder-season problem far more than a January one. In the Deep South and the Gulf Coast, where humidity alone does the job, treat hearts as a two-day food year round.
Three design features genuinely help: a wide weather dome or a deep roof overhang that keeps rain off the ports, drainage holes in the base of the feeder, and a base you can remove for cleaning. Any tube feeder with a glued base is a poor hearts feeder for exactly this reason.
Matching grade to feeder port#
Port size is the difference between feeding birds and pouring seed on the ground.
- Standard sunflower port, about 3/8 in oval. Whole hearts and medium chips are fine. Fine chips run out under their own weight, and you will find a cone of seed under the feeder within a day.
- Slit port, about 1/8 in, sold for nyjer. Fine chips only. Whole hearts bridge and jam.
- Mesh tube, 1/4 in grid. Whole hearts and medium chips cling well, and the open structure dries fast, which offsets the spoilage problem. This is the best all-round hearts feeder if you have one.
- Peanut cage, 1/2 in grid. Too coarse. Everything falls through.
- Tray or window feeder. Any grade, but keep the quantity to a single day's feeding, because a tray has no shelter at all. A window feeder is a good hearts application because you empty and refill it constantly anyway.
The finch trick is worth stating plainly. Goldfinches, lesser goldfinches and pine siskins rate fine sunflower chips as their joint top food alongside nyjer. Chips deliver about 70% more calories per dollar than nyjer does. If you already own a nyjer feeder, filling it with fine chips instead of nyjer is close to a free upgrade, with the single caveat that chips hold moisture worse and need emptying more often.
Decks, patios and balconies#
This is where hearts stop being a preference and become the correct answer.
In-shell seed drops about a quarter of its weight as hull. On grass that is a mowing nuisance and a bare ring. On decking it stains the boards, works into the gaps, and holds water against the timber. On a balcony it blows onto whatever is below you, which is somebody else's problem and therefore quickly your problem too.
Hearts drop almost nothing. What does fall is edible and gets cleaned up by ground birds within a day, or caught by a shallow tray. Combined with a small feeder and daily-scale fills, a hearts station on a balcony can be genuinely tidy, which no in-shell seed ever is. Hearts have the broadest reach of any single food in our dataset, rated 3 or better by 28 of 34 species. Removing the hull promotes several birds a full grade: goldfinches, siskins and juncos go from taking black oil readily to rating hearts top-tier, because the shelling step was the barrier rather than the seed.
That cuts both ways, and it is the argument against hearts nobody makes on a packet.
The same removal of the barrier promotes house sparrows and grackles to top-tier as well. A hull is a filter, and hearts have thrown it away. If a sparrow flock or a grackle wave is your active problem, hearts are the worst seed you can put out, and you want the opposite move: striped sunflower or safflower.
Running a hearts feeder without wasting money#
Five habits, and they are the difference between paying 44% more for a clean yard and paying much more than that for seed you throw away.
- Fill for two to three days. Estimate consumption over one week, then divide. If the feeder is never more than a third full, you have it about right.
- Empty before rain, not after. If a wet warm spell is forecast and the feeder is over half full, tip the seed back into the bin and put out a small amount instead.
- Buy medium chips for general use and fine chips only for finch feeders. Buying one grade for everything means one of the two feeders works badly.
- Use a mesh or domed feeder outdoors and save flat trays for the hour you are watching.
- Keep the bag sealed in a bin indoors. Hearts keep noticeably less well than seed in the shell, roughly three to four weeks in a warm garage against two to three months sealed and cool. The full table is in storing birdseed.
Done that way, hearts cost about 44% more than black oil per pound eaten, leave nothing on the ground, and feed a slightly wider list of birds. Done by filling a large tube to the brim in July, they cost more than nyjer and end up in the bin.

Are sunflower hearts worth the extra cost?
On a deck, patio or balcony, yes without argument, because the hull is the thing you are paying to avoid. Over a lawn or a bed it is a real decision. What is the difference between sunflower hearts and sunflower chips?
Size, and it is not a quality grade. Hearts are whole intact kernels. Medium chips are kernels broken into two to four pieces. Fine chips are small fragments with some powder. Whole hearts flow through any sunflower port and resist wet longest because there is less cut surface. Fine chips pour straight through a standard sunflower port and are best kept for slit-port finch feeders, where they are an excellent and cheaper alternative to nyjer.
Do sunflower hearts go bad quickly?
Outdoors, yes. The hull is a waterproof jacket, and without it moisture reaches the kernel immediately. In warm wet weather a feeder of hearts can go from good to sour in 24 to 48 hours: the seed darkens from cream to gray-brown, turns greasy, then mats into a plug that will not flow. In a sealed bin indoors hearts keep about as long as in-shell seed, roughly six weeks warm and a season cool, so the problem is the feeder, not the bag.
Do sunflower hearts attract more house sparrows?
Yes, and it is worth knowing before you switch. The hull is the only physical barrier a sunflower seed has, and removing it makes the seed easier for every bird, including house sparrows, grackles and starlings, which all rate hearts higher than they rate seed in the shell. If those birds are already your problem, hearts will make it worse. Striped sunflower or safflower go the other way.
Can I put sunflower hearts in a nyjer feeder?
Fine chips, yes, and it is one of the better value moves in bird feeding. Goldfinches, lesser goldfinches and pine siskins rate fine sunflower chips as highly as nyjer, and chips deliver roughly double the calories per dollar. Whole hearts will jam the narrow slits, so buy the fine grade specifically. Keep fills small: chips hold moisture in a slit-port tube even more readily than nyjer does.
Why is seed stuck in my hearts feeder?
Damp fines. Broken kernels shed a fine oily powder that absorbs water, swells and cements into the base of a tube. Once that plug forms the feeder looks full and delivers nothing. Empty the feeder completely, brush the tube out, wash and dry it fully, then refill with smaller amounts. If it keeps happening, move to whole hearts rather than chips, or fit a feeder with a removable base you can actually clean.
