Caged vs weight-activated feeders: reliability against species
One of these has no moving parts and throws away half your species list. The other keeps every bird and will eventually stop working.
The short answer
- Choose the cage if the birds you care about are chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, finches and downy woodpeckers. It has no moving parts and it cannot wear out.
- Choose the weight-activated feeder if you want cardinals, jays or grosbeaks, because a 1.5 in mesh excludes them exactly as thoroughly as it excludes squirrels.
- A cage is a permanent species filter; a weight gate is a temporary mechanism. You are choosing which of those two problems you would rather have.
- A weight gate closes on total load, not on individual birds, so a threshold set low enough to stop grackles will also close when several cardinals land at once.
- Neither design solves raccoons, and neither is worth buying if you have 8 ft of clear air for a baffled pole.
Take the cage if your feeder list is chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, finches and downy woodpeckers. It is the most reliable squirrel defense sold, it has nothing to wear out, and it throws in grackle and starling exclusion for free. Take the weight-activated feeder if cardinals, jays or grosbeaks are the birds you would miss, because a cage removes those as thoroughly as it removes squirrels, and no amount of good seed gets them back. You are not choosing between a better and a worse feeder. You are choosing between a permanent species filter and a mechanism with a service life.
What each one actually does#
A cage is a steel grid, usually 1.5 in mesh, standing about 4 in off the feeder body. It excludes by body size and nothing about it moves.
A weight gate is a metal shroud on a spring or counterweight. Load the perch ring past a set threshold and the shroud slides down over the ports. Remove the load and it lifts. It excludes by mass, and it is a machine sitting outdoors.

The cage's case: it cannot fail#
Reliability here is not a marketing claim, it is a consequence of geometry. There is no state in which a 1.5 in mesh stops being a 1.5 in mesh. It works at minus 10 °F, it works in freezing rain, it works in year eight, and it works when it is caked in sunflower dust.
Two dimensions decide whether a given cage is any good:
- Mesh at 1.5 in. At 2 in, young gray squirrels, red squirrels and chipmunks pass straight through and you have built them a private dining room.
- Standoff at 4 in or more. If the grid sits closer than that to the ports, a squirrel hangs on the outside and reaches in with a forelimb. A cage 2 in from the tube is decoration.
The bonus effect is the one worth buying it for. Common grackles at about 115 g and European starlings at about 82 g cannot pass a 1.5 in mesh, so a caged feeder solves grackles and blackbirds at the same time, permanently, with no setting to get wrong. That is a bigger win than most owners expect. What it does not solve is house sparrows, which weigh about 28 g and stroll through.
The weight gate's case: you keep the birds#
The shroud is the only mechanism that stops a 450 g squirrel while admitting a 120 g mourning dove, and that is the entire argument for it. A weight-gated feeder can hold your cardinals, jays, rose-breasted and evening grosbeaks, and doves. On a station where those are the show, nothing else does the job.
It also holds twice the seed, handles striped sunflower that a caged tube's ports may not, and gives large birds an actual perch instead of a wire barrier.
Set against that, five real failure modes:
- Gumming. Sunflower fines plus humidity make a paste on the guide rods. The shroud closes slowly, then stops returning fully, and eventually sits half shut with birds unable to feed.
- Ice. Freezing rain glazes the sleeve to the body. It freezes open, giving no protection, or shut, giving no feeding, and both happen in the same winter.
- Spring fatigue. Springs relax with cycles and cold. The drift is slow and silent.
- The load problem. The gate weighs whatever is on the ring, not the animal. A threshold set at squirrel weight, roughly 400 g, does nothing about a 115 g grackle. Dial it down to about 100 g to stop grackles and it will now close when three cardinals land together, or when a single jay does.
- Raccoons. Weight closes the ports; a raccoon lifts the lid. See raccoons, which is a latch problem, not a weight problem.
Deciding: one question, then two checks#
The question: name the bird you would be sorriest to lose. If it weighs more than about 40 g, the cage is out. Cardinal, jay, grosbeak, dove: weight gate. If it weighs less, the cage wins on every remaining criterion and costs less.
Then two checks before you pay:
- Check the climate. If you get freezing rain more than a couple of times a winter, discount the weight gate heavily. Ice is the failure it handles worst, and it fails in the week your birds most need the feeder.
- Check the materials. On a caged feeder, look at the plastic parts near the mesh: the lid and base are where squirrels brace and chew. On a weight gate, look for metal ports and a body you can strip without tools. Feeder materials covers what survives.
When neither is the purchase to make#
If you have 8 ft of clear air in every direction around a pole position, buy neither. A baffle at 4.5 ft on a smooth pole beats both mechanisms, works on raccoons as well as squirrels, costs a fraction as much, and lets you hang any feeder you like, including one with a cardinal-friendly tray. If your squirrels arrive from above, along a branch or a fence top, neither design is enough on its own and neither is the baffle. That is a placement problem, covered in stopping squirrels.

Frequently asked questions#
Do caged feeders keep out cardinals?
Yes, and that is the main reason people regret buying one. A 1.5 in mesh is sized to stop a gray squirrel, and a 45 g cardinal, an 85 g blue jay, a 60 g evening grosbeak and a 120 g mourning dove are all too large to pass through it. If your yard's headline bird is a cardinal, a cage is the wrong purchase no matter how well it works on squirrels. A weight-activated feeder or a baffled pole keeps them.
How long does a weight-activated feeder last?
The body lasts as long as any feeder; the mechanism does not. Three things degrade it: sunflower dust and damp gumming the guide rods, freezing rain glazing the sleeve open or shut, and spring fatigue that gradually raises the weight needed to close it. None of them announce themselves. A feeder that shut on a squirrel in its first winter may need a heavier animal by its fifth, and you will blame the squirrels rather than the spring.
Can I test whether my weight gate still works?
Yes, and it takes a minute. Hang a known weight from the perch ring: a full 14 oz can is about 400 g, which is at the light end of an adult gray squirrel. The shroud should close fully and smoothly, and reopen completely and immediately when you remove the weight. Slow, partial or sticky travel means the rods need cleaning and dry lubricant. Do this at the start of each autumn, before the season when it matters.
Does a cage stop house sparrows?
No. A house sparrow weighs about 28 g and passes through a 1.5 in mesh as easily as a chickadee does. Cages exclude by body size, and house sparrows are small. They do exclude grackles at 115 g and starlings at 82 g reliably, which is genuinely useful, but a sparrow colony is not solved by any feeder geometry. That is a seed and siting problem instead.
Which is better value over ten years?
The cage, in most yards, because the failure it does not have is the expensive one. A wire cage around a metal-ported tube has nothing to service and no part that ages. A weight-activated feeder costs more up front, and its mechanism is usually the part excluded by an animal damage clause in the warranty. The counter-argument is not financial: if the cage keeps out the birds you feed for, the cheap feeder is worthless.
