Bird feeder materials: what survives sun, teeth, ice and bleach
Six materials, four stresses that destroy feeders, and a service-life table that explains why two feeders on the same pole age at completely different rates.
The short answer
- Clear plastic is either polycarbonate or styrene, and the difference is most of the price gap. Polycarbonate flexes and survives cold; styrene is brittle, yellows fast and cracks near freezing.
- Only three materials shrug off a squirrel: steel, glass and copper. Every plastic and every softwood can be chewed given enough visits.
- Bleach soaking is the dividing line for cleaning. Polycarbonate, recycled poly lumber and glass take it; cedar, powder-coated steel and copper do not.
- Recycled poly lumber outlives everything else in the yard but moves with temperature, so its fixings need slotted holes rather than tight screws.
- Wood is the only material that absorbs what you put in it. Seed oil and suet fat soak into cedar and turn a feeder into something you cannot fully clean.
Two feeders can hang a foot apart on the same pole, get the same rain and the same squirrels, and one is finished in three years while the other is fine at fifteen. The difference is almost never the shape. It is what the thing is made of, and how that material handles four stresses: ultraviolet light, teeth, water that freezes, and the cleaning you have to do to it.
The four stresses, and what each one attacks#
Ultraviolet light breaks polymer chains at the surface. You see it as yellowing, a chalky bloom you can rub off on a finger, and fine crazing around stressed edges like port openings and screw bosses. It attacks clear plastics hardest, because they are transparent to the light that damages them.
Teeth. A gray squirrel's incisors will work through any plastic and any softwood, and the attack concentrates on edges it can get a purchase on: port rims, lid lips, corners. Nothing about the plastic's grade changes this much. Only metal and glass are outside the animal's reach.
Freeze-thaw. Water gets into a base, a seam or a reservoir, freezes, and expands by roughly nine percent. Anything rigid that surrounds it either flexes or splits. This is the single most common winter failure, and it kills glass and brittle plastic in the same night.
Cleaning. The routine is a wash then a ten-minute soak in one part household bleach to nine parts water, as set out in how to clean a bird feeder. A material that cannot take that soak cannot be sterilized, and that constraint should shape what you buy for anything holding fat, fruit or nectar. The reason it is not optional is disease transmission at feeders.
The six materials#
Polycarbonate. The good clear plastic. It flexes instead of shattering, stays impact-tough far below freezing, and when UV-stabilized it holds up for a decade in full sun before it hazes. It tolerates a bleach soak at feeder dilution. Its weak points are strong alkaline detergents and abrasives: scouring powder and repeated hot dishwasher cycles both craze the surface, and crazed polycarbonate becomes brittle polycarbonate.
Styrene. The cheap clear plastic, and the reason two visually identical tube feeders can differ threefold in price. It is rigid, glassy, and brittle from new. It yellows within two or three summers, crazes around ports, and at freezing temperatures a modest knock splits it. It is not a scandal, it is a two-to-four-season product, and it is fine on a sheltered balcony where nothing chews it and nothing hits it.
Powder-coated steel. Baked polyester powder over steel. Chew-proof, sun-proof, stiff, and the standard for cages, mesh peanut feeders and poles. Its single failure mode is a breach in the coating: a chip from a dropped feeder or a scratch from a wire brush lets water to the steel, and rust then spreads under the coating from that one point. Galvanised steel under the powder buys years. Touch up chips the week you notice them, as covered in feeder repair and maintenance.
Recycled poly lumber. High-density polyethylene, usually from recycled containers, molded into boards. It does not rot, does not absorb, is pigmented right through so it cannot fade to a different color underneath, and takes bleach without complaint. Two real drawbacks: it is soft enough for a squirrel to gnaw, though it rarely gets breached, and it moves considerably with temperature. A poly lumber panel screwed down tight in July will bow or crack its own screw hole in January, so fixings want slightly oversized or slotted holes.
Cedar. Naturally rot-resistant, pleasant, and the traditional hopper material. Left unfinished it silvers and lasts five to ten years. The catch is porosity. Cedar absorbs sunflower oil and rendered fat, holds moisture in its grain, and cannot be soaked in bleach without waterlogging and eventually splitting. Never seal the interior with a finish either, since you are then depending on a coating birds may peck. Wood is a structure and a roof material; it is a poor food-contact surface.
Glass. Chemically inert, unaffected by sunlight, unaffected by teeth, and the easiest thing in the yard to see through and clean. It is the right choice for nectar reservoirs, which is argued out in glass versus plastic hummingbird feeders. Two weaknesses: it breaks when dropped, and it has no give at all in a freeze, so a glass reservoir left full through a hard night can split.
Copper. Roofs, finials and trim. It never corrodes through in any timescale that matters, it dents rather than cracks, and the patina is the finished state rather than damage. It is heavy and expensive for the amount of function it provides, and it should not be bleached.

Materials are chosen by what the feeder holds, not just by the weather it sits in.

- Sunflower in shell leaves an oily film. On polycarbonate it wipes off. In cedar it soaks into the grain and eventually goes rancid, which is why an old wooden hopper can smell sour even after a scrub.
- Sunflower hearts produce fine oily dust that packs into corners and gums moving parts, so a weight-activated mechanism is a worse match for hearts than for whole seed.
- Suet is the strictest case. Fat penetrates wood and stays. Keep suet in coated wire, plastic-coated mesh or steel, all of which you can wash properly.
- Nectar is sugar water at feeder temperature, which means daily to twice-weekly cleaning in summer. Only glass and good plastic survive that frequency of scrubbing for years.
Materials against service life#
Working estimates rather than measurements, set for feeders in year-round outdoor use in a four-season climate. Sheltered sites and mild coastal winters push everything toward the top of each range, and how a feeder is treated matters more than the material in any single case.

Read it as a shopping rule rather than a ranking. A styrene tube on a covered porch is a sensible purchase. The same tube on an exposed pole with squirrels is money you will spend again next year, and the squirrel-proof feeder options are worth pricing against three replacements.
What to buy for your conditions#
- Squirrels present, open yard. Metal-and-glass or metal-and-polycarbonate bodies, steel ports, steel cage. Plastic lids and bases are the parts that get chewed, so prefer designs where those are metal too.
- Hard winters. Polycarbonate over styrene, no exceptions, and never leave water sitting in a base or reservoir overnight below freezing.
- Coastal or high-humidity. Recycled poly lumber and stainless fixings. Powder-coated steel still works, but every chip becomes rust much faster in salt air.
- Full sun on a south wall. Poly lumber, metal or glass. Clear plastics age fastest exactly where you can see them.
- Suet, fruit, mealworms and nectar. Choose only from the bleach-soak column, because these are the feeders that must be sterilized, not just rinsed.
Whatever the body is made of, the mounting is a separate materials decision, and steel wins there for reasons of stiffness rather than weather. Frequently asked questions#
How do I tell polycarbonate from styrene on a clear feeder?
Flex a corner or an edge with your thumb. Polycarbonate gives slightly and springs back; styrene is rigid and feels glassy, and if you push it hard enough it cracks rather than bends. Tap it too: styrene rings with a high, thin, glass-like note, while polycarbonate sounds duller. Age is the other clue. A styrene feeder two summers old is already faintly yellow with fine surface crazing around the port edges, where polycarbonate still looks new.
Can I put a bird feeder in the dishwasher?
Glass and stainless steel parts, yes. Polycarbonate, only on a lower-temperature cycle and only on the top rack, since repeated hot alkaline detergent cycles craze it and eventually make it cloudy and weak. Styrene will distort. Cedar and any painted or powder-coated steel should never go in: the wood swells and splits, and the coating lifts at the edges, which starts rust that spreads underneath. Hand washing plus a bleach soak is safer for almost everything.
Are wooden bird feeders a bad idea?
Not bad, but limited. Untreated cedar resists rot naturally and looks right in a garden, and for a dry-seed hopper it is perfectly serviceable for five to ten years. The limitation is porosity: wood absorbs seed oil, suet fat and moisture, so it cannot be soaked in bleach and cannot be fully sterilized. Use wood for structure and roofs, and keep the surfaces that touch food, especially anything that holds fat or fruit, in a material you can soak.
Why did my plastic feeder crack over winter?
Two mechanisms. If the crack radiates from a screw hole or a port corner, it is brittle failure: styrene loses what little toughness it has as the temperature drops, and a knock from a full seed scoop at 15 °F splits it. If the crack is a clean vertical line in the base or reservoir, it is freeze-thaw: water pooled inside, froze and expanded. Never leave a feeder base holding water in a freeze, and empty nectar reservoirs before a hard night.
Is a copper feeder worth it?
As a roof or trim, it lasts effectively forever and needs nothing done to it beyond letting the patina form. As a whole feeder it is expensive for the function and heavy on a hook. Copper is soft, so it dents rather than cracks, and it is the one material you should not bleach: household bleach corrodes it and strips the oxide layer you have been waiting on. Wash copper with soap and water and let it go green.
What material lasts longest in full sun?
Recycled poly lumber and metal. Poly lumber is pigmented all the way through, so it does not fade to a different color under the surface and it has no coating to fail. Powder-coated steel is close behind if the coating is undamaged. The materials that lose in sun are the clear plastics, because ultraviolet light attacks the polymer at the surface: styrene yellows and chalks within two or three summers, and even UV-stabilized polycarbonate slowly hazes over five to ten years.
