Poles, hooks and hangers: holding a feeder still and off the ground

Work out the real load first, because a 3 lb feeder can put 15 lb on the hook by February.

The short answer

  • Size the mount for winter, not for the feeder. A 3 lb seed load can reach 15 lb once the feeder body, wet snow and an ice glaze are added.
  • Stiffness rises roughly with the cube of tube diameter, so moving from a 3/4 in pole to a 1 in pole of the same wall is about two and a half times stiffer, not a third stiffer.
  • Shepherd hooks bend because they are a cantilever: the load acts a foot out from the upright, and a squirrel landing on it briefly doubles or triples that.
  • Frost heave lifts a smooth pole a little at every freeze cycle and never puts it back. Use a socket or a screw anchor and re-plumb in spring.
  • A branch line only works if the feeder hangs 7 to 10 ft from every launch point and the line itself is too slick and too narrow to walk.

Most feeder mounts are chosen against the weight printed on the feeder box. That number is the seed, and the seed is the smallest part of the load. Start with the real figure and every other decision on this page follows from it.

Read the capacity column in fluid ounces, then convert to what it actually weighs. Black oil sunflower has a bulk density near 0.36 g per ml, our working figure from standard test weights, so a 100 fl oz hopper holds about 2.5 lb of it. Sunflower hearts are denser and the same hopper takes closer to 4 lb.

That snow figure is our own calculation, not a quoted one: a 12 in square roof under 6 in of settled wet snow is about 0.014 cubic meters, and settled wet snow runs near 300 kg per cubic meter. Light dry powder is a third of that. Wet spring snow can be more.

The conclusion is blunt. A mount rated for 5 lb is not adequate for a 3 lb feeder in a snowy climate. Buy for four to six times the seed weight and nothing you own will bend.

Diameter, wall and wobble#

A pole that wobbles does two bad things: it spills seed, and it makes nervous birds leave. The number that governs wobble is bending stiffness, and for a thin-walled tube that scales roughly with the cube of the diameter multiplied by the wall thickness.

That relationship is not intuitive. Going from a 3/4 in pole to a 1 in pole of the same wall thickness is about 2.4 times stiffer, not 33 percent stiffer. Going from 3/4 in to 1.25 in is roughly 4.6 times. Adding wall thickness helps in proportion, so a heavy-wall 3/4 in tube can beat a flimsy 1 in one, but diameter is by far the stronger lever.

Practical guidance:

  • One light feeder, sheltered site: 3/4 in is fine.
  • Two feeders, or any exposed site: 1 in minimum.
  • A baffle plus two or three arms: 1.25 in or a heavy-wall 1 in, and expect the whole assembly to feel over-built. It should.

Wobble also comes from the joints. Sectional poles with a slip fit develop play at each joint, and three joints of small play add up to a visibly swaying top. A pole with fewer, longer sections and bolted or threaded joints stays steady for years longer. Coating matters too: powder-coated or galvanised steel resists the rust that starts at joints and fixings, covered in feeder materials.

Getting it into the ground#

Three methods, and they suit different soils.

Driven directly. A pointed pole or a two-prong stake hammered in. Fast, cheap, and fine in loam or clay to about 18 in. It fails in stony ground, where the point deflects and the pole ends up out of plumb, and in sand, where there is nothing to grip.

Ground socket. A separate sleeve driven or dug in, with the pole dropping into it. The best of the three for maintenance. You can lift the whole pole out to clean or to move it for mowing, and the socket is a simple item to re-drive if it works loose. Sockets with a flange or fins resist heave much better than a smooth tube.

Screw-in auger anchor. A helical blade turned into the soil. It resists upward pull, which is exactly what frost heave applies, and it is the strongest option in soft or wet ground. It takes real effort to install and it does not like rocky soil.

Frost heave, and why your pole leans by March#

Every freeze cycle, water in the soil expands and grips the pole. The soil lifts, the pole lifts with it, and when the soil thaws and settles the pole stays a little high and a little loose. Repeat that fifteen times over a winter and a pole that was rigid in November is leaning and wobbling in March.

What reduces it:

  1. Depth below the frost-affected layer where you can manage it, which is deeper than most people dig.
  2. A shape that resists upward pull, meaning an auger anchor or a socket with fins, rather than a smooth tube the soil can grip and lift.
  3. Drainage. A pole seated in a gravel-backfilled hole heaves less than one driven into dense clay that holds water against it.
  4. A spring reset in the routine. Lift, re-drive and re-plumb once a year while the ground is still soft. Ten minutes in April prevents the July repair.

Shepherd hooks, and why they bend#

A shepherd hook is a vertical rod with a curve at the top, and everything hangs a foot or more horizontally out from that rod. That offset is the problem. Load times offset is a bending moment, so 8 lb hanging on a 12 in arm applies about 96 in-lb at the top of the upright, and the same 8 lb hung directly on top of a straight pole applies none.

Add the winter load from the table above and you are at 15 lb on a 12 in arm, close to 180 in-lb, on a piece of rod that was cold-bent at the very point where the stress is highest. Then a squirrel jumps onto it, and for a fraction of a second the load is two to three times its weight.

Choosing one that survives:

  • Look at rod diameter first. Thin decorative hooks in the 3/8 in range are garden-light ornaments and will not hold a full seed feeder through a snowy winter.
  • Prefer a short arm. A 9 in offset carries a quarter less bending than a 12 in one for the same load.
  • Prefer a hook whose curve is reinforced, or one built from tube rather than solid thin rod.
  • Never hang two feeders from one hook arm.

A bent hook is also a squirrel problem, since it drops the feeder lower and closer to the upright, undoing the geometry that was keeping animals off. If the hook has sagged, that is often the whole explanation for the sudden squirrel visits described in stopping squirrels.

Multi-arm poles and crowding#

Mechanically, a 1 in pole holds four arms easily. The limit is biological.

Four feeders in a two-foot radius means every bird using the station shares the same patch of ground, the same hulls, the same droppings and the same perch surfaces. That is the mechanism behind most feeder-borne disease, which is why spacing is treated as a health measure in diseases at feeders.

Working rules:

  • Two seed feeders per pole is the sensible limit. Put suet, peanuts and nectar on separate arms or separate stations.
  • Space arms 18 to 24 in apart so feeders cannot swing into each other in wind. Colliding feeders spill seed and scare birds off.
  • If you have the room, two or three stations 15 to 20 ft apart beat one pole with four arms on every measure: less aggression, less disease pressure, more species feeding at once. Siting each of them is covered in where to put a bird feeder.

Hanging from a branch without feeding squirrels#

A branch above a feeder is the one launch point no baffle covers, because the animal drops onto the feeder from above. Hanging directly under a limb is close to a guaranteed loss.

The line method works. Run a horizontal line between two anchors, a tree and a post, or two posts, and hang the feeder at the middle. Then make the line unwalkable:

  • Use a slick, narrow line rather than rope. Fine cord or coated wire gives nothing to grip.
  • Thread a series of free-spinning sleeves onto the line, offcuts of narrow pipe or empty spools, so that anything trying to cross rolls off. Leave at least 4 to 5 ft of spinning sleeves on each side of the feeder.
  • Keep the whole feeder 7 to 10 ft from every trunk, fence, rail and roof edge, and 5 ft off the ground.
  • Add a dome baffle immediately above the feeder. It sheds rain, and it is your second line if something makes it along the line.

Deck rails, balconies and windows#

A deck rail mount puts a feeder ten feet from a chair, which is worth a great deal. It also puts it on a surface squirrels already patrol, and no clamp changes that.

Use rail mounts for the feeders where sharing matters least: nectar, a small mealworm dish, a suet cage. Feed sunflower hearts rather than in-shell seed, because hulls on decking are a weekly sweeping job and they stain. Keep the mount clear of where you walk, since the ground under any feeder needs raking.

On a balcony, the rail or the window is often the only option available, and the constraints are different enough to be worth their own treatment in balcony and apartment feeding. One rule carries over from everywhere else: a feeder should be under 3 ft from glass or more than 30 ft away, never in the 3 to 30 ft band where a startled bird has room to build up speed before it hits the window.

Frequently asked questions#

How deep should a bird feeder pole go into the ground?

At least a fifth to a quarter of the height standing above ground, so a pole showing 6 ft wants 18 to 24 in buried. Less than that and it will lean within a season, because the soil at the surface is the weakest part of the hole and the wind load acts at the top. In sand or soft peat go deeper still, or use a wide ground socket that spreads the side load over a larger area of soil rather than relying on depth alone.

Why does my shepherd hook keep bending?

It is a cantilever, so the load does not act on the upright, it acts a foot or so out from it. An 8 lb feeder on a 12 in arm applies about 96 in-lb of bending at the top bend. A squirrel jumping onto it adds a shock load of two to three times its weight for a moment. How do I stop my pole leaning after winter?

That is frost heave, and it is a ratchet: water freezes and grips the pole, the expanding soil lifts it slightly, then the soil settles back and the pole does not. A few cycles and it is loose and leaning. Use a screw-in auger anchor or a driven socket with a flange, both of which resist upward movement, and check plumb every spring before the ground dries. A pole set in a smooth sleeve with gravel drainage heaves far less than one driven straight into clay.

Can I hang a feeder from a tree branch?

Yes, but a branch gives a squirrel a launch point directly above the feeder, which is the one position a baffle cannot cover. Run a horizontal line between two points instead, hang the feeder in the middle, and keep it 7 to 10 ft from every trunk, fence and rail. Thread the line with spinning sleeves so nothing can walk it, use a slick narrow line rather than rope, and add a dome baffle above the feeder for rain and for anything that gets past.

How many feeders can I put on one pole?

Mechanically, four arms on a 1 in pole is fine. Biologically, two seed feeders is the sensible limit. Crowding concentrates birds, droppings and hulls into one small patch of ground, which raises disease risk and creates a mess you have to rake. Spread feeders across two or three stations 15 to 20 ft apart if you have room, and if you must run four arms on one pole, make them different food types so different species use each one.

Are deck rail mounts any good?

For close viewing, yes, and for keeping squirrels out, no. A deck rail is a continuous highway that a squirrel already patrols, and no clamp mount changes that. Use rail mounts for nectar feeders, a small mealworm dish or a suet cage you accept sharing, and use sunflower hearts rather than in-shell seed so hulls do not build up on the boards below. A proper baffled pole 10 ft out on the lawn is the alternative.
