14 Bird Feeding Myths, With Verdicts

Ten of these are simply wrong. Four are partly true, and the part that is true is the part worth knowing.

The short answer

  • Feeders do not make birds dependent, do not delay migration, and do not need to come down when you travel.
  • Red dye is unnecessary, not proven harmful. The honest reason to skip it is that it buys nothing: the feeder is already red.
  • Three of these claims are partly true: bread, rats and summer feeding all have a real version buried under an exaggerated one.
  • Cheap mixes are the clearest false economy in bird feeding. Filler is discarded, so you pay for weight that never gets eaten.

Most bird feeding folklore is harmless. Some of it costs money, and a little of it costs birds. Here are fourteen claims that circulate constantly, each with a verdict and the reasoning behind it. Where a claim is partly true, the page says so instead of flattening it, because the true half is usually the useful half.

Dependence, timing and travel#

Feeders make birds dependent#

Verdict: false. A feeder is one patch in a foraging range that covers many hectares, and birds work that whole range every day whether or not your tube is full. Chickadees in particular sample dozens of sites in a morning, take one seed at a time, and cache much of what they take. The behavior you interpret as reliance is the behavior of an animal checking a known productive spot, then leaving to check twelve others. Feeder seed is a fraction of a wild bird's daily intake even in hard winter weather, and birds whose feeders disappear simply spend more time at the other patches they were already visiting. Leaving hummingbird feeders up delays migration#

Verdict: false. Migration in hummingbirds is triggered by day length and hormonal state, not by whether food is available. A bird that is ready to go will go past a full feeder. What a late feeder actually does is give a straggler or a late-hatched juvenile a fuel stop when natural flowers are finished, which is the opposite of a problem. Keep nectar up for two weeks after your last sighting, and longer on the West Coast and in the Southeast where some individuals overwinter. Timing by region is on hummingbird feeder timing.

Birds starve if you go on holiday#

Verdict: false. This is the dependence myth wearing a hat. Nothing happens. Birds that used your feeder use the other food they were already using. The only real holiday risk runs the other way: a feeder left full for a fortnight in summer humidity grows mold, and a nectar feeder left in the sun ferments. Empty and clean both before you leave rather than topping them up.

You should stop feeding in spring so birds forage naturally#

Verdict: false. Birds forage naturally the whole time. More to the point, the leanest weeks of the year in much of North America are late winter and early spring, after the wild seed crop has been stripped and before insects emerge, so spring is one of the worst moments to remove a food source. Nesting birds switch to insects for their young regardless of what you provide, because nestlings need protein and moisture that seed cannot deliver. See spring bird feeding.

You must stop feeding in summer#

Verdict: partly true. The blanket rule is wrong, and the reasons behind it are not. Summer feeding is fine across most of the continent, and it is genuinely useful during molt in late summer. But three real conditions attach. Suet and nectar spoil fast in heat, so switch to no-melt suet and shorten your nectar change interval to two or three days. Humid weather turns seed moldy in the feeder, so fill smaller and clean more often. Food myths#

Nectar needs red dye#

Verdict: false. Dye adds nothing. Hummingbirds are drawn to red on the feeder itself, which is already colored, and to the location once they know it. The honest version of the argument is not that dye has been shown to poison birds, it is that nobody has established a safe dose for an animal that drinks several times its body weight in nectar per day, and there is no benefit to weigh against that unknown. Hummingbirds need a stronger mix in autumn#

Verdict: partly true, and the true part is small. The reasoning behind the claim is real: birds putting on migratory fat and birds facing cold nights need more energy. The problem is everything else. Stronger syrup is more viscous, it crystallises in the ports, it ferments faster, and it delivers less water to a bird that gets most of its water from nectar. Agency guidance is 4:1 year round and that is what this site follows. If you are worried about a cold snap, the useful intervention is keeping the feeder from freezing and keeping it clean, not thickening the syrup.

Bread is fine occasionally#

Verdict: partly true, and still not worth doing. A crumb of wholegrain bread will not kill an adult bird. The problems are cumulative rather than acute: bread is low in fat and protein, it fills a crop that could have held something useful, it molds within a day or two outdoors, and it is disastrous when adults carry it to nestlings that need insect protein. It also concentrates gulls, geese and rats in a way seed does not. If you want to use up stale bread, compost it. The full list of what does and does not belong is on what not to feed birds.

Rice kills birds#

Verdict: false. Uncooked rice does not swell inside a bird and rupture anything. Rice is a grass seed, birds eat grass seed, and enormous numbers of blackbirds, waterfowl and sparrows feed in rice fields every year without incident. The myth appears to have grown out of wedding-rice folklore rather than any observation. Rice is still a mediocre feeder food, low in fat and readily ignored, but it is not dangerous.

Peanut butter chokes birds#

Verdict: false. There is no documented mechanism for it. Birds do not swallow the way people do, and chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers work peanut butter off bark and out of holes with no difficulty. Mixing it with cornmeal is a long-standing habit that makes it easier to handle and stretches it further, not a safety measure. The genuine cautions are heat, since it goes soft and rancid quickly, and salt, since salted or sweetened spreads are not bird food.

Cheap mixes are good value#

Verdict: false, and it is the most expensive mistake on this list. A bargain mix is bulked out with milo, wheat and oat groats, which most feeder birds rake straight onto the ground to reach the sunflower underneath. You pay for the whole bag and feed part of it. Work it through with our benchmark prices: a $0.90 per pound mix that is 40% filler costs $1.50 per pound of food birds will actually eat, before you count the hull weight of the sunflower inside it. Straight black oil sunflower at $1.35 per pound with a 75% kernel yield works out at about $1.80 per pound of kernel, with the hull already subtracted. Count the hull inside the mix as well and the two are level, except that one of them leaves a mound of rejected grain on the ground feeding rodents and the other leaves hull.

The decision rule: buy single seeds and combine them yourself in separate feeders, or buy a mix whose ingredient list contains only sunflower, white proso millet and cracked corn in that order. See reading a mix label and which seed to buy.

Bodies, behavior and consequences#

Birds' feet freeze to metal perches in winter#

Verdict: false. This is a human analogy, the tongue on the frozen railing, applied to an animal built differently. A bird's foot is dry scaly skin with essentially no sweat glands, so there is no moisture to freeze. Legs and feet also run much cooler than the body core through a counter-current arrangement in the blood vessels, which is exactly why a duck can stand on ice. Metal perches are fine. Metal feeders are, if anything, the better buy, because a squirrel cannot chew them.

A mother bird will abandon a chick you touch#

Verdict: false. Parent birds are far more committed than that, and the smell-based version of the story does not hold for most songbirds anyway. A nestling that has fallen can be put back and the adults will carry on feeding it. Two real rules attach, though. A feathered fledgling hopping about on the ground with attentive parents is not in trouble and should be left alone. And native birds, nests and eggs are legally protected in the United States and Canada, so beyond returning a nestling to its nest, the correct move is to call a licensed rehabilitator rather than to intervene.

Feeding attracts rats automatically#

Verdict: partly true, and worth taking seriously. Feeders do not attract rodents. Spilled seed on the ground does, and so does a bag stored in a shed in something a rat can chew through. The distinction is practical: a hanging feeder over a clean surface, a tray to catch drops, no ground feeding after dusk and seed kept in metal bins is a station that does not feed rats. A hopper dripping onto long grass, refilled every day, is a station that does. If you already have rodents, the sequence for clearing them is on rats and mice.

How to test the next claim you hear#

Three questions handle most of them.

  1. Is there a mechanism, or only an analogy? Feet freezing to metal and rice swelling in stomachs are both analogies from human experience with no bird physiology behind them.
  2. Would the species have survived before feeders existed? If a claim implies that birds cannot manage without something invented in the last century, it is almost certainly wrong.
  3. Who says so? A wildlife agency, a university extension service or an ornithological organization is a different class of source from a caption. Our own reasoning is laid out on the methodology page so it can be checked the same way.

Frequently asked questions#

Why do so many of these myths survive?

Because most of them describe something plausible about how a bird might work, and nobody watching a feeder can see the counter-evidence. Dependence sounds obvious if you watch twenty chickadees at one tube and do not know that each of them visited a dozen other food sources that morning. A myth about an invisible process is very hard to kill by observation, which is why the answers here rest on how birds actually forage rather than on what a busy feeder looks like.

Is there any myth on this list you changed your mind about?

Summer feeding. The blanket advice to stop feeding in summer is wrong for most of North America, but the reasons behind it are not silly: nectar and suet do spoil dangerously fast in heat, seed does mold in humidity, and in bear country a feeder left out in July is a serious problem for the bear and eventually for you. The correct answer is conditional rather than a flat yes or no, which is why it sits under partly true.

How should I check a bird feeding claim I read somewhere else?

Ask three questions. Does the claim have a mechanism, or is it just an analogy from human bodies? Does it come from a wildlife agency, a university extension service or an ornithological organization, or from a caption? And does it survive the seasonal test, meaning would the birds have died out long before feeders existed if it were true? Most feeder myths fail the third question immediately.

Does believing a myth actually do any harm?

Some do nothing, some cost money and a few cost birds. Believing feeders delay migration leads people to take nectar feeders down in September, which removes a fuel stop from late migrants and the occasional bird that will overwinter. Believing cheap mixes are good value wastes roughly half of every bag. Believing red dye is required adds a needless additive. The dependence myth is the most harmless of the lot, since it only makes people anxious.
