Summer Bird Feeding: Smaller Portions, Twice the Cleaning

Yes, feed in summer. Change three things: portion size, fat format and how often you wash everything.

The short answer

  • Feed in summer if you want to, but cut fill levels to a quarter or a third so nothing sits longer than about five days in the heat.
  • Plain rendered suet softens and goes rancid above roughly 70 °F. Switch to a no-melt dough (fat cut with flour and cornmeal), which holds to about 90 °F, or take fat off the menu until autumn.
  • Cleaning frequency roughly doubles: seed feeders weekly and after every rain, nectar every 2 days at 80 to 90 °F and daily above 90 °F.
  • The July and August lull is natural abundance, not failure. Feeders go quiet because insects, seed heads and berries are everywhere at once.
  • In summer, water outdraws seed. A shallow, shaded, moving water source will bring in species that never touch a feeder, and it costs almost nothing to run.

The verdict first: keep feeding through the summer. There is no evidence that summer feeding makes birds dependent, keeps them from foraging or harms nestlings, provided the food is fresh and the format is right. The birds that visit in July are the same residents you had in February, plus their fledglings.

What summer changes is the maintenance, and it changes it enough that a routine that worked in January becomes unsafe by June.

The portion arithmetic#

Here is the rule we use, and it is worth doing once with your own feeder.

Work out roughly how fast your feeder empties in summer. If a 2.5 lb tube took three days to empty in February and now takes three weeks, it is holding seed seven times too long. Fill it to one third, and it turns over in a week. Fill it to one quarter and it turns over in about five days, which is the target in humid heat.

That single change fixes most summer feeding problems before they start. Seed that is eaten within five days never gets the chance to grow anything. Seed that sits for a month in July does, and the first sign is usually a dark, slightly sticky layer at the base of the tube. What that becomes is on moldy seed.

The same logic applies to the bag in your garage. Heat and humidity age seed fast, and warm storage is where meal moth infestations start. Buy smaller quantities in summer and keep them cool and sealed: see storing birdseed.

Fat in the heat#

Plain rendered suet is a winter food that behaves badly above about 70 °F. It softens, drips, and coats the feathers of birds that press against it, which matters most around the face and breast where a bird cannot easily preen it out. It also goes rancid within days at those temperatures.

Two workable answers:

  • No-melt dough. Fat cut with flour, cornmeal and sometimes peanut butter, formed into a cake that holds shape through heat. It is still a warm-weather food, so hang it in full shade and replace anything older than a week. Recipes and ratios are on homemade suet recipes.
  • Nothing. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, wrens and chickadees are surrounded by insects in July. Skipping fat from June to September costs you very little and removes a whole category of summer mess. The energy case for suet is a cold weather case.

Spoilage, by temperature#

The reason summer cleaning is different is that spoilage is temperature-driven, and it accelerates sharply over the range that matters.

These are working intervals rather than measured shelf lives, and shade and humidity move them:

Cloudy nectar, a sour smell, black specks in the reservoir or fizzing when you open it all mean the same thing: dump it, wash the feeder in hot water with a bottle brush, rinse thoroughly and start again. The lull, and why an empty feeder is good news#

Late June through August is the quietest stretch of the feeder year, everywhere. Four things stack up: insect abundance peaks, seed heads and berries ripen, adults are hunting invertebrates rather than cracking seed, and molt keeps birds hidden and quiet.

The trap is responding to it. People add more feeders, buy more expensive seed, or move things around, which resets the birds' habits without addressing anything. The right response is the opposite: put out less, keep it cleaner, and wait. Traffic comes back in September on its own, and the fledglings raised in your yard often come back with it.

The one summer visit worth watching for is a parent arriving with a fledgling in tow, begging loudly with fluttering wings while the adult cracks seed and passes it over. That is the best evidence you will get that your yard is working. What adults are doing the rest of the time is covered on feeding during nesting season.

Water is the summer feeder#

If you only do one thing between June and August, provide water. In a dry spell, natural water disappears faster than natural food, and a reliable shallow source brings in warblers, vireos, thrushes and tanagers that will never look at a seed feeder.

What works:

  • Shallow. 1 to 2 in at the deepest, with a rough surface or gravel for grip.
  • Moving. A dripper, a mister or a small solar pump multiplies the draw, because moving water is visible and audible from a distance. Standing water in shade does most of the job; moving water does the rest.
  • Shaded and clean. Rinse and refill daily. That single habit eliminates both the mosquito problem and most of the disease risk.
  • Sited like a feeder. Cover 10 to 12 ft away for escape, but not directly overhanging, and well out of ambush range for cats.

Bears and wasps#

Bears. In bear country the feeder comes down, and no adjustment substitutes for that. Many state and provincial wildlife agencies advise removing feeders from roughly 1 April to 1 December, with local dates varying. A bear that gets food at a house comes back, then visits neighbors, then becomes a public safety problem, and the outcome for the bear is usually fatal. Bringing feeders in at night is not sufficient, and cleaning up spilled seed matters as much as removing the feeder. Read bears at feeders before you decide your yard is an exception.

Wasps and bees. Sugar water attracts them, and in August a nectar feeder can be unusable. The fixes that work are structural, not chemical:

  • Use a saucer-style nectar feeder, where the liquid sits below the ports and out of reach of insect tongues while hummingbirds can still reach it.
  • Fit bee guards, and avoid feeders with yellow flower parts, which attract wasps more strongly than red does.
  • Wipe every drip off the outside after filling. Most wasp problems start with spilled nectar, not with the ports.
  • Move the feeder 10 to 20 ft. Wasps navigate to a fixed location and often fail to relocate it; hummingbirds relocate it in minutes.
  • Never smear oil, grease or insecticide near ports. It gets onto feathers and it is far worse than the wasps.

Coming out the other side#

From late August, southbound hummingbirds start moving through and your quietest month gives way to the autumn build-up. That is the point to plan the pre-winter clean and think about when suet goes back up, both of which are on fall bird feeding.

Frequently asked questions#

Should you feed birds in summer?

Yes, with changes. Feeding in summer does not make birds lazy or stop them foraging, and it does not harm nestlings as long as you avoid whole peanuts and large hard chunks that a parent could carry to a nest. What genuinely changes is spoilage: heat and humidity turn seed, suet and nectar bad in days rather than weeks. Feed smaller amounts, switch to no-melt fat, and double the cleaning. If you cannot keep up with the cleaning, stop feeding rather than feed dirty.

Why has my bird feeder gone quiet in July?

Natural food peaked. Insects are abundant, seed heads are ripening and berries are coming in, so a feeder is now one option among hundreds instead of the reliable source it was in February. Adults are also busy hunting insects for chicks, and molt keeps birds quiet and in cover from midsummer. A feeder that emptied in three days in winter can sit for two weeks in August with nothing wrong. Reduce the fill, keep it fresh, and traffic returns in September.

What do I do about suet melting?

Stop offering plain rendered suet once daytime highs pass about 70 °F. Melting fat drips onto feathers, which can matter around the face and breast, and warm fat goes rancid quickly. The replacements are no-melt dough cakes, which cut fat with flour and cornmeal so they hold shape in heat, or simply doing without fat until September. If you use no-melt in summer, still site it in full shade and replace anything that has been out more than a week.

How often should I clean feeders in summer?

Seed feeders weekly, and again after heavy rain. Nectar feeders every 4 to 5 days below 70 °F, every 3 days at 70 to 79 °F, every 2 days at 80 to 90 °F and daily above 90 °F. Fruit and jelly go over in a day or two in real heat and should be pulled the moment they ferment or grow mold. Water containers get rinsed daily. The reason for all of this is that warm, damp, bird-visited surfaces grow the organisms that cause feeder disease outbreaks.

Should I take feeders down because of bears?

In bear country, yes, and it is not optional advice. Many state and provincial wildlife agencies advise no feeders from roughly 1 April to 1 December, because a bear that finds food at a house returns and eventually becomes a bear that has to be destroyed. Bringing feeders in at night is not enough, as bears feed by day too. Follow your own wildlife agency's dates rather than a general rule, and clean up spilled seed as well as removing the feeder.

Do birds need water more than food in summer?

Water is the higher-value offering in hot weather. Birds need it for drinking and for feather maintenance, natural sources shrink in a dry spell, and many species that ignore seed entirely will use a bath. A shallow dish with moving water, from a dripper or a small solar pump, pulls in more species per dollar than any seed you can buy in July, provided you rinse and refill it daily so it does not become a mosquito nursery or a disease point.
