Glass vs plastic hummingbird feeders: five years of ownership

The money is close to a tie. What separates them is whether you can still see the mold you are inspecting for in year three.

The short answer

  • Buy glass if you intend to keep the feeder more than about three seasons. Plastic hazes and scratches under UV, and a hazed reservoir hides the black speckling you are checking for.
  • Buy plastic where nectar freezes overnight, where the hook is high or flimsy, or where the feeder will eventually be dropped on something hard.
  • Over five years the two work out close to level: glass costs more once, plastic costs less two or three times.
  • Both types almost always have a plastic base, and the base holds the ports, the gasket and the threads, so material choice never removes the part that actually fails.
  • Neither material changes the cleaning schedule: above 90 °F nectar needs replacing daily whatever the feeder is made of.

Buy glass if you expect to own the feeder for more than about three seasons and your winters do not freeze the nectar solid. Buy plastic if the feeder will hang above a patio, sit on a high or flimsy hook, or stay out through frost for Anna's hummingbirds on the Pacific coast. The five-year cost is close to level either way, so this decision is not about money. It is about whether, in year three, you can still see through the thing you are supposed to be inspecting.

Where the two materials genuinely differ#

Most of the differences between hummingbird feeders are about shape rather than substance, and those belong in saucer versus inverted. Material affects six things, and only six.

The row that decides most cases is the first one combined with the second. A hazed, scratched reservoir does not just look tired. It conceals the black speckling that tells you mold has taken hold, which means you are no longer running an inspection, you are running a hope.

Five years of ownership, costed#

Working figures, generic designs only, no specific products, and rounded because local prices differ. Assume one feeder kept in service through a normal season.

That is a tie, within the width of the ranges. Nectar itself is the cheapest food on the site by a distance, four parts water to one part white sugar, so the reservoir dominates the cost and the reservoir costs about the same either way. Anyone telling you glass is the expensive option is comparing one purchase against one purchase rather than five years against five years.

Where glass earns the difference#

You can verify it is clean. This is the whole case. Hold a glass reservoir up to the light after a wash and you can see whether it is actually clean. You cannot do that with a scratched bottle.

It survives the cleaning routine. The standard weekly strip-down is a bottle brush followed by a dilute bleach soak, set out in cleaning a feeder. Glass takes that treatment for a decade. Plastic ages visibly under it.

Full sun does not degrade it. Hummingbird feeders hang in the open by design, since the birds find them by sight. That is the harshest UV position in the yard, and it is exactly where plastic gives up soonest.

Heat stability. In a Southwest summer, the part of a plastic feeder that deforms first is the threaded neck. Once it warps, the feeder drips, dripping feeds ants and wasps, and no amount of cleaning fixes it.

Where plastic is the better buy#

Freezing nectar. Sugar water expands as it freezes, and a rigid reservoir has nowhere to put that expansion. On the Pacific coast, in the Southwest and anywhere else people keep a feeder up through frost, plastic is the sensible material. The alternative is a glass feeder brought in at dusk and rehung at first light, which is a real routine some people run and most abandon by January. Timing by region is in hummingbird feeder timing.

Height and hooks. A full glass feeder is a surprising weight on a shepherd's hook, a suction mount or a slim balcony bracket. Plastic hangs from anything.

Hard surfaces below. Feeders get dropped, usually at 6am with cold hands and a full reservoir. Over decking or grass that is an inconvenience; over paving with a glass feeder it is a dustpan and a cut hand.

Multiple feeders on a budget. Territorial behavior means three small feeders out of sight of one another usually feed more birds than one big one. Three plastic feeders cost less than one good glass feeder, and for a first season that is the better spend.

The rule, applied in the shop#

  1. Will nectar freeze in it? Yes, take plastic. This overrides everything else.
  2. How long do you plan to keep it? Under two seasons, plastic. Over three, glass.
  3. What is under the hook? Paving, glass balcony, or anywhere a child or dog passes: plastic.
  4. Can the base be fully dismantled? If not, put it back regardless of what it is made of. This test rejects more feeders than the other three combined.

When the material is not your problem#

If the nectar is going cloudy in two days and you are blaming the feeder, the feeder is innocent. That is temperature. Above 90 °F sugar water needs replacing every day and no material slows fermentation down. Match the fill volume to the schedule instead: work out how much your birds actually drink with the nectar calculator and fill a quarter of the reservoir rather than all of it.

If one bird is chasing every other bird away, material is irrelevant and so is capacity. Add a second feeder around a corner where the dominant ruby-throated hummingbird cannot see both at once.

And if you are still buying commercial nectar concentrate, the reservoir is the wrong place to spend the money. Frequently asked questions#

Is a glass hummingbird feeder better than plastic?

For most people who feed hummingbirds year after year, yes, and the reason is visibility rather than durability. UV hazes and scratches a plastic reservoir within two or three seasons, and once it is cloudy you can no longer see the black specks of mold that tell you the feeder needs stripping down. Glass stays clear indefinitely and tolerates repeated bleach soaks. Plastic wins where the feeder freezes, hangs high or gets dropped.

Do glass hummingbird feeders crack in the cold?

They can, and not from the air temperature. Water expands as it freezes, so nectar left in a glass reservoir through a hard freeze puts pressure on a rigid container. Plastic flexes and usually survives the same night. This matters mainly on the Pacific coast and in the Southwest, where Anna's hummingbirds overwinter and feeders stay up through frost. If you feed through freezing weather, either run plastic or bring the feeder in overnight.

How often does a hummingbird feeder need cleaning?

By temperature, not by calendar. The interval runs from daily in real heat to roughly weekly in cool weather, and the band-by-band table is on the nectar recipe page. Rinse at each change and do a full strip-down with a bottle brush weekly. Sugar water in warm weather ferments and grows mold quickly, and a cloudy or stringy solution has already gone. The material of the reservoir does not change any of this.

Does plastic hold smells or stains?

Yes, over time. Repeated bleach soaking makes plastic chalky and slightly porous, and the microscopic scratches left by bottle brushes hold biofilm that rinsing does not shift. This is the practical reason experienced feeders drift to glass: not that plastic is dirty, but that a scratched plastic surface is harder to verify as clean. If you use plastic, favor a dilute vinegar soak for routine cleaning and keep bleach for occasional deep cleans.

Are red glass feeders better at attracting hummingbirds?

Red on the feeder itself helps, in either material. Red dye in the nectar does not, and should never be used: plain 4:1 sugar water is what the birds need. What matters more than color is position and number. Hummingbirds are territorial, so one dominant bird will defend a single feeder against all comers, and two small feeders out of sight of each other will usually be busier than one large one.
