Homemade vs store-bought hummingbird nectar
Make it. The recipe is two ingredients, it takes three minutes, and it costs about one seventh of the bottled version.
The short answer
- Homemade wins. Four parts water to one part plain white sugar costs about 1.1 cents per fluid ounce of finished nectar, against roughly 3 cents for powdered concentrate and 6 to 9 cents for ready-to-use liquid.
- Over a two-feeder season that is a difference of around $50, for a product that is the same sugar solution with packaging and additives attached.
- No commercial additive removes the need to change the nectar on schedule, because what spoils first is the film growing on the feeder, not the sugar in the jar.
- Buy dye-free whatever you do. Hummingbirds find feeders by the red on the feeder itself, so coloring the liquid has no benefit to weigh against any uncertainty.
- Store-bought earns its place in exactly one situation: when you have no kitchen, no scale and no measuring cup, which usually means travel, a cabin or a hospital-window setup.
Make it yourself. Homemade 4:1 sugar water is the same molecule the commercial products are built on, it costs roughly one seventh of ready-to-use liquid, and it takes under three minutes. The commercial mixes win in one situation only, which is when you have no kitchen: a rented cabin, a hotel balcony, a hospital window, a trip where a small packet of powder is easier to carry than a bag of sugar and a measuring cup. That is a real case. It is also the only one.
Cost per fluid ounce, worked through#
One cup of plain white granulated sugar weighs about 200 g, or 0.44 lb. At bulk sugar prices that is around 40 cents. Dissolved in four cups of water it yields about 36 fl oz of finished nectar, because the dissolved sugar adds volume of its own.
40 cents divided by 36 fl oz is 1.1 cents per fluid ounce. In weight terms that is about 16 cents per pound of nectar, which matches the figure we use across the site.
Now run a normal season against it. Say two feeders holding 8 fl oz each, changed on average every three days across a 150-day season. That is 50 changes at 16 fl oz, or 800 fl oz of nectar for the year.

Those category figures are our working numbers for the shelf, not a quote for any one product, and the ratio is the part that matters. Powder is roughly three times the cost of making it. Ready-to-use liquid is six to eight times, and most of what you are buying and carrying home is water.

What homemade wins#
Price, obviously, but also control. You know exactly what is in the feeder because you put both ingredients in. There is no ingredient list to interpret and no version of the product that quietly contains dye.
The ratio is checkable. Four parts water to one part sugar by volume, about 17 to 18% sugar by weight, which sits in the range of the flower nectars hummingbirds feed on. The one way people get this wrong at home is measuring the water last: pour sugar into a jug and fill to a line and you have made a weaker mix than you think. Measure the water first, then add the sugar. The nectar calculator does the sizing if you want a batch that exactly fills your feeders.
Batch size flexibility. You can make 9 fl oz for a single small saucer or 72 fl oz for four feeders in September. Commercial units come in the sizes they come in, which tends to push people toward filling a large feeder rather than making the right amount. That matters, because a part-filled feeder changed on time beats a full one changed late.
No additive doing nothing. Nectar is fuel. Hummingbirds take protein, fat and micronutrients from insects and spiders, not from a feeder, so vitamin blends and electrolytes are solving a problem that does not exist. See bird feeding myths for the rest of that family of claims.
The narrow case for a commercial mix#
No kitchen. A packet of powder weighs almost nothing, needs no measuring cup and travels. If you are hanging a feeder at a rental, a cabin or a window where you have a kettle and nothing else, buy the dye-free powder and stop worrying about it.
Physical limits. Handling a hot pan, lifting a bag of sugar or measuring accurately is not trivial for everyone. Ready-to-use liquid poured straight into a saucer feeder is a legitimate answer, and a fed hummingbird does not care which bottle it came from.
A back-up jug. Some people keep one bottle for the evening they run out of sugar. That is fine. It just should not be the default.
How to decide in ten seconds#
Ask one question: do you have white sugar and a measuring cup within reach of the feeder?
- Yes. Make it. The recipe is one cup of sugar in four cups of water, and there is no step you can improve on.
- No, and you cannot get them there. Buy dye-free, prefer powder over ready-to-use, and change it on exactly the same schedule you would use for homemade.
There is no third answer. Cost, control and simplicity all point the same way, which is unusual enough in bird feeding to be worth saying plainly.
When the nectar is not the problem#
Most hummingbird feeder trouble happens after the mixing, and swapping brands will not touch it.
If the nectar is going cloudy fast, the issue is temperature and schedule, and the nectar recipe page sets the interval band by band. A preservative does not move those numbers, because the yeast is on the feeder as much as in the liquid. The cleaning routine matters more than the recipe.
If nothing is visiting at all, check the calendar before the contents. When to hang and take down a feeder shifts by a month or more between the Gulf coast and the northern plains, and a Ruby-throated Hummingbird that has not arrived yet is not rejecting your sugar.
And if the birds you actually want are orioles, nectar is only half the answer. They take fruit and jelly as readily as sugar water, from a feeder with larger ports.
Frequently asked questions#
Is store-bought hummingbird food bad for birds?
Dye-free commercial nectar is sugar water, and sugar water is what hummingbirds want. The objection is not that it is dangerous, it is that you are paying six to eight times as much for something you can make in three minutes from one ingredient. Red-dyed products are the ones to avoid, because the dye does nothing useful: hummingbirds locate feeders by the red plastic on the feeder, not by the color of the liquid. When the benefit is zero, there is no reason to accept any uncertainty at all.
How much does homemade hummingbird nectar cost?
About 1.1 cents per fluid ounce. One cup of plain white sugar weighs roughly 200 g, or 0.44 lb, which at bulk sugar prices is around 40 cents. Dissolved in four cups of water it yields about 36 fl oz of finished nectar. That works out to roughly 16 cents per pound of nectar. Do commercial nectars have preservatives, and do they help?
Some do, and they are usually sold on the promise that the nectar lasts longer in the feeder. Be skeptical of that framing. The sugar solution is not the only thing that spoils: yeasts and bacteria colonize the ports, the reservoir walls and the gasket, and a preservative in the liquid does not sterilize the feeder it is poured into. Change the nectar on a temperature schedule and wash the feeder regardless of what is in the bottle. If a product's main selling point is skipping that, it is selling you the wrong thing.
Does homemade nectar need vitamins or electrolytes added?
No. Nectar is a fuel source and nothing more. Hummingbirds get their protein, fat and micronutrients from insects and spiders, which make up a large part of their diet and all of a nestling's. A feeder supplies calories so the bird can spend its time hunting, defending territory and migrating. Anything added to the sugar water is solving a problem the bird does not have, and it gives yeast something extra to work with.
Is boiling worth it if I make my own?
It is optional. Boiling dissolves the sugar fast and kills organisms in the water and sugar, which buys a made batch slightly more life in the fridge. It does not sterilize the feeder, and boiled nectar in a feeder ferments on the same schedule as unboiled. Hot tap water and a good stir is enough for most people. Put the saved effort into changing the nectar on time and washing the feeder properly, because that is where the actual risk lives.
What if I only have brown sugar or honey?
Then do not fill the feeder today. Honey carries wild yeasts and spores and cultures mold quickly once diluted. Brown, raw and turbinado sugars carry iron and other minerals that white sugar does not, and molasses is worse still. Artificial sweeteners have no calories, which for a bird burning fuel at a hummingbird's rate is not a neutral substitution. Plain white granulated cane or beet sugar is the only correct ingredient, and it is the cheapest one.
