Hummingbird feeders: pressure, ports and the cleaning test that decides everything

Two designs, one physics problem, and a maintenance job you commit to every few days from April to October.

The short answer

  • Saucer feeders hold nectar below the ports, so they cannot drip, which removes most ant and wasp trouble at the source. Inverted bottles hold nectar above the ports and push it out when the trapped air warms up.
  • Buy on how far the feeder comes apart, not on how it looks. If the base does not separate into pieces you can reach with a brush, you will not keep it clean, and dirty nectar feeders make birds ill.
  • Perches are good. A perched hummingbird feeds longer and burns less energy, and it will still chase every rival it can see.
  • One dominant male defends what he can see. Two feeders 15 ft apart with a visual break between them will usually feed twice as many birds as one big feeder.
  • Fill with 4 parts water to 1 part plain white sugar, no dye, and fill only as much as you will change on schedule.

A nectar feeder is a sugar-water reservoir with holes in it, and every design decision follows from one question: is the nectar above the holes or below them? Get that straight and the rest of the choice, glass or plastic, three ports or eight, perch or no perch, becomes easy.

Above the ports or below them#

An inverted-bottle feeder is a sealed container turned upside down over a base. Nectar cannot run out freely because air cannot get in freely: the liquid holds a partial vacuum above it and the system sits in equilibrium at the port openings. It is the same trick as a water cooler.

That equilibrium is fragile in exactly one direction, and it is the direction your yard supplies every afternoon. Sun warms the air trapped at the top of the bottle, the air expands, and the only way it can expand is by pushing nectar out through the ports. The numbers are unforgiving: warm that trapped air from 68 °F to 104 °F and it grows by about 7 percent. A feeder sitting with 3 fl oz of air space above the nectar drips roughly 0.2 fl oz onto the ground, and it does it again the next day, and the next.

A saucer feeder holds nectar in a shallow dish with a lid clipped over it. The ports are in the lid, the nectar is below them, and there is no pressure anywhere in the system. It cannot drip, because there is nothing pushing.

The saucer's cost is reach. A hummingbird's tongue extends well past the tip of its bill, but not infinitely, and a wide saucer running low leaves nectar the birds cannot get at. Keep a saucer topped up rather than letting it drain, and prefer designs where the dish is narrow and deep under each port rather than broad and flat. Glass or plastic#

This is a smaller decision than the internet suggests, and it turns mostly on how long you want to own the thing.

The practical argument for glass is that a scratched plastic reservoir hides the exact thing you are inspecting for. Black speckling in a hazed plastic bottle is invisible until it is bad. The practical argument for plastic is that it survives being dropped on a patio at 6am, which glass does not. Ports, bee guards and perches#

Port design does more than let nectar out. It decides which insects can reach the sugar.

A honey bee's tongue is short, on the order of a quarter inch. A hummingbird's is not. So any feeder that puts the nectar surface more than about a quarter inch below the port opening feeds hummingbirds and starves bees, without a single moving part. Saucer feeders do this by default, which is why they have a reputation for being wasp-proof that has nothing to do with the plastic cage sold as a bee guard.

Those cages, the little yellow flowers with a grid over the hole, work by the same principle when they are intact. They fail in two ways: the grid cracks and falls out, and nectar wicks up into the guard and sits on top of it, which is an open feeding station for wasps. If your bee guards are wet on the outside, the feeder is overfilled or leaking. Fix that first, then read bees and wasps at feeders.

Perches are the other port-side decision, and the received wisdom is backwards. Hovering costs a hummingbird energy continuously; sitting costs almost nothing. A perched bird drinks longer, takes on more fuel per trip, and is far easier for you to watch. It does not become lazy, it does not stop hovering elsewhere, and it does not stop defending the feeder. A perch ring also lets bigger nectar drinkers use the feeder, which some people want and some do not. The "perches make them lazy" line is folklore, and it costs the birds fuel.

Buy it on disassembly, not on looks#

Here is the single test that should decide your purchase. In the shop, or in the photographs, take the feeder apart as far as it will go. Then ask whether a bottle brush can touch every internal surface, including the underside of the lid, the inside of each port collar, and the channel the nectar sits in.

Sealed bases, glued port collars and decorative cages that trap the base are all disqualifying. Nectar is a warm sugar solution sitting outdoors, which is a growth medium, and a feeder you cannot scrub is a feeder that grows black mold in the one place your eye never reaches.

The routine itself is quick. Empty the old nectar, rinse in hot water, brush every part including the ports, and refill. Once a week, soak the parts for ten minutes in one part household bleach to nine parts water, or in one part white vinegar to four parts water, then rinse thoroughly and let everything dry before it goes back up. Territory: why one big feeder is the wrong shape#

Hummingbirds are not flock birds. Male Ruby-throated and Anna's Hummingbirds hold feeding territories and will spend the day chasing rivals off a food source they can see from a perch. One feeder in the open is therefore one bird's property, and the other five in your yard are losing the argument somewhere out of sight.

The fix costs nothing extra because you split the same nectar:

  1. Use two or three small feeders instead of one large one.
  2. Put at least 15 ft between them.
  3. Break the line of sight. Around a house corner, on opposite sides of a shrub, one on the deck and one at the far fence.
  4. If the dominant bird still holds all of them, add a fourth in a spot he cannot see, and expect the effect within a day or two.

A bird cannot defend what it cannot see, and once defense becomes impossible the dominant male usually gives up and simply feeds.

What goes in it#

Four parts water to one part plain white granulated sugar, by volume. That is one cup of sugar to four cups of water. Heat the water enough to dissolve the sugar if you like, cool it, and store the surplus in the fridge for up to a week. Nothing else belongs in the mixture: no dye, no honey, no brown sugar, no molasses, no artificial sweetener.

When to put it up and when to take it down#

Put feeders up about two weeks before hummingbirds are expected in your area, which for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds means March in the Gulf states and late April or early May in the northern tier. Leave them up two to three weeks after you see your last bird: migrants passing through in September and October need fuel, and a feeder does not stop anything from migrating. Frequently asked questions#

Is a saucer or a bottle hummingbird feeder better?

A saucer for most people. Nectar sits below the ports in a saucer, so there is no head pressure and nothing drips, which starves ants and wasps of the sticky trail that draws them in. Saucers also come apart into two or three pieces you can wash in seconds. Inverted bottles hold more, show the nectar level clearly, and suit a yard with heavy traffic where the reservoir actually empties. They drip when the sun warms the trapped air at the top, and they take longer to clean.

Do perches stop hummingbirds hovering?

No, and the idea that perches make hummingbirds lazy is folklore. Hovering is expensive, so a bird that can sit while it drinks takes on more fuel per visit and spends less of it feeding. Perched birds are also far easier to watch and photograph. What perches do change is who else can use the feeder: orioles, finches and woodpeckers will sit on a substantial perch ring and drink, which is usually a bonus rather than a problem.

How often do I need to change hummingbird nectar?

By temperature, not by calendar. The schedule is daily at 90 °F and above, every two days from 80 °F to 89 °F, every three days from 70 °F to 79 °F, and every four to five days below 70 °F. Change it early if the nectar goes cloudy, if you see strings or specks in it, or if black spots appear around the ports. Cloudiness means the sugar has already started fermenting, and a bird does not need to drink much of that to get sick.

Why is my hummingbird feeder leaking?

Almost always an inverted bottle in the sun. The air trapped above the nectar expands as it warms, and because the only escape route is the ports, it pushes nectar out of them. Warming that air pocket from 68 °F to 104 °F expands it by about 7 percent, so a feeder with 3 fl oz of air space pushes roughly 0.2 fl oz of nectar onto the ground. Move the feeder into afternoon shade, fill it fuller so there is less air, or switch to a saucer.

How many hummingbird feeders should I put up?

More than one, and out of sight of each other. A dominant male will defend every feeder he can see from his perch, so a single feeder often feeds one bird and frustrates five. Split the same volume of nectar across two or three small feeders, place them at least 15 ft apart, and put a corner, a shrub or the house between them. Splitting one feeder into two is the change most likely to raise the number of hummingbirds you actually see and no extra nectar.

Can I use red dye or store-bought red nectar?

No dye. There is no nutritional case for it and no need for it: the feeder itself supplies the red. Plain white table sugar dissolved 4:1 in water is what you want, with no honey, no brown sugar, no raw or organic sugar and no artificial sweetener. Honey ferments quickly and can grow fungus, and sweeteners with no sugar in them provide no calories at all to a bird that needs them constantly.
