Peanut feeders: mesh size, peanut quality and the squirrel problem you cannot design away
A wire tube that turns a two-second mouthful into a two-minute job, which is exactly the point.
The short answer
- Mesh gauge is the design. About 1/2 in wire grid holds shelled peanut halves; 3/4 in to 1 in holds whole in-shell peanuts; 1/4 in suits peanut splits and hearts and slows everything down.
- Mesh works by making birds chip at a peanut instead of carrying it off, which is what stops two Blue Jays emptying the feeder before lunch.
- Peanuts are the feeder food most likely to be unsafe. Mold on peanuts can produce aflatoxin, so never use damp, shrivelled, discoloured or musty-smelling nuts, and never salted or seasoned ones.
- In-shell peanuts are not cheaper. At a typical 2.40 dollars per pound with roughly 73 percent of that weight as edible kernel, you pay about 3.29 dollars per pound actually eaten, against 3.10 for shelled.
- A peanut feeder is the most squirrel-attractive feeder in the yard. Solve it with pole geometry and a baffle, or with a cage, because no mesh alone will do it.
A peanut feeder is a wire mesh tube with a lid and a base. There is no port, no perch and no mechanism. The mesh is the entire design, and the size of the holes decides which birds can feed, how fast the food goes, and whether the feeder works at all.
Sizing the mesh to the nut#
Get this wrong and the feeder either pours its contents onto the grass or holds food no bird can reach.

The rule underneath the table: the opening should be smaller than the food, not larger. A bird should have to work a piece out or chip at it through the wire. If a bird can lift a whole item out cleanly, you have built a takeaway counter.

Peanuts sit at the very top of a jay's list, in shell and out, and jays do not eat at a feeder in the way a chickadee does. A jay loads up and leaves. At an open tray it will take several nuts in a visit, stuff them in its throat, fly off to cache them, and come back, which is how a tray of peanuts vanishes before you have finished your coffee.
Wire mesh changes the economics. Gripping the outside of a tube and chipping pieces off a wedged nut is slow, awkward work, and the jay cannot carry the pile away. It still gets fed, but it feeds at roughly the same rate as everything else, so the Blue Jays in your yard stop being a monopoly. That is the honest case for a mesh feeder: not exclusion, but throughput control.
The same logic gets you the small birds. Nuthatches and titmice cling naturally and can work a vertical wire face all day, which is why a peanut feeder and a suet cage tend to draw the same crowd.

Quality, mold and aflatoxin#
The nuts themselves are covered in peanuts for birds, and the short version is this. Peanuts are the feeder food where quality control matters most, because peanuts stored damp can grow fungus that produces aflatoxin, a toxin harmful to birds and to mammals. This is not a reason to avoid peanuts. It is a reason to be picky about them and ruthless about what you throw out.
What to buy:
- Peanuts sold for human consumption or explicitly packed for wild birds.
- Plain and raw, or plain roasted. Nothing salted, seasoned, honey-roasted, flavored or coated.
- Whole-looking kernels, uniform color, no dust in the bottom of the bag.
What to reject immediately:
- Anything shrivelled, blackened, greenish, or with a chalky bloom.
- Anything that smells musty, sour or like a damp cupboard.
- Nuts that have clumped into a solid mass in the bag or in the feeder.
- Any bag that was stored outdoors through a humid summer, however it looks.
Store the supply in a sealed container somewhere cool and dry, buy in quantities you will use within a couple of months rather than a sack that lasts a year, and check by smell every time you refill. Wet peanuts and the two-day fill#
A mesh feeder is deliberately open to the weather on every side, which is what keeps it from souring in the way a closed tube does, and also what lets rain straight in. Shelled peanuts absorb water fast, and in warm humid conditions visible mold can appear within a day or two of a soaking.
The working routine:
- Fill for two to three days of feeding, not for two weeks. On a 32 fl oz feeder that usually means filling it a third to a half.
- Hang it where it gets some shelter: under a dome, an eave, or a branch that breaks vertical rain.
- After heavy rain, tip the contents out and refill dry. Do not top up over wet nuts.
- Wash the feeder weekly in hot soapy water, brush the mesh, rinse and dry it fully. Mesh dries quickly, which is one of the design's genuine advantages.
The cost question: in-shell is not cheaper#
In-shell peanuts look like the economical option because the sticker price per pound is lower. Run the numbers on what the birds actually eat and it goes the other way.

Working from those figures: in-shell peanuts run about 2.40 dollars a pound, and roughly 73 percent of that weight is edible kernel, so a pound of food actually eaten costs about 3.29 dollars. Shelled peanuts at 3.10 dollars a pound are all kernel, so a pound eaten costs 3.10. In-shell is about 6 percent more expensive per pound of food delivered, plus you get shell litter under the feeder.
Against black oil sunflower, shelled peanuts cost roughly 72 percent more per pound eaten and pay you back in protein: about 26 percent against sunflower's 20 percent, at a similar fat level. That is the trade. The sunflower side of that sum is worked through in best bird seed and seed cost per calorie.
The reason to buy in-shell anyway is the show. Jays, Red-bellied Woodpeckers and, in the West, Steller's Jays and California Scrub-Jays will work an in-shell nut in the open where you can watch them.
In-shell peanuts: rings, wreaths and trays#
Whole peanuts need their own presentation, since they will not stay in a half-inch mesh.
- A wire spiral or wreath. Nuts are threaded onto a coil or dropped into a wide ring. Jays and large woodpeckers work them off one at a time. Refill daily, because these hold very little.
- A tray with a lip. The simplest option: put a handful of in-shell nuts on a platform feeder and let the jays take them. Put out a measured handful once a day rather than keeping the tray stocked, so nothing sits out overnight.
- Scattered on a wall or rail. Works, costs nothing, and trains jays to arrive at a set time.
Whatever you use, clear up shell fragments. Peanut debris under a feeder attracts rodents faster than sunflower hulls do, which matters if you have a garage, deck or compost heap nearby. See rats and mice at feeders.
Squirrels: the honest position#
The matrix scores a peanut feeder at the bottom of the range for squirrel resistance, and that is correct. Peanuts are the highest-value food most backyard squirrels will encounter, and wire mesh hands them a perfect climbing and gripping surface. Light mesh gets chewed open at the seams; the lid gets levered off; a hanging feeder gets swung at from above.
There are only two reliable answers, and neither of them is a feeder feature:
- Pole geometry. A baffle top at about 4.5 to 5 ft on a smooth pole, with at least 7 ft of clear air in every direction, defeats squirrels regardless of what is hanging from it. Check yours in the baffle calculator or read baffles and poles.
- A cage around the feeder. Openings of about 1.5 in let chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and Downy Woodpeckers through and keep squirrels out entirely. It costs you jay access, which may or may not be a loss depending on your view of jays.

Frequently asked questions#
What mesh size should a peanut feeder be?
Match the nut. Shelled peanut halves need about a 1/2 in grid: small enough that a bird works at the nut through the wire, large enough that pieces do not jam. Whole in-shell peanuts need 3/4 in to 1 in, or a wire ring designed for them. Peanut splits and hearts need roughly 1/4 in, or they pour out. If your feeder empties in an afternoon the mesh is too coarse for the nut you are using, and birds are lifting whole pieces out rather than feeding at it.
Are peanuts safe for birds?
Plain, dry, unsalted peanuts in good condition are an excellent bird food, high in fat and about 26 percent protein. The risk is mold. Peanuts stored damp can grow fungus that produces aflatoxin, which is toxic to birds, so discard any nuts that are shrivelled, discoloured, dusty, clumped together or smell musty. Never offer salted, roasted-and-seasoned, honey-roasted or chocolate-coated nuts. Buy quantities you will use within a couple of months and keep them cool, dry and sealed.
Why do peanuts go moldy so fast in the feeder?
Because a mesh feeder gives rain access from every direction and peanuts absorb water quickly. In warm humid weather visible mold can appear on soaked nuts within a day or two. Fill only what your birds will eat in two or three days, hang the feeder under a dome or the eaves, and after heavy rain tip the whole lot out rather than letting it dry in place. Wet peanuts that have dried into a solid plug should be thrown away, not broken up.
Do peanut feeders keep Blue Jays away?
No, but they slow jays down, which is usually what people actually want. At an open tray a jay takes several peanuts in one visit and caches them, so a tray can be stripped in minutes. Through a 1/2 in mesh a jay has to grip the wire and chip pieces off, which takes time and lets chickadees, titmice and nuthatches get their turns. If you want to feed jays generously as well, put in-shell peanuts on a separate tray away from the mesh feeder.
Can squirrels get into a peanut feeder?
Yes, easily, and peanuts are the food they want most. Wire mesh gives a squirrel exactly the grip it needs, and thin mesh gets chewed open. The fixes are structural, not clever: hang the feeder on a pole with a baffle top at 4.5 to 5 ft and 7 to 10 ft of clear air around it, or put the whole feeder inside a cage with 1.5 in openings. Expect to solve this properly or to feed squirrels on purpose, because half measures just fund them.
Shelled or in-shell peanuts?
Shelled for the mesh feeder, in-shell for jays and woodpeckers on a tray or ring. Shelled peanuts feed the widest range of species because chickadees, titmice and nuthatches cannot open a shell. In-shell nuts are showier and last longer on a tray because opening them takes work, but the shell is about 27 percent of what you pay for, and shell fragments make a mess under the feeder that needs raking up.
