Storing birdseed so it is still worth eating in three months

Seed does not usually go bad in the feeder. It goes bad in the garage, and it takes about six weeks.

The short answer

  • Moisture controls everything else. Dry seed in a sealed container is stable for months; the same seed in a bag on a concrete floor draws damp and molds.
  • A galvanised metal can with a seating lid is the only common container a rat cannot chew through. Plastic bins are convenient and rodent-permeable.
  • Freeze every new bag for 48 hours at 0 °F, flattened to no more than 4 in thick, then let it come back to room temperature sealed before you open it.
  • High-oil seed goes rancid before it looks bad. Sunflower hearts and shelled peanuts are the first to turn, and birds reject the smell long before you notice it.
  • Meal moth webbing and weevil exit holes both come home in the bag. Neither needs a chemical to fix, and neither makes the seed dangerous to birds.

Buy a 40 lb bag in October and by Christmas you may be feeding birds something they no longer want. Nothing dramatic happens to it. The oil in the sunflower slowly oxidises, the moisture content drifts up on damp days, and one morning the feeder stops emptying and you assume the birds have gone somewhere else.

Storage is worth getting right for a simple reason: it is the cheapest seed you will ever buy, because it is seed you already own.

Moisture is the variable that controls the others#

Dry seed is stable seed. Grain and oilseed hold roughly 8 to 12% moisture when they leave the supplier, and at that level nothing much can grow on them. Push seed moisture up past about 14% and mold has what it needs, and the seed will get there on its own if the air around it is humid enough for long enough. A sealed container solves this by disconnecting the seed from the air. An open bag does not.

Three moisture paths cause almost every ruined bin:

  1. Concrete. A bag or bin sitting directly on a garage slab wicks damp from below and stays colder than the air, so water condenses on it. Put storage on a pallet, a couple of lengths of 2x4 or a shelf, never straight on the floor.
  2. Temperature swings inside a sealed can. Seal a can in a cold shed and move it into the sun and the air inside warms, then cools again overnight against the metal wall, dropping its water onto the seed near the lid. Store where the temperature is steady, and never seal seed that is warmer than the room.
  3. The scoop. A wet scoop, wet hands, or rain blown into an open lid puts a small amount of free water into a large amount of dry seed, and that is where a mold pocket starts. Keep the scoop out of the can, hung on a nail.

If it has already gone wrong, work through moldy seed before you refill anything, because a contaminated container will spoil the next batch too.

A 20 gallon metal can takes roughly 65 lb of black oil sunflower, so a little over one and a half standard bags with room left to work a scoop. Two smaller cans beat one big one: you can finish one completely before opening the other, which is the whole basis of rotation.

The original bag deserves its bad rating. Woven poly sacks are stitched, not sealed, and the needle holes down the seam are large enough for a meal moth larva. Nothing about the bag it came in was designed for storage.

Heat, oil and why seed goes flat before it goes bad#

Rancidity is oxidation, and oxidation roughly doubles in rate for every 18 °F rise, which is the standard rule of thumb for reaction rates rather than anything specific to birdseed. It is close enough to be useful: seed that keeps a year at 55 °F keeps something like three months at 90 °F. That is the whole argument against the summer garage.

Two features decide how fast a food turns:

  • Fat content. Look at the oil column below. Sunflower and peanuts sit around half fat by weight, which is exactly why birds want them and exactly why they spoil first.
  • Whether the hull is intact. A hull is an oxygen barrier and a light shield. Seed in the shell keeps two to four times as long as the same seed hulled, which is the hidden cost of sunflower hearts and the reason to buy them in small amounts.

Nyjer is a special case. It is heat-treated before import to stop it germinating, so it starts its shelf life already partly cooked, and it dries out rather than smelling rancid. Old nyjer is the most common reason a finch feeder sits untouched with a full tube. Test it: crush twenty seeds on a white paper towel and look for a translucent oil ring. No ring, no finches.

Freeze every new bag for 48 hours#

Insects come home in the bag. They are already there when you buy it, as eggs you cannot see, and a warm cupboard is all they need. Freezing new seed on arrival is quarantine, and it is worth doing on every bag containing corn, millet, milo or wheat, which means most seed mixes.

  1. Split the bag into 2 gallon bags and flatten each one to 4 in thick or less. A solid 40 lb bag will not chill through in two days; the core sits above freezing and the eggs survive.
  2. Freeze at 0 °F for 48 hours. Give it 4 days if your freezer is a fridge-top compartment that does not truly hold 0 °F.
  3. Let each bag return to room temperature before opening it. This step is the one people skip. Cold seed in warm air pulls condensation out of the room and onto every kernel, and you have just put water into your dry seed.
  4. Tip into the clean can and label the lid with the month.

The two insects you will meet#

Neither of these makes seed unsafe for birds. Birds eat insects. The problem is that both spread to your own pantry, and both mean the seed is being eaten by something that is not paying you in goldfinches.

Indian meal moth#

The adult is small, about a 5/8 in wingspan, and unmistakable once you know it: the inner third of the forewing is pale gray-tan and the outer two thirds are coppery bronze, with a sharp line between them. They fly in a lazy zigzag and rest on ceilings and upper walls with the wings folded tight.

The larvae are the actual pest. Cream to pinkish, up to about 1/2 in, with a brown head, and they spin silk. The diagnostic sign is webbing: seed clumped together in mats on the surface of the bin, or silk threads across the lid rim. Larvae crawl upward and away from the food to pupate, so a clean-looking bin with cocoons under the lid lip is a classic finding.

Control, without chemicals:

  • Freeze all affected seed for 48 hours as above.
  • Empty and vacuum the container, then wash the rim, the lid threads and every corner in hot soapy water. Eggs and pupae survive a casual wipe.
  • Vacuum the shelf, the wall crack behind it, and the floor edge.
  • Hang a pheromone monitoring trap for males. It is not a cure, but it tells you whether you got them and it thins the next flight.
  • Use up the infested seed outdoors quickly rather than storing it.

Grain weevils#

Granary and rice weevils are 1/8 to 3/16 in, dark reddish brown to almost black, with an obvious downward-curving snout about a third of the body length and a pitted, dimpled thorax. Rice weevils have four faint pale spots on the wing covers and can fly; granary weevils are plain, shiny and flightless. If you see beetles crawling up the inside wall of the can, get one onto a fingertip and look for the snout. That snout separates a weevil from every other small beetle in a seed store.

Weevils develop inside whole kernels, so they live in the grain fraction of your seed, not in sunflower hulls. Look for small round exit holes in corn and wheat kernels, and a fine flour-like dust at the bottom of the bin. Heavy infestations leave kernels that feel light and crush hollow between your fingers.

Freezing kills them at every stage. Beyond that, control is rotation: buy grain-heavy mixes and cracked corn in amounts you will use within about two months, and never pour a new bag on top of an old one. The same rule that ruins a feeder ruins a bin.

How long each food really keeps#

Our working figures rather than measurements. "Cool" means a steady indoor space under 60 °F. "Warm" means a garage that spends the summer between 80 and 90 °F.

Read that table as a shopping rule, not just a storage rule. If you go through 5 lb of sunflower hearts a month, a 40 lb sack is an eight month supply of a three month product, and the bulk discount was an illusion. A rotation that survives real life#

  • One can in use, one can sealed. Never mix them.
  • Write the month on the lid in chalk pen every time you refill.
  • Empty a can completely before refilling. Old seed at the bottom is where every infestation starts, exactly as it is in a feeder.
  • Keep the summer stock small. From June to September, buy monthly and hold the surplus in the freezer instead of the shed.
  • Give the empty can five minutes of hot soapy water and a full day to dry before it goes back into service, the same standard you would apply in cleaning a feeder.

If the feeders are still quiet after all this and the seed is demonstrably fresh, the problem is elsewhere: work through no birds at my feeder, and check that what you are offering matches the birds you actually have in which seed to buy.

Frequently asked questions#

How long does birdseed last in storage?

Sealed, cool and dry, most seed in the hull keeps 9 to 12 months, and low-oil grain like millet keeps longer. Hulled products are the short ones: sunflower hearts and shelled peanuts run 2 to 3 months before the oil starts to turn. Heat halves all of it. In a garage that hits 85 °F through the summer, treat 12 months as 3 and buy in smaller quantities instead. The seed does not become poisonous, it becomes unappetizing, and birds simply stop emptying the feeder.

Can you store bird seed in a plastic bin?

Yes, with two caveats. A rat or a squirrel will chew through a thin plastic tote in a night, so a bin only works where rodents cannot reach it. And a snap-lid bin without a gasket is not airtight, so it will not stop meal moths crawling in or out. A food-grade bucket with a gasketed screw lid solves the moth problem but not the rodent one. If you have any sign of rats or mice, use galvanised metal.

How do I get rid of moths in my bird seed?

Bag the seed, flatten it, and freeze it at 0 °F for at least 48 hours to kill eggs, larvae and adults. Then empty the container completely, vacuum it, and scrub the rim, the lid threads and the corners with hot soapy water: larvae crawl up the walls to pupate at the seam and that is where the next generation hides. Vacuum the shelf and the wall crack behind it too. Do not use an insecticide near bird food. Infested seed is safe to feed outdoors, so use it up rather than binning it.

Should I freeze new bird seed?

It is the single most effective thing you can do, and it costs nothing. Every bag of seed arrives with some population of moth eggs or weevils in it, especially mixes containing cracked corn, milo and millet. Split the bag into 2 gallon bags, flatten them to 4 in or less so the middle actually reaches 0 °F, and freeze for 48 hours. Then, and this matters, let each bag warm to room temperature while still sealed. Opening a cold bag in warm air condenses water onto the seed.

Is it safe to feed birds seed that has gone moldy?

No. Throw it out. Mold on seed, particularly on cracked corn and peanuts, can carry aflatoxins produced by Aspergillus molds, and these cause real harm to birds at low doses. Clumped seed, a musty cellar smell, gray or green fuzz, or a caked crust at the bottom of a bin all mean the same thing. Bin it, wash the container, dry it fully, and find the leak or the condensation path that let water in.

Why did birds stop eating seed that looks fine?

It is probably rancid. Oil in sunflower and peanuts oxidises with heat and air, and the seed keeps its color and shape long after it stops being palatable. The tell is smell: cup a handful and breathe in. Fresh sunflower smells faintly nutty and of nothing much. Stale seed smells like old crayons, putty or oil paint. With nyjer, crush twenty seeds on a paper towel: fresh nyjer leaves a translucent oil ring, dead nyjer leaves dust.
