Hummingbird nectar recipe: 4 parts water, 1 part sugar
One cup of plain white sugar in four cups of water. Everything else on this page is about the two mistakes that follow.
The short answer
- Four parts water to one part plain white granulated sugar, measured by volume. That is the whole recipe.
- Boiling is for dissolving the sugar and for slightly longer fridge life. It does not sterilize the feeder, and nectar in a feeder spoils on the same clock whether you boiled it or not.
- Never use honey, brown sugar, raw or turbinado sugar, molasses, artificial sweetener or red dye. Each fails for a different reason and none of them is worth testing.
- A made batch keeps up to two weeks in a sealed jar in the fridge. Nectar in a feeder in 90 °F weather needs changing every day.
- If the nectar is cloudy, stringy, or has black specks at the ports, it is already past the point where a hummingbird should be drinking it.

The reason this page runs longer than two lines is that almost every hummingbird feeder problem comes after the mixing: the wrong sugar, an additive, a batch left too long, or a feeder changed on a calendar that does not match the weather.
The recipe, in the sizes you actually make#
Measure the water before the sugar goes in. Dissolved sugar takes up volume, so if you pour sugar into a jug and then fill to a line, you have made a weaker mix than you think.

One cup of sugar weighs about 200 g, so a four-cup batch is roughly 200 g of sugar in about 946 g of water: near enough 17 to 18% sugar by weight. That is the number worth remembering, because it is what tells you the ratio is not arbitrary. It lands in the same band as the flower nectars hummingbirds feed on, which is why 4:1 has held up as the standard and why sweeter mixes are not a favor.

Should you boil it? The honest answer#
Boiling helps with two things, and it does not do the thing most people boil for.
What boiling does. It dissolves sugar fast, and it kills yeasts and bacteria present in the water and sugar, which means a batch you make and refrigerate holds up a little better over its two-week fridge life.
What boiling does not do. It does not sterilize the feeder, and the feeder is where the problem is. The moment cooled nectar goes into a bottle that has been outdoors, it picks up whatever is on the plastic, in the air and on the ports. Hummingbird bills and tongues carry their own microflora into it every visit. Within hours a boiled batch and an unboiled batch in the same feeder are microbiologically indistinguishable.
So boil if it suits you, particularly if you are making a large batch to keep in the fridge. Do not boil and then feel you have bought yourself extra days on the feeder. You have not. The change interval below is set by the weather, not by how you made it.
No red dye#
There is no nutritional argument for dye and no attraction argument either. Hummingbirds locate feeders by the red on the hardware: the ports, the base, the flowers molded into the lid. Every feeder worth buying already has that color built in, and a bird will find a clear solution in a red-ported feeder exactly as fast.
That leaves only the risk side of the ledger, however small you judge it. A hummingbird consumes a very large volume of nectar relative to its body mass every day, so any dissolved additive is delivered at a rate that has no human equivalent. When the benefit is precisely zero, that is the end of the discussion. If a feeder you own came with a red concentrate, throw the concentrate away and keep the feeder.
The four sugars that are not sugar#
Each of these fails for its own reason, and knowing the reason is what stops you making an exception later.
- Honey. Not simple sucrose. It carries its own yeasts and spores, and diluted in water it cultures yeast and mold far faster than sugar water does. A honey water feeder in summer becomes a growth medium in a day or two, and repeated feeding at fungal growth is a real hazard to the bird.
- Brown sugar, raw sugar, turbinado, demerara. These are white sugar with molasses either left in or added back. Molasses carries iron and other minerals, and small nectar feeders drinking large daily volumes are a poor place to introduce a mineral load nobody has any reason to add. Less refined also means more for microbes to work on, so it ferments sooner.
- Molasses, maple syrup, agave, fruit juice. Same problem as above with the additional issue of unpredictable sugar composition and much faster spoilage.
- Artificial sweeteners. The failure here is not toxicity, it is starvation. A hummingbird drinks nectar for calories. A sweetener with no calories tastes like food, delivers nothing, and displaces real feeding at exactly the time of day when the bird can least afford it.
Plain white granulated sugar, cane or beet, is what you want. Both are sucrose and there is no practical difference between them. The wider list of things that should never reach a bird is on what not to feed birds.
How often to change it#
Nectar spoils on a temperature clock. Yeasts and bacteria multiply faster as it warms, and a feeder in direct sun runs well above air temperature. Use the daytime high, then adjust for sun.

Adjustments that matter:
- Full afternoon sun: move one row down the table. A feeder in sun at 82 °F is behaving like one at 90 °F.
- Deep shade: do not move up a row. Shade slows spoilage, it does not stop it.
- Humidity: high humidity accelerates it further. In the Deep South in July, daily is the only safe answer regardless of what the thermometer says.
The single most effective change most people can make is to stop filling the feeder. A feeder filled a quarter full and changed on time beats a full one changed when it looks low. If you have a large-capacity bottle and two hummingbirds, you are throwing away most of every batch, which is also an argument for the saucer designs that hold less and come apart for washing.

Hummingbirds are the obvious audience, but orioles take sugar water readily and will use a hummingbird feeder if the ports are large enough, which is why oriole feeders exist with wider perches and bigger openings. A weaker mix, commonly around six parts water to one part sugar, is often used for orioles. Some woodpeckers, notably Red-bellied, will work at a nectar port too.

When to put it up and when to take it down#
Put a feeder up about two weeks before hummingbirds are expected in your area and leave it up about two weeks after you last see one. Leaving a feeder up does not stop a hummingbird migrating: departure is driven by day length, not by food availability, and a late feeder supports stragglers and late-hatched young rather than trapping anyone. If wasps and bees are taking over the ports, that is a feeder design problem rather than a recipe problem, and it is fixed with bee-resistant port guards and placement rather than by weakening the mix.

Do you have to boil hummingbird nectar?
No. Boiling does two useful things and one thing people wrongly credit it with. It dissolves sugar quickly, and it kills organisms in the water and sugar, which buys a made batch a little more life in the fridge. What it does not do is sterilize anything once the nectar is in the feeder. The feeder has yeasts on it, the air has yeasts in it, and hummingbird bills carry their own. Boiled nectar in a feeder ferments on the same schedule as unboiled. Use hot tap water if you like, and put the effort into changing and washing instead.
What is the correct ratio for hummingbird food?

That works out to roughly 17 to 18% sugar by weight, which sits in the range of the flower nectars hummingbirds feed on naturally. Because there is no upside and a real dose. A hummingbird drinks a large volume relative to its body mass every day, so anything dissolved in the nectar is consumed at a rate no human ever matches. Set against that, dye does nothing: hummingbirds find feeders by the red plastic on the feeder itself, and a clear solution in a red-ported feeder is found just as fast. Check it before every fill: fresh nectar is water-clear and pours like water. If it looks hazy, has a faint sour smell, or strings slightly as it pours, throw it out. Do not top up a fridge jar with a fresh batch. Wash the jar and start clean each time.
Is store-bought nectar better than homemade?
No. Homemade 4:1 is the same thing minus the packaging, and most concentrates and ready mixes are sugar water with additives you did not need. Homemade also costs a fraction as much: a household batch works out to somewhere around 15 to 20 cents per pound of finished nectar.
