Baffle vs squirrel-proof feeder
One of these is geometry and one is hardware. Geometry does not wear out, and it protects every feeder on the pole at once.
The short answer
- A correctly placed baffle on a pole beats any squirrel-proof feeder. It has no mechanism, it protects every feeder on the pole, and it works on raccoons too if it is long enough.
- The geometry is not negotiable: baffle top about 5 ft above ground or snowpack, at least 7 ft of clear air horizontally, about 9 ft of clearance overhead. Two out of three is a fed squirrel.
- Per feeder per year, our working figures put a baffled pole at roughly $1 to $2, a caged feeder at $4 to $6, and a weight-activated feeder at $12 to $25.
- A squirrel-proof feeder is the right buy when you cannot control the surroundings: a rented yard, a hanging line, a balcony, a spot with a fence or a shed inside the 7 ft circle.
- Neither approach touches bears, and in bear country the guidance to take feeders down overrides everything else.
Use a baffle on a pole if you can put a pole where it needs to go. It has nothing to wear out, it protects every feeder hanging on that pole at once, and it works on raccoons as well if the baffle is long enough. A squirrel-proof feeder wins in the situation the baffle cannot address: when you do not control the ground around the feeder. A rented yard, a balcony, a hanging line from a branch, a spot where a fence or a shed sits five feet away and cannot be moved. In those places buy the hardware, and buy the version without a mechanism if you can.

Why a baffled pole wins where you can build one#
The numbers behind it are jump capability, and they are the whole design. A gray squirrel clears roughly 4 to 5 ft vertically from a standstill, 7 to 10 ft in a horizontal leap, and further again when dropping with gravity helping. So:
- Baffle top about 5 ft above ground or, in snow country, above the top of your usual snowpack. Eighteen inches of settled snow turns a 5 ft baffle into a 3.5 ft baffle.
- At least 7 ft of clear air in every direction to the nearest fence, deck rail, shed roof, wall, planter, tree trunk or the neighbor's woodpile. Ten feet if the squirrels where you live are practiced.
- About 9 ft of clearance overhead below branches, eaves, gutters and wires.
All three at once. Two out of three is a fed squirrel, and the one people miss is nearly always the horizontal distance, because a fence line does not feel like part of the feeder. The economics follow from the fact that a pole is shared infrastructure. A 1 in steel pole set 18 to 24 in deep with a 6 in torpedo baffle typically runs $50 to $80 all in, lasts ten to twenty years, and carries three or four feeders. Spread across four feeders over fifteen years that is a little over a dollar per feeder per year. Hardware in the same yard:

Those are category ranges and our own service-life figures rather than any specific product, but the ordering is stable and it is not close.
Where a squirrel-proof feeder is the better buy#
You do not control the ground. Renting, a shared yard, buried utilities, a garden bed you cannot dig, a landlord or association that will not allow a pole. All real, all common.
The only hanging point is a branch or a bracket. A feeder hung from a tree limb is inside the squirrel's world by definition. A dome baffle helps and is worth fitting, but it competes with a drop from above, which is the jump squirrels are best at.
You want the pest exclusion as a bonus. A wire cage with 1.5 in mesh keeps out squirrels and also grackles, starlings and House Sparrows, which a baffle does nothing about. That double duty is a genuine reason to choose one even in a yard where a pole would work.

You want cardinals and jays to keep feeding. This is the fork between the two mechanism types. A cage locks out cardinals, jays, grosbeaks and doves permanently along with the pests. A weight-activated feeder set to close above roughly 400 to 600 g keeps them feeding and stops the squirrel, at the price of owning a mechanism that will eventually stick in cold, wet or dusty weather. If you cannot mount a pole#
In descending order of how well they work.
- A portable pole base. A 1 in pole set in a bucket of concrete, a filled patio umbrella stand or a weighted plate gets you real geometry on a patio, a driveway or a roof terrace. Check the 7 ft circle before you site it. This is the option most people overlook and it is the best one on the list.
- A caged feeder. No mechanism, no batteries, nothing to service. Hang it anywhere. Accept that you have given up cardinals and jays at that feeder.
- A horizontal cable run. String a wire between two supports and thread lengths of pipe or plastic tube onto it either side of the feeder. A squirrel that steps onto a rolling tube gets put on the ground. Keep both anchor points more than 7 ft from anything climbable.
- A dome baffle above a hanging feeder. Minimum 15 to 18 in across, hung so the feeder sits well below it and so the whole assembly is clear of every launch point. Works better than nothing, worse than a pole.
- Change the seed. Squirrels largely ignore safflower, and cardinals, chickadees and house finches take it. Expect a two to three week adjustment period while your regulars work out that it is food.

When neither one is the answer#
Bears. Nothing on this page applies. In bear country the guidance is to take feeders down entirely for the active season, and a baffled pole simply hands a bear a convenient handle. See bears at feeders.
Raccoons. A baffle works on raccoons only if it is long enough to defeat a reach-over, which usually means a longer pole baffle or a wider dome than the squirrel version. A weight-activated feeder does nothing at all, since a raccoon simply hangs off it or pulls it down. Details in raccoons.
Seed vanishing with no squirrel in sight. Overnight disappearance points to rats and mice or deer rather than squirrels, and both are solved by clearing spillage and bringing feeders in at dusk rather than by any hardware.
The feeder is in the wrong place to begin with. If the only spot you can reach with a ladder is under a low branch against a fence, no purchase fixes that. Frequently asked questions#
Do squirrel baffles actually work?
Yes, when the geometry is right, and not at all when it is not. A baffle is a physical barrier that only works in combination with distance: a gray squirrel clears roughly 4 to 5 ft vertically from a standstill and 7 to 10 ft horizontally, further again when dropping from above. So the baffle top has to sit about 5 ft up, with at least 7 ft of clear air to the nearest fence, deck rail, shed or tree trunk, and about 9 ft below anything it can drop from. Miss any one of those and the baffle is decoration.
Is a squirrel-proof feeder better than a baffle?
No, it is a fallback. Every mechanism can eventually be defeated, and every mechanism eventually fails on its own: springs stiffen, slides gum up with seed dust and damp, freezing rain glazes a weight-activated shroud open or shut. A baffled pole has nothing to fail and protects everything hanging on the pole rather than one feeder. Buy the mechanism when you cannot control the surroundings, which is a common enough situation that squirrel-proof feeders exist for good reason.
How do I stop squirrels if I cannot put a pole in the ground?
In order of effectiveness: a caged feeder, because it has no mechanism to fail and also excludes grackles and starlings; a long horizontal cable strung between two supports with lengths of pipe threaded on either side of the feeder, which spin under a squirrel's weight; a wide dome baffle above a hanging feeder, hung well clear of every launch point; and a pole set in a heavy portable base such as a filled bucket or an umbrella stand, which gets you back to real geometry on a patio.
What size baffle stops a squirrel?
For a pole, a torpedo or stovepipe baffle at least 6 in in diameter and 15 to 18 in long. For a hanging feeder, a dome at least 15 to 18 in across, and 18 in or more if raccoons visit. The two failure modes are different problems: a squirrel reaching around the baffle is a diameter problem, and one climbing past it by gripping the pole above the flare is a length problem. Undersized baffles are the most common wasted purchase in bird feeding.
Why did my squirrel-proof setup stop working in winter?
Usually snow, not the feeder. Snowpack raises the ground, so a baffle set with its top at 5 ft is effectively at 3.5 ft after 18 in of settled snow, and a crusted drift gives a launch platform that did not exist in October. Measure baffle height from the top of your usual snowpack, not from the grass. The second cause is the mechanism itself: cold stiffens springs and freezing rain glazes moving parts, so weight-activated feeders fail in exactly the weather when birds need the food most.
Does safflower or hot pepper seed replace a baffle?
No, they reduce pressure. Squirrels largely ignore safflower, and cardinals, chickadees and house finches take it, so switching seed genuinely lowers the number of visits. Capsaicin works because birds do not respond to it the way mammals do, but a hungry squirrel will still work at a pepper-treated feeder, and the dust is an irritant to handle. Treat both as supplements to correct geometry, never as replacements for it.
