Feeder repair and maintenance: the checks that double a feeder's life
Most feeders are not worn out when they are thrown away. They are blocked, chewed at one port, or missing a drainage hole nobody ever cleared.
The short answer
- Five minutes a month catches nearly every failure: check ports, perches, drainage, the lid seal and the hanger.
- Blocked drainage holes cause more ruined seed than rain does. Clear them with a wire every time you refill.
- One chewed port drains a whole tube. Replace the port or fit a metal surround; do not tape it and hope.
- Two deep cleans a year, in early spring and mid autumn, plus the routine cleaning interval in between.
- Retire a feeder when it cannot be fully taken apart and washed, when the plastic has gone chalky and brittle, or when repairs have left rough surfaces that hold residue.
Feeders rarely die of old age. They die of one chewed port that drains the tube every time it is filled, a base whose drainage holes closed up two winters ago, or a lid seal that stopped sealing and let a season of rain in. All three take under five minutes to catch and most of an afternoon to regret.
Here is the whole maintenance system: a monthly look, a check at every refill, two deep cleans a year, and a clear rule for when to stop repairing.
The monthly five-minute check#
Do this on the first refill of each month. It is the same seven points on every feeder you own.
- Ports. Any chewed, cracked or enlarged opening. A hole that has grown past its original shape will keep growing.
- Perches. Loose, split, spinning or missing. Split wood holds residue and is a direct disease risk.
- Drainage. Hold the base up to the light. If you cannot see through the holes, they are blocked.
- Lid and seal. Does the lid still sit flat and latch? Lift it and look for a water line on the inside wall of the feeder.
- Hanger, bail and chain. Corrosion, a bent hook, a wire worn thin where it pivots. This is what drops a full feeder onto a patio.
- Seed level movement. Has the bottom inch moved since last month? If not, you have a bridge or a plug, not a full feeder.
- Smell. Open it and smell it. Sour or musty means damp seed and a clean is overdue.
Ports and perches#
A port is the most heavily used part of a seed feeder and the first thing to fail.
Chewed ports. Squirrels open a soft plastic port into a hole large enough to drain a full tube in an afternoon. Once that happens the feeder leaks permanently. Options in order of durability: a manufacturer replacement port insert; a metal port surround fitted over the opening; a stainless washer or thin metal plate screwed over the hole with every cut edge filed smooth. What does not work is tape of any kind. It fails when wet, it holds seed dust and residue against the plastic, and it comes off in the first hard frost.
Cracked or spinning perches. A perch that rotates under a bird's weight will be abandoned, and a split one holds residue in the crack. Wooden dowel perches are the easiest repair: cut a replacement from hardwood dowel of the same diameter, sand the ends round, and fix with an exterior-grade adhesive. Metal perches usually mean replacing the assembly.
Perch length changes your species list, so a repair is also a decision. Under about 2 in you have a small-bird feeder; at 4 in and above, cardinals and grosbeaks can stand. Drainage#
More seed is ruined by blocked drainage than by rain landing on a feeder.
Fines, dust and hull fragments settle to the lowest point in any feeder and pack into the drainage holes. Once closed, the base holds water after every rain, the bottom inch of seed swells, sets into a plug and grows mold. From the outside the feeder still looks full.
- Clear the holes at every refill with stiff wire, a bamboo skewer or a paperclip.
- If a feeder has no drainage at all, drill two or three holes of about 3/16 in at the lowest points of the base and deburr them.
- If the base is a flat disc that traps water, add a shallow inner cone or simply keep the fill level low so the bottom inch never sits for long.
- Check the base seam. Where a plastic base meets a tube, a hairline gap wicks water in. Dry it fully and seal from the outside.

Cracks, sun and cold#
Ultraviolet light is what kills plastic feeders. The symptom is a surface that has gone pale, chalky and slightly rough. That plastic has lost its plasticisers and is brittle all the way through, so a knock in a January frost will split it.
A crack worth repairing is short, clean-edged, in thick plastic, and in an area that is not carrying load. Drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it running, clean and dry the surface, and seal the line with an outdoor-grade waterproof adhesive or sealant, applied from the outside where possible. Let it cure fully before use. Expect a season or two, not a repair.
A crack not worth repairing runs through a mounting point, spreads from an existing repair, or appears in chalky plastic. Sealant on a rough or crazed surface creates exactly the kind of irregular seam that holds seed residue, which is the opposite of what you want on a surface birds press against.
Glass and metal do not have this failure mode, which is most of the argument in bird feeder materials. Wooden feeders have their own: check for delaminating plywood and for joints that have opened, and never treat interior surfaces with preservative or paint.
Rust, poles and hardware#
Poles fail at the ground line, where wet soil, oxygen and steel meet. Everything above it can look fine while the bottom 6 in thins out, and then a full station goes over in a gale.
An annual pole routine, best done on a dry day in autumn:
- Lift the pole out of the ground if the design allows, or dig the top 4 in of soil away from it.
- Wire-brush the bottom 12 in back to sound metal. Any flaking scale must come off.
- Wipe clean, let it dry completely.
- Apply a rust-inhibiting metal primer, then an exterior topcoat. Keep paint off any surface birds land on.
- Reset with a collar of coarse gravel around the base, which drains water away from the steel.
Hardware to check while you are there: S-hooks that have opened up under load, hanging chains worn thin at the link that pivots, screw eyes backing out of a wooden post, and any bracket where a bolt has corroded. The two deep cleans#
Routine cleaning is every two weeks, weekly in heat, damp or heavy traffic, following the method in how to clean a bird feeder. The deep cleans are different: they are maintenance sessions that happen to involve washing.
Early spring, late February to March. The winter's residue is at its worst and the busy spring season has not started.
- Fully disassemble every feeder, down to the last removable part.
- Wash, disinfect in one part household bleach to nine parts water, rinse and dry completely.
- Clear and enlarge drainage as needed.
- Replace all cracked perches and damaged ports now rather than in June.
- Wire-brush and touch up any surface rust on cages and hangers.
- Rake and remove the accumulated hull layer under each feeder.
- Retire anything that will not last the year.
Mid autumn, September to October. Preparation for the season when your feeders carry the most traffic and the worst weather.
- Same full disassembly, wash and disinfect.
- Check lid seals and gaskets specifically. Winter rain and snowmelt find every gap.
- Do the pole rust routine.
- Confirm drainage on every feeder, since blocked drainage in a freeze splits bases.
- Bring hummingbird and oriole feeders in for storage, cleaned and dry, in most of the continent.
- Check the seed store for pantry moths and damp before you buy winter quantities.

That last row is easy to skip and worth doing. Hulls, droppings and spilled seed build up in the ground under a feeder, and moving the station is the only genuine fix. It is also part of the disease picture set out in diseases at feeders.
When a feeder is beyond saving#
Retire it if any one of these is true:
- It cannot be fully taken apart and washed. No repair fixes this, and it is the most important criterion. A feeder with a sealed base or an unreachable internal cavity is a liability the day you buy it.
- The plastic is chalky and pale. It is brittle throughout and will fail again somewhere new.
- Repairs have left rough, taped or crazed surfaces. Anything that traps residue against a surface birds touch has to go.
- A load-bearing part has corroded. A thinned bail, a cracked hanging boss, a split top fixing. This one is a safety issue, not an aesthetic one.
- Wood has delaminated or rotted at a joint. Plywood that has separated cannot be dried properly and holds moisture indefinitely.
Salvage what you can before it goes. Cages, baffles, trays, hangers, port inserts, perches and mounting hardware are all reusable, and a box of harvested parts is what makes the next repair a ten-minute job. When you replace, apply the disassembly test in the shop: take the lid off, and ask whether a brush can reach every internal surface. Frequently asked questions#
How do I fix a bird feeder port a squirrel has chewed?
Replace it rather than patching it. Many tube feeders take replacement port inserts, and a metal port surround fitted over the damaged opening both repairs the hole and prevents a repeat. If no replacement part exists, a stainless washer or a short length of thin metal sheet fixed over the opening with stainless screws works, provided you file every cut edge smooth. Never use duct tape or a plastic patch: they hold residue, they fail when wet, and the squirrel simply chews through again.
Why is the seed in my feeder always wet?
Almost always blocked drainage. Feeder bases have small holes that clog with seed dust, fines and hull fragments within weeks, and once they are closed the base becomes a sump. Poke each hole clear with a piece of stiff wire or a bamboo skewer at every refill. If your feeder has no drainage holes at all, drill two or three of 3/16 in in the lowest part of the base. The second cause is a lid that no longer seals, which lets rain in from above.
How often should I deep-clean a bird feeder?
Twice a year on top of your normal cleaning interval. The spring deep clean, in late February or March, strips the winter's accumulated residue and checks everything before the busy season. The autumn one, in September or October, prepares feeders for heavy winter use and replaces anything that will not survive another season. Between those, wash on the normal schedule: every two weeks in mild dry conditions, weekly in heat, humidity or heavy traffic.
Can cracked plastic feeders be repaired?
Small clean cracks in thick plastic can be stabilized by drilling a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it spreading, then sealing the line with an outdoor-grade waterproof adhesive or sealant rated as safe once cured. That buys a season or two. It does not restore strength, and it leaves a seam that holds residue. Plastic that has gone chalky and pale from ultraviolet exposure is brittle throughout and will crack again elsewhere; that feeder is finished.
How do I stop a feeder pole rusting?
Deal with it at the ground line, which is where poles fail. Once a year, wire-brush the bottom 12 in back to bare metal, wipe it clean and dry, and repaint with a rust-inhibiting metal primer and topcoat. Do this in dry weather with the pole out of the ground if you can. A short sleeve of pipe or a gravel collar at the base keeps standing water away from the steel and buys years. When should I just throw a feeder away?
When it cannot be fully disassembled and washed, when the plastic is chalky and brittle, when repairs have left rough or taped surfaces that trap residue, or when a hanger, chain or bail has corroded to the point of being unsafe. A feeder you cannot clean properly is a health risk to the birds using it, and no repair fixes that. Recycle what can be recycled and replace with a design you can take apart.
