Native plants and cover: the food supply your feeder is only supplementing
A feeder is a snack bar. The plants around it decide whether birds can raise young in your yard at all.
The short answer
- Feeders supply energy to adult birds. Almost no North American songbird raises its young on seed, so the plants are the part that decides whether birds breed in your yard.
- Native plants host native caterpillars, and caterpillars are what nestlings are fed. Non-native ornamentals support a fraction of the insect life of a native of similar size.
- Keep cover 10 to 12 ft from the feeder: close enough to escape a hawk in one flight, far enough that a cat cannot ambush from it.
- Leave seed heads and stems standing through winter. A standing coneflower or sunflower head is a natural nyjer feeder that needs no cleaning.
- Structure beats species count. A yard with ground, shrub, understorey and canopy layers holds more birds than a yard with twice as many plants all at one height.
Stop thinking of the feeder as the food supply. In a healthy yard it is a supplement, roughly what a bowl of nuts on the counter is to your diet. The plants are the food supply, and they provide something a feeder cannot provide at all: insects, in the volume and at the moment that nesting birds need them.
That is the whole argument, and it holds regardless of where you live in North America.
The nesting season problem no feeder solves#
Adult chickadees eat seed happily. Chickadee nestlings do not. Nearly every North American songbird, including the ones queueing at your sunflower tube in January, raises its young on insects. Caterpillars in particular: soft-bodied, high in protein, easy for a parent to carry and a nestling to swallow.
A single brood is fed thousands of caterpillars before the young leave the nest, and the parents collect them within a short radius of the nest. If those caterpillars are not growing in your yard and the yards next to it, the birds are not breeding there, no matter how much seed you put out.
Caterpillars are host-specific. Most native butterfly and moth larvae can only digest the leaves of the plants their lineage evolved alongside, and they cannot switch to an introduced species just because it has green leaves. So a hedge of non-native ornamental shrubs can be lush and hold almost nothing edible, while a native shrub of the same size supports a far wider range of insect species.

Seed-bearing plants: cutting your own feeder dependence#
The second thing plants provide is the seed itself, produced free, on schedule, in the exact form the birds evolved to handle.
Look at which birds take nyjer, the small oily seed sold specifically for finches:
- Top-tier favorite for: American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinch, Pine Siskin
- Eaten readily by: House Finch, Purple Finch, Dark-eyed Junco
- Taken occasionally by: Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Mourning Dove, White-throated Sparrow, Song Sparrow
Every bird on that list is eating a bought, imported version of what a composite seed head produces naturally. A stand of native coneflowers, asters, goldenrods, sunflowers or native bunchgrasses puts out the same class of small oil-rich seed, in the same autumn window, without a feeder to clean or a bag to store. That does not mean stop buying nyjer, it means that in a well-planted yard you will buy less of it and your goldfinches will still be there.
The other categories worth planting for, in general terms rather than as a species list:
- Summer and autumn fruit. Native shrubs and small trees that fruit from midsummer through autumn fuel migration. Fruit-eating birds are the ones almost entirely absent from feeders.
- Persistent winter fruit. A few native shrubs and trees hold fruit into midwinter, which is what feeds waxwings and robins in February.
- Nut and mast trees. Oaks and their relatives feed jays and woodpeckers directly and, more importantly, host an enormous number of caterpillar species.
- Late seed. Native grasses and tall composites that hold seed above snow.
Doing this without a plant list#
Any list of specific plants is wrong somewhere. A shrub that is a keystone in Ohio may be a nuisance in Oregon and unable to survive a summer in Arizona. Rather than copying a list, use a method:
- Find your region's native plant list, not a national one. Search a native plant database by postal or ZIP code, or ask your state or provincial extension service or native plant society. Both will give you a list built for your rainfall and soil.
- Prioritize keystone woody plants. Oaks, willows, cherries and their local equivalents support the largest number of caterpillar species almost everywhere they occur in North America. One native canopy tree does more than a dozen ornamental shrubs.
- Check the plant is native to your area, not just to the continent. "Native" on a nursery label often means native somewhere. Ask which state or province.
- Avoid cultivars selected for purple or heavily doubled foliage and flowers. Dark-leaved selections are sometimes less palatable to the insects the plant is supposed to host, and doubled flowers often carry little or no accessible nectar or pollen.
- Buy small. A small plant establishes faster and cheaper than a large one and usually catches it up within a few seasons.
Regional honesty matters here. In the arid Southwest the goal is a dense mesquite-and-shrub structure with a reliable water source, and the water is doing much of the work described in bird baths and water. On the prairies, the equivalent of a shrub layer may be tall native grass and forbs. In the boreal North, conifer cover is the limiting factor in winter, not seed. In bear country, dense cover close to the house is a separate calculation entirely.
The 10 to 12 ft cover rule#
Cover is not decoration. It is the escape route, and its distance from the feeder is a real number with a reason on each side.

Layers, not species counts#
A yard with four vegetation layers holds more birds than a yard with twice the plant diversity all at one height, because different species feed at different levels and almost none of them overlap.

Most suburban yards have canopy and lawn and nothing in between. Adding the shrub layer is usually the highest-value single change, and it is also the layer that solves the cover distance problem and softens the reflections that cause window strikes.
Leaf litter deserves its own mention, because it is free and people remove it. The layer of leaves under a shrub is where overwintering insects and their pupae sit, and it is what towhees and thrushes are flipping through. Rake leaves off the lawn if you must, and rake them under the shrubs rather than into bags.
The brush pile#
The single cheapest habitat feature available, and one of the most used.
- Choose a spot near existing cover, not in the middle of the lawn, and not against the house where you would rather not host rodents.
- Lay the thickest logs or limbs down first in a rough open grid, crossed rather than stacked flat. The gaps at the bottom are the point: they are where a bird sits out a storm.
- Add progressively finer branches over the top, ending with twiggy material.
- Aim for roughly 4 to 6 ft across and 3 to 4 ft high. Smaller works, it just holds fewer birds.
- Top it up every year with prunings and, if you have one, the Christmas tree in January.
A brush pile 10 to 12 ft from a winter feeder is genuinely used all day: birds drop into it between visits, and they roost in it overnight. In a hawk pass it does the job of a shrub before your shrubs exist. Note the rodent caveat: pair it with the seed hygiene in rats and mice and keep spilled seed off the ground.
Leave the garden standing over winter#
Cutting a perennial border to the ground in October removes the winter food and the overwintering insects in one afternoon.
- Leave seed heads. Coneflowers, sunflowers, asters, goldenrods, native grasses. Goldfinches and siskins work them from first frost until the heads are stripped.
- Leave hollow stems. Many native bees and other insects overwinter inside them. Those insects are spring bird food.
- Cut in spring, not autumn, once temperatures have been reliably warm for a couple of weeks so that anything sheltering inside has emerged.
- Compromise if you need to. Cut the front third of the garden and leave the rest, or leave half the beds each year and alternate. Half a wild garden is most of the benefit.
The visual argument is worth making too: a standing coneflower head with a goldfinch on it in January is better looking than bare soil.
Shrinking the lawn, in stages#
Mown lawn covers more ground than any other planting in most neighborhoods and it feeds almost nothing. You do not have to remove it all, and starting with all of it is how these projects die.
- Year one: convert one bed, roughly 10 by 10 ft, on the side of the yard you see from a window. Smother the grass with cardboard and mulch rather than digging it out.
- Year two: plant the shrub layer along one boundary, 10 to 12 ft from the feeder station. Three to five shrubs is enough to change the yard.
- Year three: widen the beds outward from the boundary rather than making new islands. Connected habitat outperforms scattered patches.
- Ongoing: stop watering and fertilising what lawn remains, mow it higher, and let the clover in.
The end point most people reach is roughly half lawn, half planted, with the lawn kept where it is actually walked on. That is enough to change the species list, and it is a considerable reduction in mowing.
What changes when you do this#
Expect fewer feeder visits in late summer and autumn, more birds overall, and a longer list of species that never touch seed. Expect nesting in your own yard rather than nearby. And expect your feeder to become what it should have been all along: a supplement that gets your regulars through a hard week, rather than the only reason a bird is there. Frequently asked questions#
Do native plants really matter, or is that just gardening fashion?
They matter for one specific, measurable reason: insects. Most native caterpillars can only digest the leaves of the plants they evolved alongside, so a native tree or shrub supports far more caterpillar biomass than an introduced ornamental of the same size. Nestling songbirds are fed almost entirely on insects, and caterpillars are the preferred item because they are soft and protein-rich. A yard of non-native ornamentals can look green and hold almost no bird food.
How far from the feeder should cover be?
About 10 to 12 ft. That distance lets a bird reach a branch in a single flight when a hawk comes through, which is the whole point of cover. Closer than roughly 6 ft and the shrub becomes a hiding place for a cat, with the feeder within pouncing range. Further than about 20 ft and small birds hesitate to cross the open ground at all, which is a common reason a well-stocked feeder in the middle of a lawn stays empty.
What is a brush pile and how do I make one?
A loose heap of branches that gives small birds a place to hide, roost and shelter from weather. Lay the thickest logs down first in a rough grid to create cavities near the ground, then pile progressively finer branches on top. Aim for something roughly 4 to 6 ft across and 3 to 4 ft high, sited near cover rather than in the middle of the lawn. Add your Christmas tree and each year's prunings on top. It settles and rots down, which is fine; you are rebuilding it slowly forever.
Should I cut back my garden in autumn?
Not if you want birds. Standing seed heads on coneflowers, sunflowers, asters, goldenrods and native grasses feed finches, sparrows and juncos through winter, and hollow stems shelter overwintering insects that become spring bird food. Cut back in spring instead, once temperatures are reliably warm. If tidiness matters, cut the front border and leave the back, or cut half the beds each year.
Will planting for birds mean I stop getting birds at the feeder?
Feeder visits often drop in a yard that gets good habitat, especially in late summer and autumn when natural seed and fruit are abundant. That is the system working, not failing. You will usually gain species overall, because plants bring in birds that never eat seed at all: warblers, vireos, thrushes and flycatchers. Expect a busier yard and a slower feeder.
