House Sparrows: how to take your feeding station back

The one problem bird that a cage will not stop, and the four things that actually shift it.

The short answer

  • Caged and weight-activated feeders do not work on House Sparrows. At about 28 g a sparrow passes through 1.5 in mesh and never trips a weight mechanism, which is why the usual squirrel gear changes nothing.
  • The lever that does work is food. House Sparrows rate millet, cracked corn and sunflower hearts at the top and safflower and nyjer at the bottom, so a station built on safflower, nyjer and in-shell striped sunflower is close to sparrow-proof.
  • Identify before you act. Female House Sparrows are confused with female House Finches and native sparrows constantly, and the native birds are federally protected.
  • Nest boxes matter more than feeders. A 1 1/8 in entrance hole excludes House Sparrows and admits chickadees and wrens, but a bluebird box needs 1 1/2 in and cannot be sparrow-proofed by hole size alone.
  • House Sparrows are not protected under the US Migratory Bird Treaty Act, but state and local rules vary. Ask your state wildlife agency what is permitted where you live rather than trusting a forum.

House Sparrows are the one feeder problem that the standard equipment does not solve. Buy a caged feeder for squirrels and it works. Buy a weight-activated feeder for grackles and it works. Buy either for House Sparrows and you have spent money on nothing, because a 28 g bird walks through a 1.5 in mesh and is far too light to close a mechanism built for a squirrel.

Everything below is built around that fact. The tools that shift House Sparrows are seed choice, port geometry and nest box discipline, in that order.

First, be certain what you are looking at#

This matters more here than anywhere else on the site, because the actions people take against House Sparrows are actions that would be illegal against a native bird, and the lookalikes are common yard birds.

Male House Sparrows are easy: gray crown, black bib, chestnut nape, clean white cheek. The females are where mistakes happen. If you cannot see the breast clearly, wait for a better view. There is no urgency that justifies guessing.

Why a station tips over to sparrows#

House Sparrows are colonial, sedentary, tied to human structures, and they feed in flocks. Our data gives them the maximum score on both ground feeding and flocking, and lists five feeder types they will use: hopper, platform, ground, tube and window. That is nearly every feeder in a normal yard.

The takeover mechanism is behavioral rather than physical. Sparrows arrive in a group, occupy every perch at once, and stay. Chickadees and titmice take one seed and leave, so they lose every contested perch by default. Once twenty sparrows are resident, the yard looks like it has plenty of birds and actually has one species.

Three things usually caused it:

  • A seed mix heavy in white proso millet or cracked corn, which are two of their top three foods.
  • An open platform or tray feeder, which suits them perfectly.
  • A cavity within about 50 ft: a gap in a soffit, a dryer vent, a porch light fitting, a barn.

Close the cavity and you are dealing with visitors instead of residents, which is a much easier problem.

Note what sits at the bottom. Safflower and nyjer are both rated "rarely", and striped sunflower only "takes occasionally". Now compare that with the birds you actually want: cardinals rate safflower and striped sunflower both as top-tier favorites, goldfinches rate nyjer top-tier, and chickadees, titmice and house finches all eat safflower readily.

That gives you a three-seed station that House Sparrows find close to worthless:

  1. Safflower in the main hopper or tube. Keeps cardinals, chickadees, titmice, house finches and doves. Also drops grackles and most squirrels, which is why it is the default recommendation for grackle season as well.
  2. Nyjer in a dedicated finch feeder. Goldfinches, siskins and house finches only.
  3. Striped sunflower on a tray if you want cardinals, jays and grosbeaks. The thick hull is the point: it is a handling tax that a small conical bill pays badly.

And here is what has to go, at least for a season: white proso millet, cracked corn, and sunflower hearts. All three score top-tier for House Sparrows. Hearts are the painful one, because they are the no-mess seed and the reason many people use them, but switching from hearts to in-shell seed adds a shelling step that a sparrow flock finds significantly less rewarding than a chickadee does.

Feeder designs that a House Sparrow cannot work#

Since mesh and weight both fail, the geometry that works is the geometry a sparrow will not adopt: hanging head-down, and feeding under a moving overhead object.

Upside-down and bottom-access feeders#

House Sparrows are ground and perch feeders. They rarely feed hanging inverted, while chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches and woodpeckers all do it comfortably. Two designs exploit this:

  • A bottom-access suet feeder, where the cake can only be reached from underneath. This is the standard answer to starlings and it works on sparrows too. Downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and Carolina wrens all use it without hesitation.
  • An inverted seed feeder, where the ports sit below the perches so a bird has to hang down to reach the seed. Goldfinches take to these within days. Sparrows mostly do not, though a persistent individual will eventually learn, so treat it as a strong filter rather than a wall.

The halo#

A halo is a ring or a pair of crossed wires mounted about 12 to 18 in above the feeder, with four to eight lengths of fine monofilament hanging down around it, ending a few inches short of the tray. It costs almost nothing to build from a wire coat hanger and fishing line.

House Sparrows appear unusually reluctant to feed beneath thin overhead lines that move, while finches, chickadees and cardinals largely ignore them. Reports on how well it works vary a lot from yard to yard, so treat it as a cheap experiment rather than a guarantee: build it, give it a fortnight, and keep it if your sparrow counts drop. Two practical notes if you try it. Use monofilament rather than anything with loops, so nothing can snag a bird. And check it weekly, because tangled or degraded line near a feeder is a hazard.

Nest boxes: the part that actually matters#

Feeder competition is an annoyance. Nest box competition kills birds. House Sparrows will destroy eggs, kill nestlings and sometimes kill an incubating adult to take a cavity, and if you put up boxes you have taken on responsibility for what happens in them.

Hole size is the first filter and it only goes so far:

So a chickadee box can be made sparrow-proof by dimension alone. A bluebird box cannot, and that is where the management comes in:

  1. Site it in the open. Bluebird boxes belong in open ground, and House Sparrow density falls off with distance from buildings. Put boxes as far from houses, barns, feeders and farmyards as your property allows, and prefer a fence line over an eave every time.
  2. Monitor weekly. Open the box once a week through the season. You are looking for the domed, messy grass-and-trash nest that House Sparrows build, which looks nothing like the neat woven cup of a bluebird.
  3. Never let them finish. A box left in sparrow possession becomes a colony anchor for years.
  4. Use a sparrow spooker at the right moment. This is a light frame over the box roof with two or three mylar streamers hanging down beside the entrance. Bluebirds that have already laid an egg are committed and tolerate it. Bluebirds that have not yet laid will abandon. So the timing rule is strict: install it only after the first egg appears, and take it down after fledging so it does not lose its novelty for the next brood.
  5. Do not put up boxes you will not check. An unmonitored 1 1/2 in box near a building is, in practice, a House Sparrow nest box.

Where the law comes in#

House Sparrows were introduced to North America in the nineteenth century and are not native here. Because of that, they are not among the species protected by the US Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which covers essentially every native bird at your feeder including grackles, blackbirds, juncos and every native sparrow.

That is a real distinction, and it is also where most online advice goes wrong, because federal non-protection is not the same as "anything goes". State wildlife codes, municipal ordinances, animal cruelty law and rules on trap types and discharge of any device all apply and all vary by jurisdiction. Canada handles introduced species differently again.

What we can say plainly: misidentification is not a defense, so if you are not completely certain of the bird, do nothing. And nothing on this page requires you to touch a bird at all. Seed choice, feeder geometry, cavity closure and box monitoring are the whole toolkit for the vast majority of yards.

A four-week reset#

Week 1. Walk the building and close every accessible cavity: soffit gaps, loose vent covers, open eaves, unused dryer vents. Take down all millet, corn and mixed seed. Fill the main feeder with safflower.

Week 2. Expect the yard to look quiet. Cardinals and chickadees are still learning that safflower is food, and the sparrow flock is still checking in. Do not put the old seed back. Clear spilled seed off the ground every evening, which also heads off seed waste and mess and the rodents it attracts.

Week 3. Regulars settled on safflower. Add the nyjer feeder if you want goldfinches, and add a bottom-access suet feeder for woodpeckers and nuthatches. Count sparrows at the same time each day so you have a number to compare against.

Week 4. If counts are still high, add a halo over the main feeder and give it another two weeks. If they are down, stop here and leave the station alone.

Through all of it, keep planting. A yard with dense native shrubs and layered cover supports the native birds you want far better than any single feeder change, and House Sparrows are birds of pavement, lawn and buildings rather than structure. The long-term answer to a sparrow yard is a less sparrow-shaped yard.

Frequently asked questions#

Will a squirrel-proof or caged feeder stop House Sparrows?

No, and this is the most common wasted purchase in bird feeding. A caged feeder works by mesh size, typically 1.5 in, which stops a squirrel, a grackle and a starling. A House Sparrow weighs about 28 g and is roughly the size of a house finch, so it goes straight through the mesh and feeds inside the cage in peace. A weight-activated feeder closes at a threshold set for animals many times heavier and a sparrow never trips it. Food choice and port design are the only mechanical levers that work here.

What seed will House Sparrows not eat?

Safflower and nyjer. In our preference data House Sparrows rate both at the bottom of the scale, while cardinals rate safflower as a top-tier favorite and goldfinches rate nyjer the same. Striped sunflower is a partial third option: sparrows take it only occasionally because the hull is thick and hard for a small conical bill, while cardinals, jays and grosbeaks handle it easily. What you must remove is white proso millet, cracked corn and sunflower hearts, all of which House Sparrows rate at the very top.

How do I tell a House Sparrow from a native sparrow?

Look at the breast and the face. A female House Sparrow is plain: dull buff-gray underparts with no streaking and a pale stripe behind the eye. A female House Finch has clearly streaked underparts. A Song Sparrow is heavily streaked with a dark central spot. A White-throated Sparrow has a crisp white throat patch and yellow between eye and bill. Male House Sparrows are unmistakable: gray crown, black bib, chestnut behind the eye and a clean white cheek.

Do House Sparrows kill bluebirds?

They compete aggressively for cavities and will destroy eggs and kill nestlings and sometimes incubating adults to take a box. That is why nest box management matters more than the feeder. Site bluebird boxes in open ground well away from buildings and farm structures, monitor them weekly through the season, and use a sparrow spooker over the box once the bluebird has laid its first egg. Never leave a House Sparrow in possession of a box you put up.

Why did House Sparrows suddenly take over my feeder?

Usually a food change, a structural change or a nesting site. Check whether you switched to a mix heavy in millet or cracked corn, whether a new open tray or hopper went up, and whether a gap opened in a soffit, vent or porch light fitting nearby. Sparrows are colonial and tied to buildings, so a single accessible cavity can multiply the local group several times over in one season. Close the cavity, drop the millet, and the flock usually thins out over a month.
