Live vs dried mealworms

Dried worms are twenty to forty times cheaper per worm. Live worms move, and movement is what a bluebird is actually looking for.

The short answer

  • Dried wins for everyday feeding. Our working figures put dried worms near 0.12 cents each against 2 to 5 cents for live, which is a factor of twenty to forty.
  • Live wins on first contact. Bluebirds, wrens and robins locate prey by movement, and a dried worm lying still in a dish can be ignored for weeks by a bird that has never used one.
  • The standard route is live for two to three weeks to teach the dish, then a gradual switch to dried, adding about 25% dried per week.
  • Soak dried worms in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes and drain before serving in heat and through nesting. Live worms are about 60% water; dry ones carry almost none.
  • Portion beats format. About 15 worms per adult bird per day, offered at fixed times, keeps the cost sane and stops starlings learning the dish.

Feed dried for everyday use and keep live worms for the two jobs they are worth paying for: teaching a new dish, and nesting season. Dried worms cost roughly a fortieth as much per worm, store for months in a cupboard and need no husbandry, and birds that already recognize a mealworm dish take them readily. Live worms buy you one thing that dried worms cannot: movement, which is how a bluebird, a wren or a robin actually locates prey. If nothing is using your dish yet, that one thing is worth the entire price difference.

What live worms buy you#

Detection. This is the whole argument and it is a strong one. An Eastern Bluebird hunts from a perch, scanning for movement below, and a dish of still brown objects reads as gravel. Live worms writhe against the sides of a dish and get noticed within days. That difference is the reason almost every successful mealworm station starts live.

The transition, once birds are coming reliably:

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: live worms only, at the same two times each day. First light is the useful one, before the starling flock has finished its morning circuit.
  2. Week 4: three quarters live, one quarter dried, mixed together so the moving worms carry the still ones.
  3. Weeks 5 to 7: shift another quarter each week.
  4. Week 8 onward: dried, soaked in warm weather. Keep a small live supply for spring, when pairs prospecting for a nest site are effectively naive again.

Water. A live worm is about 60% water, and in a heat wave or a drought that is a real contribution. It is also why live worms remain the safer default around very young nestlings.

Note who else is on that list at the top. European Starlings and Common Grackles rate mealworms as highly as bluebirds do, which is the constraint that shapes everything about how you serve them.

What dried worms buy you#

Cost, and it is not a close contest. Our site figure for dried mealworms is about $9.50 a pound, the most expensive food we track. It is still cheap per worm, because a dried worm weighs almost nothing: our working figure is 7,000 to 9,000 dried worms in a pound, or roughly 0.12 cents each. Live worms bought by count run about 2 to 5 cents each depending on how many you buy. That is a factor of twenty to forty.

No husbandry. Live worms are livestock. They need a fridge at 40 to 50 °F, an inch of wheat bran or oats as bedding, a slice of carrot or potato once a week for moisture, and the old slice removed before it molds. They pupate if they warm up, they die if they get too cold, and they arrive on a delivery schedule that is not yours. Dried worms sit in a sealed tub in a cupboard.

Portion control. You can measure a level tablespoon of dried worms without thinking about it. One to two level tablespoons per serving, twice a day, is the working portion for a resident pair, and it is far easier to be disciplined about than counting live worms into a cup.

Now add the number that actually breaks budgets. A pair feeding nestlings will clear 100 worms in a morning if you let them, and people do let them. At live prices in small counts that is $5 before lunch. This is why the portion rule matters more than the format: measure it into the dish and walk away. If the dish empties in 15 minutes, you may offer that much again. If worms are still there after an hour, you have overfed, and the leftovers will pull in ants, wasps and starlings.

The season that changes the answer#

Through spring and early summer, dried worms need soaking and portions need capping.

Soak them. Warm water, 10 to 15 minutes, drained thoroughly. They roughly double in weight and turn pliable. Nestlings take nearly all their water from what the adults bring them, and a bone-dry worm delivers protein with none. Do this from the first nest through fledging, and any time the daytime high is high enough that you would not want to be out in it. Water in the yard matters for the same reason: see bird baths and water.

Cap the portion. Mealworms are low in calcium relative to phosphorus, so they belong in a growing bird's diet as a supplement and not as the bulk of it. Fifteen worms per adult per day is a ceiling rather than a target, and the point of a dish that goes empty is that the adults spend the rest of the day hunting real insects. Soak more often than you think in the Deep South and the Southwest. Anywhere daytime highs run above 90 °F for weeks, treat unsoaked dried worms as an autumn and winter food. The rest of the warm-weather adjustments are in summer feeding.

When mealworms are the wrong tool#

Starlings and grackles are clearing the dish. Neither format helps, because both birds rate mealworms as a top-tier food. The fix is geometry: a dish inside a cage with 1.5 in mesh set at least 5 in clear of the food on every side. A starling at about 82 g and a grackle at about 115 g cannot pass or reach through it. Bluebirds at 30 g, Carolina Wrens at 20 g and chickadees at 11 g go straight in. The right hardware is covered in mealworm feeders, and the wider campaign in stopping starlings.

You want more insect-eating birds generally. A dish feeds the pair you already have. A yard with native shrubs, leaf litter left in the beds and no insecticide produces caterpillars and beetles at a scale no tub of worms matches, which is the argument in native plants and cover.

You are trying to attract robins or orioles. Both take mealworms, but fruit and jelly usually gets their attention faster and costs far less. An American Robin rates fruit and mealworms equally.

Rodents are already a problem. Dried worms are a concentrated, shelf-stable protein source lying in the open. Feed live only, in measured portions, and take the dish in at dusk. See rats and mice.

Frequently asked questions#

Will birds eat dried mealworms?

Yes, once they know the dish is food. The obstacle is not taste, it is detection. A bluebird hunts from a perch by watching for movement on the ground, and a dried worm does not move. Birds that already use a mealworm dish switch to dried without complaint. Birds that have never used one may walk past dried worms for weeks. That is why the standard approach is to start with live worms for two or three weeks, then blend dried in at roughly a quarter of the portion, increasing each week.

How do you rehydrate dried mealworms?

Cover them with warm, not boiling, water in a mug and leave them 10 to 15 minutes, then drain thoroughly and tip them into the dish. They roughly double in weight and go from brittle to pliable. Only soak what you will put out at once: rehydrated worms sour within a day in warm weather and mush at the bottom of a dish is a mold problem waiting to happen. Do this routinely from the first nest of the season through fledging, and in any heat wave.

How do you store live mealworms?

In the fridge at 40 to 50 °F, in a smooth-sided ventilated container with an inch of wheat bran or rolled oats as bedding. Cold keeps them dormant so they do not pupate. Add a slice of carrot or potato once a week for moisture and take the old one out before it molds. They keep four to six weeks like that. Take the portion out 20 minutes before serving and let it warm up, because cold worms barely move and movement is the whole reason you bought them.

Are dried mealworms as nutritious as live ones?

Close. Drying removes water rather than protein or fat, so dried worms run about 50% protein and 28% fat by weight, against a live worm that is roughly 60% water. Per worm the nutrients are similar. What is genuinely different is the water, which matters most for nestlings, since young birds get nearly all their fluid from what they are fed. Soaking closes that gap. Neither form is a complete diet, and mealworms are low in calcium relative to phosphorus, so treat them as a supplement rather than a staple during nesting.

Which costs less over a season?

Do dried mealworms attract rats?

More than live ones do. A live worm cannot climb a smooth-sided dish and does not survive long outside it, so spillage is self-limiting. Dried worms scatter, keep indefinitely and are a concentrated protein source, which is exactly what a rodent is looking for. Never leave dried worms out overnight, sweep under the dish before dusk, and if you already have a rodent problem, feed live worms only, in measured portions, and bring the dish in at the end of the day.
